It's hard, it's grindy and it's hard to understand how the game works without a manual. But if you're into that kinda retro stuff, this game can be worth it. Do NOT buy this if you want something that's relatively easy to get into :D. Thusfar I'm having fun, though I need to install some macro program to spam heal my crew when they're downed.

As an avid fan of Fallout and Wasteland 2 , I’ve always wanted to experience the original that started it all. I’m not going to sugar coat this: Wasteland is an extremely hard game and even harder to get into. Despite having read the manual, it took me a few hours to figure out how to play the game and the first few hours were not enjoyable as I was not comfortable with the controls and mechanics. I either didn’t know what to do or how to do it. But once things “clicked” for me, I genuinely enjoyed my time with Wasteland and found myself playing for hours on end. Wasteland is more of a text-based RPG with some graphics as a bonus to help you get your bearings. Despite the simplistic graphics, the game is very atmospheric thanks to the music, beautifully written descriptions, and whacky enemy portraits. But having to use your imagination to fill in the blanks makes the experience even more fun. Gameplay Game mechanics are archaic and can be frustrating, but they are very intuitive in design. The game itself is also extremely difficult and I had to exploit the mechanics in a few points in order to progress. But it’s still perfectly playable from start to finish. On the bright side, Wasteland offers a lot of player choice in solving problems to the point of putting many newer RPGs to shame. In most cases, player choice seems limitless, all the way from blowing up obstacles, picking locks, destroying walls, the sheer number of skills and attributes to utilize, or the choice to completely ignore the objectives and fool around. My only complaint is that there are a lot of unnecessary skills to learn, a lot of them redundant or useless, while others are absolutely necessary. This is one of the reasons having a guide handy can save a lot of headache. Combat is relatively shallow and takes way too long. But on the other hand, roaming the wasteland, coming across side stories and being totally free to solve them in any way deemed proper makes it into a fantastic adventure game. This however is a double-edged sword since the game never really gives you an “objective” to complete and it’s easy to lose track of things if you’re not paying attention. The first half of the game starts with you roaming the wasteland and coming across a variety of situations to solve, but later in the game you are given a more definitive objective and the end goal becomes more clear. Learning the game Before playing, be sure to read the manual to have a better understanding of the game mechanics and controls. Playing Wasteland requires taking notes and paying attention to the in-game text prompts, and the Wasteland survival guide (that comes with the game as a PDF) is an absolute necessity. The game itself doesn’t give you much information about anything and you’ll need to learn it the hard way. I found it best to visit in-game locations in the order they appear in the guide, while also referring to the Wasteland survival guide as needed when I got stuck, and to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Verdict Ultimately, I definitely recommended Wasteland if you can look past the dated graphics and archaic game mechanics. The gameplay is nothing like newer games such as Fallout or Wasteland 2 and that should be kept in mind. I can see why this Wasteland was considered a masterpiece back in the day and the adventure offered by the game still holds up, though playing the game requires a bit of patience, and understanding of what you’re getting yourself into. I’m truly amazed how a game as primitive as Wasteland can still offer as much fun even after 3 decades.

It's OLD no doubt about it. But for a new player, it's like learning a whole other way to play. It works, it has funny writing at points, interesting to see basically an 80's idea of a Fallout universe. Also outside the jank I do like learning how to build macros and play purely off a keyboard. THIS GAME IS OLDER THAN MICE.

Wastelands was one of the very first role playing games i owned. It is sill one of my very favorite, its not easy and has one of the best stories. Wastlands was the inspiration for fallout and many other modern rpgs.

Before Fallout, there was Wasteland from Wasteland best depicts the sense of hopelessness that's iconic in Post-Apocalyptic stories, and that's probably one of the main reasons why I adore it.
