Many compare this game with DDLC, and I think doing so is a massive disservice to both games. Yes there are similarities in how the story breaks the 4th wall, but the way they accomplish it can't be more different. DDLC pushes the limit of what can be achieved outside of its confines as a VN, while this game pushes for what is possible within it. Both are brilliant in their own way and you will have a great time if you go into this enjoying it for what it is rather than comparing it to what it isn't. Yes, the uncensored patch is absolutely vital to the plot. And no, for once this is not me on copium.

do not look anything up about this game. not even while playing. not even after YOU are done. if YOU do, YOU missed the point. the game will not hold YOUR hand, it is up to YOU to figure things out and embark on a journey of regrettable choices. never before has a vn been so anti-vn. not even doki doki literature club. YOU are messed up. play. it. blind.

If you're actually going to buy this, buy it through Jast. The 18+ patch is pay walled anyways and is pretty much required to make sense of a decent amount of it. Go in blind and avoid using a walkthrough as much as you can. It's a truly unique experience that couldn't be done in any other medium.

I recommend not reading many reviews of this game, and largely going in blind. However for this review, I will talk about things that I believe won't ruin the experience whilst still giving you an idea as to what this game is like. For a game that came out 4 years before DDLC, not only does this game manage to do everything that game did better, but it goes even beyond that and it actually amazes me this game isn't talked about more. Of course, I can't give specifics on what exactly that means since it would ruin the experience, and besides, this game is very unique in it's own right and completely comparing it to DDLC isn't fair. But know that this game is a very emotional and unconventional experience that was kind of ahead of its time for 2013. That being said there are still a few things I feel I can talk about. The art is done pretty well and gives a pretty unique feel to the game. The dialogue is very well written, and some of the unique ways the game goes about telling it's story is pretty interesting. There's not much more I can say without ruining the experience but I promise you that at the very least, you will find the game interesting. Overall, a very emotional, unique, and somewhat ahead of its time game, 9.5/10

I decided that 2024 would be my year of visual novels. It's my favorite game genre, something I am always revisiting and finding endless joy in analyzing the many hours worth of reading laid out in front of me. I am especially fond of denpa, and heard this game (with art by one of my favorite artists, tsujisanta) fell into that category. Nothing, not even going in with some slight spoilers, prepared me for this experience. It was a love letter to the genre and its players, something so new and fresh despite having experienced countless VNs that attempt to do the same thing Totono accomplishes. I really don't want to say too much and ruin the experience, but this was a gripping read, and one I wish I could revisit blindly once more. It really set the stage for every other game I'm playing due to a certain choice I made. It has been a while since I have been so touched by a game, but Totono felt like it was made for people like me. If you love VNs, you owe it to yourself to play through this classic. I recommend going through JAST USA to get the full, uncensored game or the patch if you want the H-scenes. However, I do think the translation without the H-scenes is excellent and more inclusive, so do with that what you will. I haven't stopped thinking about this game since I finished it, and I hope whoever reads this gets to experience the same thing. Just want to say I experienced about three bad ends before I got on with the story, and had to do the first good end twice. The autoskip in this game is phenomenal! Auto-highlights text you've already read, and skips until there's a new line-- a function that will definitely come in handy with later gameplay. I am a very fast reader and was able to utilize the autoskip in a way that didn't affect how I was able to enjoy and interact with the game. Can't say enough positive things about it.
