Holds up fairly well despite its age, but I would not recommend it except to fans of Egosoft's X series. Newcomers should probably look at X2 or one of the X3 titles to start with. Those games are of much higher quality, and are a bit less frustratingly cryptic. If you do buy this and get stuck, a walkthrough is included in the game files. For fans of X though, this game is pretty nice. You get to see how it all started. It has a bit more of an atmosphere than the more recent games (X4, Rebirth). It is also much simpler than later games, which is both a blessing and a curse. Less complexity, but also less to do. You will probably finish the main plot, and then move on to one of the more recent titles. As for compatibility, despite Egosoft's best efforts this was still made for Windows 9x, and there is only so much they can do. They still patch the game to try and keep it working. But realistically you will need to spend some time debugging in order to get this working on anything newer than Windows 7. Also, you may have issues getting gamepads and joysticks to work. I had no issues with the keyboard or mouse controls. Ironically, you may actually have an easier time getting this to work on Linux. The game runs out of the box on Proton Experimental as of September 2024, but is prone to crashes, so save often. Also NPC portraits are broken and only display a test pattern. I highly recommend installing GE-Proton. With GE-Proton9-11, the game runs much better and portraits mostly work, although sometimes the wrong portrait will be displayed. Lutris' Wine-GE also works fine and is more stable. Even Lutris' Wine-GE still crashes periodically, so remember to save. Overall, a very strong showing for a 25 year old game. One of my all-time favorites, even if it is a somewhat niche title.

Imagine this: You're dropped into an alien star system. You don't have anything: no local means of exchange, no technology, no knowledge of even where you are. The only reason you can communicate with aliens at all is because they translated your language out of pure whim. You are loaned a pocket change simply because a local fleet commander comes from a species believing in allowing others to take a chance at "profits." You have two goals: return the pocket change (at the risk of being disposed of as an unholy contract breaker) and a name of a system "somewhere out there" where "there might be somebody who knows anything about your situation." That's it. The universe is your oyster. Dozens of systems. Dozens of supply chains. Dozens of enemies. What you do is up to you. The perfectly polished gameplay is there for you to engage in it. When you arrived, dear Brennan, you had nothing, not even shields to protect you from space dust. When you finished, oh dear Brennan, you had the world. It was not given to you. It was earned by your own tenacity, acumen, flying skills, and patience. You weren't born a hero. But you became one. The X series is a masterpiece of space economics simulators. X: Beyond the Frontier is the first instalment in a rich series. A perfectly polished well-designed game that excels at economics and provides a decent fighter experience and a simple, yet meaningful storyline representing a vast, detailed setting. I love this game. I hope you will too.

it's hard to describe how deeply satisfying X: Beyond the Frontier is to play. the freedom of when and if to pursue the story does a lot for making it into a good comfort game to visit whenever i have the time and the slow pace means most of the time i won't get into stressful situations unless i seek them out. there's a lot of freedom in how to approach the game but naturally making a profit is as satisfying as it's ever been as a space trader just make sure to play in 4:3 so the UI doesn't get cut off

This game can be broken down into 4 distinct phases: 1. Fish out of water, but Capitalism (Trading Empire Simulator) 2. Docking Computer Any% (Your real-life sanity depends on getting this done) 3. Preparing for Story Missions (You must prepare... with profit) 4. Doing the Story Missions As the player, you will spend most of your time in Phase 1 until you are ready to do Phase 3. The bulk of game play is the cargo moving, factory building and supplying, SETA flying trading empire simulator. Even following the guides available, this can get very time consuming. This game does have space combat, but it is tuned to be less rewarding than the trading simulator. For its time, the combat is good. Move on to X2 and after for more rewarding space combat scenarios. That being said, if you want to understand the origins of the X Universe, be the hero, build a scrappy trading empire, or have no problem editing your save to give yourself up to 21 million credits, this game is for you.
