This is, at the moment, the best 3D fighting game you can play anywhere. If you ended up feeling disappointed and a little burned out by the exceedingly agressive nature of Tekken 8 in its current state, this is where you want to be: Technical but not bloated, easy to pick up but endlessly challenging, elegant and easy to read. VF5 really is in a class of its own. There's basically no single-player content outside of a fairly robust training and tutorial mode, which I would normally consider a deal breaker, but this is clearly meant as a refresher before Virtua Fighter 6, and I couldn't be happier to have made the jump now. This is a fighting game that will actually make you better at fighting games. Matchmaking and overall network quality were extremely rough on release, which is the main reason for the mixed reviews, but this has now been fixed and the current state of the netcode, while not amazing, feels adequate enough. Spend time in Room matches over ranked for the best experience. Another point of contention is the fact that every single piece of cosmetics is locked behind DLCs. This is petty and kind of a shame, given that the game does have a robust character customization, but at least the base price is low enough as to remain reasonable even with DLCs added on top. The "Yakuza Series collaboration" and "Legendary" pack contain most of the cosmetics that You'll want.

Before I get to the review I do want to say the game runs perfectly on Steam Deck at around medium settings. Though if you are going to play on it do the right thing and get an ethernet dongle or the system dock. Virtua Fighter 5 is an absolute classic fighting game that has been revised numerous times over the years. This latest version is functionally the kind of remake where new visuals are over top the original game code. Some of the aesthetic changes are controversial or not to my preference but the general vibe and art direction feels appropriate within the franchise. On top of that you have an all new balance patch which in my opinion has been fantastic and really freshened up the cast in satisfying ways. The netcode was something I was very worried about with the rollback beta, but most of my concerns there were avoided in the final release. Despite the relatively low player count I have constant matches with different players and anything up to about 220 ping or so feels extremely playable to me. I have tested some lobby matches with friends who are on the complete opposite end of the planet and though there were some notable rollback frames in longer sessions it ran very smoothly overall. That is fantastic as even years from now when functionally no one is playing ranked anymore many of the room matches you find will continue to be playable. Though an update giving us more ping information alongside wifi indicators would be greatly appreciated. If you are new to Virtua Fighter I can understand being a bit scared by the legacy and complexity of certain characters, but at a very base level the series is extremely approachable and much of the cast are 'button masher friendly'. As someone who has introduced the game to several friends over the years I can tell you that even very inexperienced fighting game players quickly learned the more nuanced aspects from very standard play. Because the fighting is pretty traditional and focused it is extremely uncommon for a move to look like it has visually unpredictable properties like many current fighting games. Training mode has just about any feature you could ever want, but if you do get stuck the VF series has tons of documentation for anything that may hold you up and the fanbase in general is very welcoming and ready to assist any player. I do have a few complaints with this particular version of the game. Mainly the DLC is handled in a strange and confusing way. The vast majority of negative reviewers feel ripped off due to how poorly phrased the DLC packs are and I cannot help but agree. The base game functionally has no character customization, does not let you change the in-game soundtrack and lacks a ton of the extra stickers for reacting to matches in the lobbies. This is also on top of a ton of the customization options from Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 NOT making their way over to this newest release even if you get all of the DLC. There are a few new additions that were never in previous releases and ultimately this is just fluff, but it is unfortunate that this could not be the complete package of all things VF5. All that said, I am nowhere close to a pro and never will be, but I have likely thousands of hours played across all versions of Virtua Fighter 5 and can see myself playing thousands more. This new version while lacking in some areas is my personal favorite release of the game and even if Virtua Fighter 6 ends up disappointing me I know I will always be able to comfortably continue playing this for the rest of my life.

The Good: Virtua Fighter is no longer a mini-game in Yakuza. The Bad: Missing alot of customization's from the original VF5 and it's updates, and coming from VF4 Evo, it's lackluster in modes. The Ugly: The state that Virtua Fighter's competition is in (Tekken, DOA).

It's the definitive version of the game. Yes, it's lacking single-player content—I don't believe SEGA intended for R.E.V.O.'s audience to be of the single-player kind. You'll only be buying this game for the core Virtua Fighter experience; nothing more. If you're an old-school competitive fighting game player, you'll love it. However, if you're one of those that need story modes, world tours, and avatar customization, you should pass. R.E.V.O. is not for you.

Try this game if you miss Tekken or if you think an excellent netcode in a 3D game is not an esoteric concept People love to say VF is hard, but it's completely approachable, this game is good and fun as every game should be, now we wait for VF6,
