Aid the mysterious Blood Ravens defeat an Ork Waaagh, the scheming shenanigans of the Eldar and the omni-munching of the Tyranids, all while stealing other (more prominent) chapters' stuff.. First and foremost: This will be a review considering the single player campaign of the game. I did play some multiplayer back in the days, but today I would expect the online games to be few and far in between.. Dawn of War is a natural continuation of the first Dawn of War where the suspiciously well equipped Blood Ravens fought back a chaos uprising while splurting oneliners and breaking all sorts of 40k-canon. This time the main foe is the relentless hive mind of the tyranid swarm that threatens to devour the sector in its unyielding omnivorous streak of galactic domination. However, both the sly and hi-tech Eldar as well as the ferocious battle mushrooms, da Orkz, have shown up in the sector for better and for worse. Who will end up victorious in this swirling battle of domination, and will the mystery of the Blood Ravens finally unravel? The gameplay is a bit different from the first game in that you control a “hero” type character tied to a specific unit of known space marine formations. For example you have the sneaky scouts, the heavy weapon devastators and the boring but versatile tactical marines. Between missions you level up your main dude as well as equip your units with weapons and armor, tactical orbital bombardments and handgrenades, all to better subdue your foes in the name of the emperor. While on planetside you have your more standardised RTS but with an emphasis on tactical cover and item recovery. The unit's unique abilities and items make the game quite different depending on your choice of skills, yet some enemies require certain abilities to take down efficiently, so choose wisely.. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3378425989 Now, the general gist of the game is a positive one, especially if you enjoy RTSes and the grim darkness of the 40k. However, this game can get a bit grindy, especially on the higher difficulties which more or less makes defending objectives pointless. My solution to this would be, play it for the story at a lower difficulty, unless you really love running back and forth across the map to respawn and resupply.. The story is rather cheesy, but not completely without merit. I would love to see a bit more nuance in the space marines since they are more or less all grumpy old men, but then again I am of the notion that the empire is the most boring part of 40k anyways, and yet the most popular by far.. In the end this is a weak but sturdy recommendation. Nowadays you get it all for real cheap during a sale, and honestly with a coop-buddy to take the edge of the otherwise monotonous setting up and tearing down coverfire it is an enjoyable romp across a warridden sector. However, be aware that its solution to difficulty is basically making everything a bullet sponge, and if you find that to be obnoxious, go for an easier difficulty and enjoy mowing down hormagaunts like there is no tomorrow..

If you have played Dawn of War (2004) and it's expansions, do not expect the large scale battles and base building of the first installation, but rather smaller and micromanagement tactics for multiplayer. The campaign no longer has base building and is replaced with a more tactical RTS with an RPG and weapons and equipment system that allows different builds for different playstyles. The campaign is also playable in co-op which allows for easier micromanagement during gameplay albeit with good coordination and teamwork. Dawn of War 2 just marked it's 15th anniversary, and received a major update to include Chaos Rising and Retribution and DLC in one package, even though Chaos Rising was included to DoW2 in a previous update. Although it sounds great in theory, it makes the entire package only a bit less expensive than buying them separately before. I applaud Relic Entertainment for updating Dawn of War 1 & 2 because those 2 games and expansions along with Company of Heroes series are the flagship games of Relic, Dawn of War 3 is hated by new and returning players because the developers did not know the core of what players love about DoW 1 & 2. and everyone who owns the games will receive a free update. Because Relic updated one of their flagship titles, I hope one day a true DoW 1 and 2 remaster/remake will be released which actually gives long time players what they want. Maybe a proper remake of DoW 3 will be made that actually is faithful to the first 2 games, and perhaps a proper DoW 4. Hope is the first step in the road to disappointment, but let hope become faith in the Emperor that he will help Relic give the players what they truly want, and restore them to and perhaps go beyond their former glory!

It's 2024, I've had this game in my library highly recommended by a friend for 15 years and decided to finally play it yesterday. It's 3am the next day and I don't want to stop. It's so good!!! I don't know why I didn't play it before, so regretting it now, wondering if I should get Dawn of War I and play that as well; I probably will! Highly recommended!!!

Go to the game's configuration file, found in the documents/my games/ dawn of war 2/settings folder and set "raindetail" to 0. Game is absolutely nauseating without this fix. Other than that, a very fun experience.

(Played this for 400 hundred hours before sometime when steam reset my play times.) Its more squad based RTS but still tactical and fun. I lot less involved with base building and resources. More fighty bits. Love the game. Would recommend for people looking for a good single player experience and or less involved RTS.
