Great adventure platformer from way back, one of the best SEGA master system games. Remastered in a brilliant and respectful way with quick and easy toggle of retro sound and graphics. Still to this day a solid 6-10 hr playthru.

What a great idea for the re-release of an old retro game! Instead of trying to remake or (gods forbid) re-imagine it, leave all the programs the same and give it a new coat of paint with improved graphics and sound superimposed over the old game. And what a great defense for the devs: I could complain about some of the jankey controls (which are successfully masked by the complex animations), or the mechanics and say that I would have done it different, but this game was made a long time ago and I have an additional 30 odd years of gaming experience beyond its initial release, so what is really the point (besides indulging in presentism)? Instead, you have a legitimate retro experience with beautiful hand-drawn characters and backgrounds, while employing professional arrangements of the otherwise primitive bit-tunes that are so toe-tapping, they will be with you for days after the game is finished. I could think of half a dozen old games that could benefit from this treatment... most notably Chrono Trigger, but that is another story... Now there may be more to this re-release than what I am thinking is apparent, but it seems like a brilliant approach to resurrecting old games: just get the rights to the program and pour your funds into a new production. My only really complaint is how the new version just reverses the sprites while in the original, the shield-hand is always the left. Also, the lion is missing his mane and the animal sprites for the girl character are the same as the boy so... there does not seem much of a point with the gender selection. But whatever: these are minor details in an otherwise beautiful presentation! Oh and I should probably mention that the game itself is a nifty little fantasy metroidvania. At any rate, with its whimsical animal characters, interesting items, secrets, and the other stuff I said above, I really liked this game. This is what all retro-game cash-grabs should be!

Highly recommended, a gorgeous love letter to the original title and a great opportunity to approach it at the present time. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but as an enjoyer of older games I've appreciated that the controls remained the same. The graphics and soundtrack are switchable at any point between original and new. Regarding the game itself the map is cleverly designed, the different playable characters unlocked as you progress allow you to explore the world from a different perspective and keeps it from being boring or repetitive, and grinding required is close to non-existent. The result is a solid ~8h experience that I'd highly recommend to everyone, especially to those who are willing to give a chance to older games.

It looks absolutely stunning, but make no mistake, it's still a master system game (literally, as far as I'm aware the game's engine is basically an emulator). Meaning it's rather short and sometimes clunky. Not that it doesn't update anything aside from visuals, there's a new save system, it's now widescreen, and there's this one sliding animation they added that does wonders to how the game feels to play. But if you're expecting anything more than a pretty game from the 80's you'd probably be disappointed.

Somewhat primitive and small in scope compared to more modern games in this style, but the attractive new paint job and updated interface show that the core gameplay holds up pretty well. Decently replayable due to its short length.
