What happens when you mix the aesthetics of Final Fantasy , the mechanics of Paper Mario , and the story of God of War ? You get Virgo vs The Zodiac , an indie RPG about a heroine and her genocidal campaign against her family for reasons that are not all that clear. Throughout the game, you will run into a quirky cast that oscillates between silly and dark at the drop of a hat. While that might seem like a backhanded compliment, the game does a good job of riding the line of grey morality and what it means to accomplish your goals. The Good [*] Charming, arrogant protagonist: The story and characters are equally as charming as they are sadistic and arrogant. Virgo is a headstrong woman who sees everyone as beneath her and stepping stones toward starting a new Golden Age. Even her party members are treated as inferiors, and it's a breath of fresh air to have a flawed protagonist who carries out her wishes with a haughty attitude. If you enjoy arrogant characters committing atrocities, you will likely enjoy this game. [*] Engaging weapon mechanics: Combat takes some getting used to, but it features a solid weapon triangle (Cardinal vs. Mutable vs. Fixed). There is a lot of variety among weapons, so you'll easily find a favorite. The Mid [*] Underdeveloped motivations: While I enjoyed the story overall, we don't get enough time to understand Virgo's grudge against her sisters. It feels like there was supposed to be a prologue DLC to set up the premise and her desire for revenge. Even an extra chapter could have fleshed this out, but the context remains missing. [*] Inconsistent visual presentation: Art leans hard into the Tumblr aesthetic and relies heavily on quirky humor to balance the serious material of siblicide. There are also several unfinished assets in the game, making parts feel rushed before final design. While not a dealbreaker, it will deter some players. The Bad [*] Clunky controls & keybindings: Why are party members tied to specific buttons on the keyboard? This makes tracking who you are controlling and what you are doing very difficult in combat. At the very least, give us an option to mirror Virgo's key layout across all party members. It makes the combat experience frustrating once additional party members join. Summary: Overall, I enjoyed my time with Virgo vs The Zodiac as a nice palette cleanser and a unique take on the JRPG formula. It has its rough spots here and there, but overall it is an experience worth playing. Score: 7 / 10
This game has my favorite turn-based combat ever, to the point where i'm considering making a TTRPG based on its combat system. It has dynamic timing-based combat systems, with a lot of customizability, gear that gives you entirely new abilities and which you can change anytime, a row system (for example you go to the front row if you use a melee attack, and you can only target the front row with melee attacks) status effects, etc. This ♥♥♥♥ is so fun i often restart fights to see how they could go another way or to beat them while taking less damage. I like the story/dialogue too, but the combat is the highlight for me.
Virgo vs The Zodiac is a weird, memorable game. It's like if some tumblr girls decided to make their own Paper Mario and believe me I mean this in the best way possible. Pastel colored goddess decides that she's right about everything and it's time to start purging the impure. Combat is thrilling. You have 3 attacks and a guard action which grants temporary HP (purity}, and anyone who gets attacked while they have more than 0 purity gets a counter attack action. Oh, I should mention your actions are determined by your gear, and your counters are completely different than your standard turn actions. Yes you have a counter-guard. There is also a bit of elemental rock-paper-scissors that you get bonuses to based on your dialog and plot choices. Anyway during one boss fight I guarded an attack and immediately took off half its health with a counter, only for it to use a healing item on the next turn. Fun stuff.
