This game's theme does most of the work. It has a good art style, decent sound design, and an interesting premise. Those three things cover for the lackluster gameplay, story elements, and plodding controls. If you grew up in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, and enjoyed the campiness of wrestling around those times then you'll probably find enjoyment here. If you're anything other than that then the game might not be worth your time.

Pros: + A wrestling RPG is something I never thought I wanted. It's such a good idea. + Graphics. Game looks awesome. + Combat is accessible. Cons: - The thing I was most disappointed about was the story. As it's a wrestling RPG that at first seems to be an homage to (mainly) 80's wrestling I expected a lot of focus on the story. The story is just not interesting at all. It's bland, it's cookie cutter and worst of all it doesn't really feel like a wrestling world after a few hours. - Combat is way too easy and repetitive. There are some interesting parts but they should have been fleshed out. For instance, you can taunt to gain hype, this gives certain boosts... But the taunt is weak and completely unnecessary. Either: +- I was suprised that this takes place in a toy world. Basically you're playing as an action figure. Personally I'm not a fan of this but it's not really a dealbreaker as I could ignore it most of the time. +- Fantasy: There are "human" (toys) characters and there are animal characters. Again, not a big fan as I'd rather have this set in a more or less realistic universe. This is something you can't ignore though as half the characters are animals. I'm giving this a thumbs up as I wouldn't feel good giving it a negative. But honestly I'm disappointed. Some games rely mostly on their story and some on their combat. But this despite this games initial promise it offers neither. The story is negligible and the combat is way too easy and repetitive.

Fun game! If you're in the middle of that Venn Diagram of 80s pro wrestling fan and fan of SNES-style JRPGs, then this will be money well spent

This is a good game that's a great game if you're into wrestling. It has a lot of references, allusions, and great style. The game could use some polish. That's mostly fine though since you can change options, like turning off the qte's after they've stopped being interesting and become tedious, continuing the game, get an airship to bypass a lot of annoying travel (though I think too late in the story), and the devs have put out a quality of life update. It's possible that everything that rubs me the wrong way about the game will be resolved over time. There's more positives than negatives. The story, characters, art, references, style, ect. Wrestlequest is a good jrpg that's an easy recommend to people the game was clearly made for. I'd say to remember this game if that's not you. Work your way through your backlog and come to this game later if this isn't in your strike zone.
