The last game in this series was better at being a game. This is very much an experience on-rails, like a visual novel. The writing wasn't consistently good, the central mystery was not resolvable that I could tell, I found myself skipping through the writing as it was nearing the end. If the game isn't going to be a great game, it could at least be good at being a book, but this one didn't land for me. I guess, on sale, I did play it through to the finish? So, not the worst game. But bummed me out to not be more similar to the first one, which I very much liked. Oh, and I did not like the TOTAL change-of-character for some characters from the previous game. Writer really hated Benoit for some reason, and I consistently liked him in the first game, they made him a troll in this one for no reason that I can discern. I'm waffling between recommend and not recommend. I'm going to hit recommend, but if there was an in-between of "meh," I would be selecting that.
much better than its predecessor, owing entirely to julia sowinski. julia is, imo, a genuinely ~realized~ character, extremely temporally located (arguing about calling house 'hausu' lol!), textured in very material, recognizable ways (european immigrant identity just as important to her as her journalist professional, her lapsed orthodox catholicism just as important as her sexuality), engaged in real and thorny interpersonal and extrapersonal political dynamics, engaged with the morality play inherit to the WoD setting both as a cipher for player choice and as an individual agent within the narrative. the return of many characters from the first game, especially hope, works well, albeit none are really as strong as julia herself. it's a solid IF-via-VN voice even if the prose is fundamentally on the same level as coteries. this doesn't quite get there--denouements are kind of a struggle btwn these two games--but i found myself really charmed with her character, how much she captures a pre-COVID zeitgeist. i'm not even totally sure i'd call it ""good"" writing on its face so much as compellingly imbued with personality. i love the WoD setting, it's so sad how bad VTMB2 fell on its face like that
It's almost a fence case. It's good, the story is mostly good, the new protagonist is AMAZING, a fantastic realisation of Lasombra, from their unique method of embrace through through to her struggle with the abyss and cruelty. And just as a character study, she is a well explored and interesting character. For the actual investigation though, it feels more like cameos than suspects, it's all about recurring characters from the first game more than building up it's own cast or exploring them. Dakota, the relationship and how the protagonist changes depending on trait choices, and the resolution being determined by traits not a last minute override choice is all great. I recommend it, but only if you've played the first game as even though on paper it's a stand alone story with a stand alone protagonist, it requires you to know these characters from the last game to care about seeing them in this one.
