Top 5 in all single player games I have ever played. Couldn't say the position, but if you enjoy Mount and Blade style freeform swordfighting games pick this up now. Someone talking shit to you in a cutscene? Any cutscene in the game, there is a dedicated 'draw your sword' button where you can duel anyone anytime anywhere. Of course you will have to deal with the consequences, but you are meant to die and restart this game as much as you want. There is a real-time clock too, this game feels like a janky living, breathing world. Please grab this if you are bored of modern games, it will feel like a warm blanket.

Way Of The Samurai 3 is one of those games that takes a long time to understand. I'll start with the combat. That's the best part about this game. Combat consists of light attacks and heavy attacks. You have pushes and pulls. You can kick, parry and you can throw. Combo strings are done by merging inputs together. All weapons share the same kinds of simplistic inputs. All weapons have one dedicated stance. Single. Dual wield. Middle. Low. High. Unlike the first two games, there is now a telegraph for when an enemy is about to push or pull you. In the first two games, it was hard to tell when an enemy would try to push or pull you. That problem is gone. Next, I will talk about the scary stuff. This game will frustrate you at first. You will die a lot. You will be at a disadvantage until you unlock new combo strings for your weapons, and settle on a stance that suits you. Once you understand your own weapon, only then can you enjoy yourself, but even that isn't enough. You need money to upgrade your weapons. Upgrade wisely. Make sure you invest into a weapon you know you will use a lot. Money takes a long time to make. Next, warnings. Watch out for thieves. They will steal your money and run from you. If they leave the area, you will never get your money back. If you're quick, you can chase them down and throw your weapon at them. Then attack them. Always put large amounts of money in your safe at home. Only carry a little bit with you. Next, are the Tsujigiri. These are random Samurai who wander the map at night, and attack you on sight. They can and will kill you. You're gonna have a bad time if you are not prepared. Lastly, swords can break. Too many strong attacks will break your sword. Blocking too much will break your sword. If that happens during a fight, it's game over for you. Carry more than one sword. You can also break the opponent's sword and ruin his day. Fight smart. Broken weapons can be repaired. The first two games had broken weapons be forever destroyed. There was no fixing them. Now to talk about the lame stuff. Jobs. You make money by doing jobs. Every area has a job broker, and that broker will give you mindless missions that mostly have you killing something, knocking someone out or searching for something with a gimmick. This is by far the weakest part of the game and the variety here stinks. You will be running around a lot and you will get annoyed or burnt out. I assure you. It's that kind of boring. Next, let's talk about reputation. The more jobs you do, the more people will like you. Certain opportunities open up and the way npc's act around you will change. It gets crazy in a good way. Way Of The Samurai 3 has a setting that feels very alive. Everything you do matters. So, if you play like a bad guy, you'll get treated like one. It's a good way to die very early in the game. If you're a new player, don't do this until you have better weapons and some upgrades invested into them. To summarize, let's talk about the story. You're a Samurai who survived a war, and the game goes from there. You can join the Sakurai clan or the Fujimori clan. Or, you can just help people and stuff. There's about 28 endings, so experiment to your heart's content. There's tons of replay value here with Samurai points being earned at the end of every play through, which are used to unlock various things. There is no time limit, so don't let the passing days fool you. The game progresses when you actively pursue the story and only then. I won't spoil anything. I will say that way of the Samurai 3 Plus, was an expansion on the base game that stayed in Japan. Hopefully we get it someday. Overall a solid game. If you can get over the fact that it's 15 years old.

It's janky as hell, but give it a shot. I'd say WOTS 1 is my favorite, but this is a close 2nd. This and WOTS 4 are very much worth your time. Each game has its own self-contained story, so you're not required to play the first two games before this one. The WOTS series has a ton of quirky humor, and unlike RPGs that tell you every action or choice matters, in these games, they really do. Lots of endings, lots of swords to collect and modify, and lots of swordfighting techniques to learn.

It's fun for the first 4-6 endings you discover on your own, but lord have mercy if you wanna get all endings even while using a guide. Obvious issues: Seemingly gamebreaking bugs on amd gpus, 30 FPS lock, at a certain point unplayable without a guide. Other than that I really enjoyed like the first 8 hours that I played, the first few endings you get on your own are a lot of fun. But anything after is pure garbage, I tried using a guide but after failing to get the ending I want two times in a row wasting about 3-4 hours I just dropped the game. I still recommend it to people who played the games back in the day, but only on a steep discount.

It's an older game, and certainly not perfect by any means, but I had a lot of fun with it. 28 endings, I think I got 8 of them including the true ending. Spent a decent amount of time experimenting with the different moves and the Sword/Spear crafting in the game looking for the best setup and eventually I ended up with a High Stance sword I made which I could proudly say was OP. The English VA's were ... okay? I'd recommend the Japanese voice acting if that's not something that particularly annoys you. One major complaint I had was how long it took to gain "Fondness" with partners. Supposedly, eventually once a partner has enough fondness with you, they will end up staying at your house in Taketane, but despite all the time, missions, and dialogue I spent with one character, they never ended up joining at my house, and there are no visual or otherwise indicators that you are really getting close to building up enough fondness to have that happen.
