X-COM, 30 years after its release, is still one of the greatest games in history. How amazing and surprising it is: a completely destructible environment, tons of weapons, research, tanks and aircraft, management of bases and employees, tactical turn-based battles, a dozen opponents, a variety of missions and all this in 1994 on three floppy disks. I played with OpenXCOM mod, with some quality of life improvements (such as custom construction of the first base and automatic detection of psi power for new employees), and had a great fun. Recommended to everyone.

Tried it once or twice before, but never really gave it a proper shake. Well, now it clicked, and I can't stop playing. This is a legit 10/10. The game has fantastic pacing, and the high lethality of the sort of hide-and-seek tactical combat, combined with the excellent atmosphere, makes for a tense and deeply satisfying experience as you go from scrappy alien defense force to efficient alien death squad. So am I done with the game? Fuck no. I'm going straight back in to try out the mods. Like many have pointed out, [url=https://openxcom.org]OpenXcom is the best way to play this. It's super easy to install, and there are ways to still have Steam track your hours, if you care for that sort of thing.

This game is often on top ten lists as one of the best games of all time. If you haven't played it, you should. If you have played it, you know. Of course it won't be for everyone, and a newcomer may find it difficult or janky. And it is janky! But, as I play newer XCom remakes(which aren't bad at all, I have to stress), I always find myself coming back to the original. The jank is part of the charm, I guess. That said, you can update it quite a bit with OpenXCom and various mods. Breathes new life into the old game.

I love this game. Honestly this game shaped my childhood. Growing up, I could not wait to run home from school and fire up my Tandy PC and play this game. So many hours of my youth were spent with me and my friends playing this. So much fun and so many cherished memories revolve around it. Oh, and if you thought for one sec I beat it when I was younger, HA!!!!!! this game took YEARS to beat, Thats XCOM baby!!!

IMPORTANT NOTE: IF YOU NOTICE THAT EVERYONE HAS LESS THAN TWO HOURS OF PLAYTIME AND ARE SINGING THE GAME'S PRAISES, THAT'S BECAUSE THEY'RE USING A TOOL CALLED "OpenXCOM"!!! If you want to try this game, make sure to download that tool, because it makes the experience much, much smoother. All that said, this is one of my most favorite games, and definitely my favorite Tactics game. I mean, it sorta popularized the genre, didn't it? I'm not blinded by nostalgia or even a fake nostalgia for retro games, I started playing this in 2019. It is legitimately just a good game, with internal systems that activate my almonds in just the right way. It's got an extra level of detail most tactics games are missing today, and yet manages to avoid becoming too burdened by extra detail. There are many imitators, but the OG still stands above them.
