I very rarely write reviews for games, but Wildgate feels like a title I have to make an exception for. Full-price multiplayer games are a rare and dying breed in the current gaming landscape of free to play battlepass platforms. There are benefits to this new model for sure, but I admit I'm nostalgic for the days when you'd buy a game outright, with the expectation that you're not going to be nickle-and-dimed at every turn with paid progression models and FOMO activities, designed to keep you logged in as often as possible. I think this is where Wildgate shines; it's both an addictive hit of nostalgia, whilst also being a breath of fresh air and creativity in a gaming landscape so often devoid of new ideas. The biggest plus from the off is the game just works - I loaded it up out of the box, and have experienced no crashes, technical issues or bad optimisation in my time playing so far. The tutorial, while not explaining some of the more nuanced mechanics well (or at all in some cases) gives you enough confidence to load up a match knowing you at least have a basic grasp on what you're trying to achieve. And this leads me to the core experience of Wildgate; a deeply enjoyable, if flawed, PvPvE romp around a sandbox of puzzles, upgrades, and materials. The game just feels good to play, from the immersiveness of upgrading your ship with scavenged parts, to the chaotic rhythm of battling enemy players in space combat. While there is absolutely some frustration mixed in, particularly if you're matched with a less-than communicative team, the game just keeps me coming back for one more match. The possibilities for emergent gameplay the developers have afforded to us mean there's a lot of different ways a match can go, and no two fights feel quite the same. Ship-to-ship combat is simple on the surface, but nuanced in practice - with boarding actions and a myriad of tools and weapons at your disposal, you can switch up the fight at a moments notice, as long as you bring some good strategy and a little teamwork. While this is definitely a game better played with friends, against an unprepared team even a single person can change the course of a match if they play their cards right. After all, chaos is the name of the game, and no plan survives contact with the enemy. Wildgate knows exactly what type of game it's trying to be, and it does that very well. The mechanics are tight, never over-complicated whilst also never being too simple. There are definitely rough edges, and plenty of room for annoyance (particularly with poor teammates and sweaty players dominating a match), but it all works to make a coherent experience if you give it a chance to show you what it brings to the table. I see something genuinely fun and original in Wildgate, and I hope people give it the time it needs to flourish - this is a cutthroat industry, and this title deserves a chance in the sun.

Assuming you get a team that can walk and breathe at the same time, this game is a blast.

This is an amazing game that is basically a new version of "Guns of Icarus." It is very fun if you like crew-based games. Unique characters (though I hate their design) that significantly differ and have various roles in a team. Several ships with their own layouts and specs. Many types of equipment and weapons. But what is most important - AMAZING mods you can loot during the game and upgrade your ship with. They really change each ship a lot. It's so much fun to clear another mob location and check what loot your crew gets. Also, very interesting idea with gathering fuel and ice (ship heal item). PvP combat is quite interesting. Yeah, there is nothing exceptionally special about the gun shooting part, but combat gives you many various options. Maybe you want to board the enemy ship and kill their crew, or steal their gear, or damage their systems from inside. Or perhaps you installed powerful long-range guns on your ship and prefer to shoot the enemy ship from afar. On the other hand, some close-combat guns and lasers help you ram enemy ships if you choose it to be your tactic. It is also interesting that you can win even without a fight, because there are two victory conditions: kill all enemy ships or find an artifact, grab it, and run to an exit. The last is a pretty reliable tactic, and about half of the games end this way. This game is truly remarkable. Don't miss the chance to play it while it's still alive.

Holy MOLY this needs abandon penalty. 2/3 games my whole crew abandons before the round and im left alone. do like dota, you abandon you get put in the punishment pool, you can only queue with other people with bad behavior scores. Or heros of the storm, if you abandon you are replaced with an AI, and you can only rejoin this game until its done, you cant queue for any other.

I played approximately 161 hours of Wildgate in pre-launch playtests. To sum it up quickly, Wildgate reminds me of the times when FPS games felt almost magical and interesting and a bit quirky, and not a constant struggle against a matchmaker for ranked points, with preset and overdone strategies, et cetera et cetera. Give it a try.
