War Mongrels is an isometric WW2 RTS that follows the story of deserters and partisans during the second wold war, namely in Poland and even in France. "I felt bonded to the guy.. this is how sharing suffering works on people." - Manfred Pros: [*] The visuals totally match the atmosphere of a location a mission takes place in, for example missions in Poland are grim, depressing and oppressive with rubble all around showcasing the destruction while missions in France are vibrant and colorful showing that war never really touched that soil [*] The story is actually really great, I enjoyed how all the events unfolded [*] The cutscenes between each mission were uniquely made with all kinds of symbolism that makes them intriguing, but also invites the player for deeper analysis [*] Quite a lengthy experience (15-20 Hours) [*] No censorship, meaning you get to see swastikas hear nazi speeches and the horrors of war, which I find to be excellent as the game does not shy away from showing the reality of this historical era and it can be really educational as well [*] The cast of characters are really great and well voice-acted! (Even Doug Cockle is in the game!) [*] All the characters have unique abilities and equipment that lets you experiment with many different approaches during a mission and how you achieve a goal is up to you. [*] The collectibles in the game you can collect can let you read historical documents, posters, fliers and so many others that are extremely interesting [*] "Challenges" difficulty [*] Steam Achievements, Trading Cards etc. Neutral: [*] Online Co-op option, which must be great but I didn't really have the chance to try it out with any of my friends [*] Some sections of the game can be easily passed just by rushing in like with Ewald's MP40 Cons: [*] The AI can be cheesed so easily at times [*] Noticed some bugs especially when saving and reloading hastily (since you always have to experiment with tactics in games like this) [*] While zoomed-in, textures are quite low quality and unfortunately I haven't found any mods to upscale those textures [*] While playing solo, the dynamic combat system can be frustrating since you can only control one singular person at a time while all the other partisans are just standing still, I was hoping for some AI to take over while doing that. 8/10 Honestly, with some of the flaws War Mongrels is still quite a great experience, especially if you are into this era like I am, since this shows another side of the war that not many games represent and the game does that exceptionally well with its cast of characters, atmosphere and taboo topics.

Devs from hatred just casually making one of the best commando-like together with Desperados and Shadow Tactics with S+ tier voice acting and cutscenes.

Good game, but still lacks quality compared to Mimimi I consider Destructive Creations as the spiritual successor of Mimimi. War Mongrels implements almost all the core concepts of games like Commandos, Desperados, Shadow Tactics and Shadow Gambit. Even better that some aspects try to be more realistic: in Mimimi games, the characters have super-human features, like super strength (Mugen and Hector) and very fast hook ability, never missing the shot (Hayato, Yuki, and Aiko). In this game, using Lukas' hook is a slow task, aiming to the higher level, making sure the rope is tight, climbing in athletic but reasonable speed, and then getting the hook back. Not all the characters can carry bodies. Not all the characters are very good at killing: in Mimimi, everybody is a ninja, and the concept of the "Ninja Cowboy" from John Cooper amuses me, while Greta and Joachim can only kill by guns, and in theory don't have the Combat Mode (another very good addition, despite the number of situations that it can be used being very limited). The game tries to loosely couple some events with WWII, and this enriches the plot significantly, adding a dark tone that transmits the Zeitgeist perfectly. The narration is great, the story doesn't have big incoherence issues. I really like all the characters. The dialogues between them is a great addition. What really makes this game lose its shine a bit is the bugs. I know that Destructive Creations team already put a significant effort to fix issues since the release, but we are in September 2024 and many bugs still exist, especially from Chapter VI onward. Some of the ones I've experienced: - Getting stuck at stairs because there's a dog underneath; - Houses that appear all of a sudden in the middle of empty spaces; - Walls that are not walls, and enemies can walk and see through them (Chapter VII, where Joachim is); Besides, there are certain cases in the mechanics that are fundamentally bad. For instance, in Combat Mode, depending on a certain amount of shots, the next shot can be just a click of an empty gun, and the character takes a loooong time to reload. This would make sense for non-soldiers, but we are taking about war combatants here: am I missing a "reload" shortcut or something? Every shooting game has it. The great thing about being in 2024 is that games are not static anymore, and can be improved and/or upgraded. I'd ask DC team to come back to the bugs thread and polish this game a little bit. By the way, thanks for adding a very easy way to use the "RTS" key configuration. I played Chapter I with your suggested commands, and it was very confusing.

I am nearing the end of the game, and I can honestly say it's very good. No game breaking bugs so far (in fact, almost no bugs, so I don't get were the bad reviews come from). The gameplay is very similar to Desperados and the recent Mimimi games, so if you enjoy these you should give War Mongrels a try. Levels are a bit more linear, which is probably good for newcomers. Graphics are good, but it's sometimes hard to figure stuff (and particularly pick up weapons or bodies). Music is quiet, it reminded me of This War of Mine. All in all, I slightly prefered Shadow Tactics and its successors, but I love RTT games, so of course I love this one.
