Playing through Yaga was an enjoyable experience overall, but for me it was primarily so because of how the game brings to life some fascinating and, at times, very niche characters and creatures from Slavic mythology. Being able to play through the game and show my Russian wife every new creature and ask her if she's heard of it was an integral part of my enjoyment as she either immediately knew what it was and happily told me everything she knew about it or had to look it up online only to realize that the odd word she only knows from some expressions has ties to some creature in Slavic mythology. Apart from that, I loved the soundtrack. The gameplay was okay, but not my favorite.

A rather short, but fun game. As others have mentioned, combat is not the strong suit as it can sometimes be difficult to know whether you are going to get hit or not, a general rule of thumb is to keep your distance from foes as this will allow you to easily see their attacks and dodge them with ease. The storytelling and interactions is where this game shines. I like that you can pick how Ivan responds and this shapes his character, some picks are simply hilarious. Hearing an uninterested "Huh?" in a most serious situation just cracked me up. While the story is short, you can replay it multiple times making different choices and still have fun, this is a big plus. Besides the story, you get a handful of side quests which both help shape your character and earn you rewards from the person giving you the quest and from exploring that area of the map. I like this a lot, as it contributes to the world building, but does not force you to do anything. If you want, you can skip these quests, however each of them has a unique set of interactions. Not to mention that along the way, you may encounter a few elderly women giving you riddles to solve hehe Crafting, right, well, it took me a bit to figure out how to get ores so I can upgrade the anvil. While the combat is rather simple, the various enchantments you can put on your hammers makes it more interesting as you can go for different builds. What I did find annoying is that you get a rune that makes your hammer harder to break. I was very happy with this until I found out that using it no longer alerts me when it's about to break. This has led me to losing a few hammers I was quite fond of. After a while you can roam the different areas just for scavenging, if you are in need of more talismans (that you can sell) or ores, this is a way to get more. What I did was to commit to an abundant ore (copper) and salvage all other hammers that I found, I either used up until the nearly broke or just salvaged them at the 1st anvil I found. This allowed me to fully upgrade the anvil rather fast which made my weapons even more powerful. I kept repairing them over and over to keep the enchantments.

So this isn't a bad game but it's not a great game either. If there was a neutral option I would pick that but as it stands the game doesn't do anything terribly wrong so I lean towards giving it a thumbs up. The story is pretty charming and feels like your classic fairy tale, with characters like Ivan, the Tzar, and Baba Yaga having clear personalities with each other. The DLC also adds on a ton of other characters and feels great. The combat and crafting system feels pretty good. I mean this obviously isn't Dark Souls so the combat is not going to get that deep (as stated in the negative reviews) but for an Indy game it does the job. The best mechanic in the game is the personality system; it impacts leveling as well as gives players a lot of choice in the story they're creating. The game offers you a lot of choices with choices being split into short-term impact (which means you get to see the consequences right away) to long term impact (which means choices that will affect the end of the game). Sadly the game fumbles the "end-game". While the combat / crafting system is good enough for an Indy game, you will get bored of it eventually. This will happen even quicker if you're playing the DLC. As it stands now I think the game is simply too long; I would shrink down the Maria quest line (which adds 5 quests to the main story) and compress them into 2 quests tops. Likewise I would get rid of most "level" quests, these are just random quests to go into a dungeon and level up, they have no story attached to them, and at the end game I just straight up skipped them since my character was pretty OP by this point. I don't want to hold balancing issues against the game since I'm sure they didn't consider the DLC when initially designing the base game but even taking that into account I had like 10 level up quests by the end of the game I was ignoring and that just looks bad. A player naturally wants to complete most of the game and should never have that many open quests that they don't want to complete, even if they are just optional quests to gain resources and levels. The game also struggles a lot with teaching the character the basic mechanics. For starters, the game never directs you to the church or witch tent, nor does it tell you what blessings are. Blessings are essentially temporary perks that you get to keep unless you max out your bad luck score. If you're having trouble during the early game I would recommend getting those over upgrading your anvil, especially the bread one as that gives you healing items whenever you get low on them. Regarding the game's personality system. So the game tries to have it both ways, they want the over the top "good / evil" choices but they also want morally grey; aka picking Righteous choices isn't always the good path and likewise picking aggression isn't always evil. What that means is it can be incredibly frustrating to understand how your choices will affect the ending. This is the first time in a while where I was playing a good character, spared everyone, and picked good options whenever I could and still got a bad ending for my character. I could understand not getting the best ending, but a bad one feels weird. Anyway that's my view on the game, not a bad game but one I wouldn't play twice.

It's OK. Nice character design, but some game mechanics make game-play a bit annoying. Like teleportation system that requires you to speak with the oven, and they it's goes to animation. You can easily get overpowered if you sell all the junk upgrades that drop, and dupe (there is an NPC) good updates, upgrade the anvil and put lightning and chain in one hammer. The most annoying think is how long the levels load (Played on the ROG Ally)
