Great old school FPS, with really good control of the character, satisfiying gunplay and polished visuals. Also a great use of the Quake engine. I can only recommend for all of the classic FPS fans out there, but if you are not familiar with mazelike levels you should maybe avoid it.

Out of all the 'boomer shooter' types, this one is perhaps the most faithful game of the era rather. The trailer on Steam doesn't really do the game justice either. It shows off a fast paced action game with loud guitar riff music, WRATH couldn't be further from that. While it IS a fast paced action game, the overall ambient of the game has this serene, ethereal and otherworldly feel to it. Even during boss fights which you'd think would be tense just has a soft and moody ambient playing in the background. The level design is quite stunning with some great vistas and atmospheric skyboxes. When it comes to gameplay the game has pretty good movement. You feel nice and fluid. Weapons are aesthetically fantastic, have good sound design and feel powerful. The game doesn't shower you with bullets however, so resource management is an important part of the gameplay. Instead of using your favorite weapon all the time the game forces you into situations where using the right weapon for the right situation will leave you less drained of your precious resources. The two cons I have for the game is the over abuse of monster spawning and how quick the AI reacts to you and how far they shoot you from. The monster spawning is an unfortunate necessary due to how the level design works, but I think it weakens the feel of the setting. Enemies don't feel like they are monsters that simply exist somewhere as most of them appear out of nowhere after you've triggered some event, which hurts the immersion. The designers also love abusing their Vortigaunt-inspired enemy who will start shooting at you the nanosecond you enter their FOV and shoot in constant bursts which can lead to a lot of peak-a-boo shootouts that honestly after a while get kind of worn out. This isn't my favorite boomer shooter, although it's very good. But in terms of aesthetic, atmosphere, ambiance and setting it is probably going to be one of the long lasting memories for me.

Very slight thumbs up. The game is fine. Good array of weapons, punchy combat, solid sound design, mostly good looking levels. But personally I only find it enjoyable in short bursts. The problem is pacing and variety. Whenever I boot this up I have a decent time with it but after 30 to 60 minutes my enthusiasm starts to decrease until I turn it off and maybe start it up again a week later. Most combat scenarios play out the exact same way, enemies are kinda randomly placed or spawned in, not much thought was put into what would be interesting compositions. Doesn't hold a candle to the FPS classics of yesteryear. But apart from that, nothing about it is particularily bad or terrible. So yeah, slightly recommended I guess if you want a non-terrible FPS.

WRATH is a solid and challenging boomer shooter that expands on everything that Quake did. It's no longer some basic Quake mod, it's far more than that. Hub one is a touch generic: utilising elements from our original Quake 1 experiences, such as dungeons and castles, but it really comes into its own space in future hubs, becoming a far more complex gameplay experience with more verticality, and complex maze-work and layouts. Weaponry again, moves from basic, to interesting; with most of your weapons roster being built out in hub one, but, future hubs begin to include interesting, or more creative weapons, that make the experience unique. (That crystal gun and mace) Movement is at the core of the game here; and with the use of the Ruination Blade, speed and maneuverability became an essential skill to develop. Saving is weird; mixing weird limited "Tether" saves, which are a resource you can use up, and checkpoint saves in the form of Shrines. But then also unlimited saves if you select this option. Again, weird, and I'd have liked to see dev rather than just give us unlimited quick saves. The Story isn't groundbreaking either, sure it's there, and I can see the dev took time to return to narrative points and develop it out; but, it doesn't feel like anything out of the ordinary (though the final twist was nice), but I just didn't care. I do recommend WRATH though, even with its weird difficulty spikes, if you like a challenge, and you've had 25 years to get good, you'll love this, even if you're not good, you'll enjoy this challenge, just be aware the gap between easy and medium is massive, and easy itself being easy, until randomly not. Have fun! I know I did. Find my full review here, if you prefer a video: https://youtu.be/TMCu1duueHg

I'm reading some pretty harsh reviews from some on this title. Coupled with seeing that the most basic of achievements (In Snow And Moonlight - entering the hub world even before the first main level begins) only having been picked up by 11.7% of players (at the time of writing this) makes me want to share a more positive view on it: This is absolutely a solid shooter. All of the weapons feel and sound powerful and they all fulfil a role without ever being made redundant by later pickups. The movement is fine, even can be fun coupled with the blade of ruination letting you launch yourself about everywhere at hyperspeed. Having said that, I tend to play more carefully and there is definitely space for the slower paced gameplay of moving through the level, checking all your angles alongside the hectic arena fights where fast movement and dodging is key. I'm just glad they included a walk key which some other shooters from the recent resurgence didn't seem to bother with. The levels look great too. Aesthetically they're all impressive, on a much grander scale than anything you'd see from the original Quake levels. They are -quite- large in some cases which can result in a decent chunk of time to complete them and I can see some becoming fatigued with it but personally I am enjoying it all. I'm even loving the soundtrack - it IS more ambient and less prominent than other titles but honestly I find the relentless heavy metal soundtracks of most of these games to be exhausting and prefer a slower more atmospheric bit. Someone mentioned lack of enemy variety, which I disagree with. I won't give a rundown of the whole roster but I especially thought the enemy with the AOE force field was interesting. Due to the different types of mobility that each enemy can have, their attack patterns and range means you can be dealing with a threat from anywhere. The game does deal a lot in teleporting in of enemies though which I can agree can get tedious but it certainly hasn't prevented me from enjoying the experience so far. On a side note, there is an item system with plenty of items to boot but I have only used one so far. I'm the type of player that hordes stuff and saves them for when they're absolutely needed, but hard skill hasn't presented me with that situation yet. Perhaps Outlander skill will see me using them more frequently. Only things that occured to me is the blade of ruination is VERY powerful, you can one shot some pretty strong enemies with the alt fire. I'm fine with it but it did stick out to me that the devs perhaps didn't want people to be able to obliterate 50% of the enemies in an encounter by rushing around with the blade out. :D Also the game needs a weapon wheel function to accomodate for gamepad users, at the moment their only option is to use previous/next weapon or use Steam's inbuilt radial menu function in the gamepad settings. Thanks for reading. Play the game kthxbai.
