6/10 - enough to cross into positive, but not enough to be a great game I'm a xcom 2 veteran, having slightly less than 300h into it. I love the game, and beaten ironman commander difficulty with WoTC. So you can say I know how to play. Chimera squad uses same engine from xcom 2, same AI, and same skills, so transitioning was very easy. I played my first game on "expert" and know which abilities to get and how to use them. Needless to say, I understand this is a prototype game. It was devs experimenting on turn order type game, and game where agents are premade and can't be killed. This naturally allows much more tailoring into those agents for custom VA's, lore, and distinct abilities. However, its also a drawback, because it means, well, THOSE AGENTS CAN'T BE KILLED. If they die, you fail the mission and need to restart. To top it off, agents have very powerful abilities (think bladestorm on templar or infinite heals on medic) very early, making them very powerful. For me, this makes the game very "risk free" or casual, since you can't really fail. In xcom 2 you had to be very careful because every mistake could be your last. Losing a high tier soldier hurt, so failing a mission but preserving the rest of the squad was a dilemma. In chimera squad you can make a bunch of errors and still be okay due to having lots of blocks, heals, stabilizes or abilities, and if somehow you still lose an agent, your penalty is to restart the level. The breach mechanic is fine, its a new take on overwatch and experimentation is always welcome. But it confuses me how do we breach through the interior front door of a building and enemies are surprised? Did they not hear the immense gunfight and explosions in the room next to it? I'm baffled by that. On a more positive note, I love having aliens on my team. This is definitely something I wanna see more in xcom 3 if it ever comes.

A cheap and cheerful version of XCOM. Everthing is smaller and simpler. Fights are per-room, rather than on a large map. Chimera Squad is not as good as the earlier games, but it is still enjoyable and worth playing.

Really good if you want a more an easier and less tedious XCOM game. I've played the previous iterations, even on Iron-man mode and they get very tiring after a while. This one is perfect for some chill gaming. I also prefer that you have actual characters and not the random nobodies. I never could get attached to my soldiers in XCOM 1 and 2. They live, serve and die. Whatever. It's a shame that in this game they can't die at all but I wish they would do more "fleshed out" characters in their future games. The characters are somewhat cringe but people who say that "seasoned soldiers" do not act this way haven't talked to an actual soldier ever. People, even soldiers, will joke around and be chill depending on their individual personalities.

As a fan of XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2, I enjoyed it. It's a much lighter romp with a shorter playtime. I finished normal mode in about 25 hours, and I took my time. I especially enjoyed being able to play as the alien characters and using their special abilities.

I can only recommend this game if you are a big fan of XCOM or Tactic games but there are a lot of bad stuff in this and if I wasnt so in love with the XCOM setting and aesthethics, I would give this rushed game a thumbs down. The game is baby's first tactical game, even on impossible mode, the battles and strategic management decisions do not have the risks and weight as prior XCOM titles had even on normal mode, there is no challenge in this game that forces you to create specific teams for specific tricky missions. You can just blast away with your overpowered soldiers in any difficulty or mission. Now, the other BIG issue with this game is it's technical components, the game freezes a lot and sometimes when you reload a battle save, the enemies stop spawning forcing one to restart an encounter, one time, the device I had to destroy turned invincible and I couldnt target it or damage it even with grenades, again, forcing me to restart, super annoying. The cutscenes are comic-style and as such, they hardly have ANY animation, its kinda sad. The game plays more like a SWAT team simulator than an organization that needs to get their shit together to prevent the end of the world, I mean.. I suppose because this is a SPIN-OFF rather than a true XCOM game, this is the way it is, it's fine I guess. Let's talk positives now, the voice acting is great, the music is good and the banter between squadmates was very entertaining, I wish the game had more of these, the character's designs were cool and I really wanted to know more about these people, they really did well on these fronts. Missions got repetitive after my 2nd playthrough but they are quick enough that they dont overstay their welcome, at most a whole mission is around 20 minutes if you take your time and the animations, sound effects and graphics make it entertaining enough so they dont become a chore after playing for hours, its good. As for achievements, most come naturally and they are not hard to get if you know what you need to do, except 2 of them: One is to breach using ladders which requires RNG for a very rare mission to appear that has them and the other is to play the whole game in 3 different ways, very 3 specific ways which you need to go to the Internet and find out about. I did like playing Chimera Squad but they could have done better, I got it on sale and I did feel I got my money's worth. This game gets 23 accidentally shot cars that explode killing innocent civilians out of 45 times I missed an enemy with a SHOTGUN shot to the face from right besides them with 92% aim, classic XCOM.
