This game is incredibly stylish and well made. It looks great. So, why did I refund it? Simply put; it's not what I expected. I expected a stylish run and gun shooter like Doom or Serious Sam. Something fast paced where you mow down hordes, but need to play well as you can still die. Wild Bastards is NOT that. It's a very slow, methodical and tactical game. Playing it like Doom or Serious Sam would get you killed, and fast. It's a roguelike first and FPS second. And there's nothing wrong with that, it's just not what I expected nor wanted.

Many reviews compare it to Void Bastards, which is essentially a wrong approach. While the rouge-like nature and graphical style of the two games are similar, apart from a few basic elements, the similarities end there. It's a game where you're constantly gathering your team, upgrading your existing members, and progressing through small board game-like planets with super-rapid FPS showdowns. Some of these showdowns can last 5-10 minutes, but the majority of them will last just 1-2 mins (or sometimes 10-30 secs) instead. This is not a fault, but a core element of the game and one of the main reasons it is so frickin' addictive. The "just one more round" type of game if you want. In many ways, it's a much simpler and more basic game than its spiritual predecessor, and exploration as such is completely absent. The strategic factor here comes down to which team members you take to which situation (or more like opponent composition), what upgrade you equip them with, and how you upgrade them during your full campaign. That's it, that's all, but that's also all you need. It seems almost too simple a formula at first, but the 13 heroes, and shitton of upgrades offer just enough variation. Each hero is very, very different from the others. For me, there were more sympathetic and less sympathetic characters in the first hours, but in the end, I realized that all 13 were really useful and some were actually way better suited to certain situations than others. (not you, Sarge, sorry, but you need a serious buff) It looks like that the game has been subjected to a huge amount of balance testing, and it shows. No filler characters, which is an epic win! The story and dialogue are unfortunately more forgettable than the characters themselves. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. Honestly, it feels as if the characters and their design were invented much before the actual story itself, into which they were forced. This is palpable and the story as such has unfortunately become very forgettable and bland. The humor is there, but it lacks any satirical tone or deeper depth, rather it has a kind of Saturday-morning cartoon vibe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but for me, it was a tad disappointing. Biggest con (for me): Unfortunately, the creators have once again fallen into the same mistake they made with their previous game. There is no closure or catharsis at the end of the game, no final big confrontation, no final boss planet, and not even a simple boss fight. The game just ends - almost in a blink of an eye. It's like there's a final chapter that we didn't get. I hope that's the case and that we can take down the game's main villain in a DLC, or something because although I enjoyed the game throughout, the ending left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Of course, that didn't stop me from starting it again immediately on a harder level! But overall: It's almost impossible not to compare it to Void Bastards, I know, but we have to, because this game deserves to be treated as a unique entity of its own! It's crazy addictive and fast-paced, infinitely stylish, and very easy to just pick up for 10-20 minutes, even on a lunch break or before bed. That is if you can actually stop after that short time because the game will do everything in its power to make sure you don't. You know the drill: "Just one more planet, just one more showdown..." (PS: I need a whole game with Billy the Squid on the lead role!)

TL;DR: While it may not be for everyone, to me this is a fantastic strategy game with engaging showdowns peppered throughout. Two things that you should be aware of before you play this game: 1. This is NOT an FPS game with a Strategy System. This is a Strategy game with an FPS System 2. This is NOT Void Bastards. To address point 1, while the screenshots and trailers seems to suggest that this is a First Person Shooter first and foremost, it is not. The real meat and potatoes of gameplay is the strategic movement across two kinds of procedurally-generated maps (planetary and interplanetary) and the management and careful application of your crewmates and resources. While the gunplay that you participate in can be fun, engaging and challenging, you're actually better off avoiding fights when you can so that you can be best prepared for the fights you can't avoid. To address point 2, no really, this is NOT Void Bastards. While it shares its DNA in terms of its writing, visuals, personality, charm and Challenge, this is a very different game when you're actually controlling the player characters. While in Void Bastards, you are crawling around in cramped, maze-like ships laying traps and sneaking past enemies in a timed scenario to find the most loot, in Wild Bastards you are often placed in wide open areas with the sole objective of finding the most survivable way of killing every enemy in the encounter, strategically locating enemies and dispatching them with the tools at the disposal of the two Bastards you chose to fight with. If you are expecting Void Bastards 2, you may want to give this one a miss.

Wild Bastards is the game for people (like me) who wanted to like Void Bastards, but didn't. Everything about this game fixes what I didn't like about VB and then some. I barely managed to slog through 4 hours of VB, and 5 hours into WB the only reason I'm stopping myself from playing more is because of work. It's really fantastic, on desktop and Steam Deck. Tons of variety, good strategy, fun characters, and really tense shootouts, especially in the dark. Absolutely get this if you can!

Void bastards was more of a randomized bioshock experience. You enter a complex environment, have complex objectives, escape. There is light resource management and stealth is important for certain encounters. This is more of an arena shooter. The enemy chatter reminds me of outlaws. It's a fun arena shooter. Don't go into it with expectations set by void bastards.
