My first-time experience playing a visual novel. Second-time experience in Vampire: The Masquerade's rich universe. First things first, I am impressed by the fullness of the universe. The player gets everything explained by a built-in vocabulary. Vampire rules, hierarchy, clans, abilities — I find each part amazing. I was fully involved in the process. The visual style is outstanding. Backgrounds are slightly animated, with shifting clouds, silhouettes, and some excellent lightwork bringing a ton of atmosphere to a setting that demands it. Music and sounds are pretty okay. Characters and their storylines are well-written. What is questionable: - Sometimes felt a lack of choices for a reply. - I didn't have an opportunity to feed for a few days, thought it was leading to 'Game Over,' but... it actually didn't affect anything? - For second and more playthroughs, there should be skips for known dialogs. P. S. And every time I see Sophie stick her finger through her lower lip (where her tongue is), I can't unsee it.

Very frustrating at times, great at other times. I'd give it a neutral review. Scratches the itch, but is also quite frustrating at times. It has serious problems with BOTH of its core mechanics: choices and hunger. An interesting book with good pictures and atmospheric background sound, but it's not a game where you choose your journey. Your choices in many cases are made for you regardless which options you actually select. Quite frustrating. 1. CHOICES. You are given choices of how you behave, then the game reports on your choices, but after that the story moves like you didn't act that way, but instead as if you've acted the way the story expected you to. Super confusing. 2. HUNGER. Your hunger level is ABSOLUTELY unclear. At some points you see the blood on the left side of your screen (the cue you are told in tutorial which indicates you are hungry) and then it disappears without you feeding. At other times you don't see the blood on the side of your screen and the beast takes over. VERY confusing. Even though I feed at every single opportunity the game presents to me. Feels like there is no point in trying to control your hunger and the beast events are just scripted to happen. I just killed a person in beast mode right outside my home. The next evening the sheriff turns up and completely ignores that fact. Just goes on where the story is intended to go next. This makes the story very disjointed. Feels completely streamlined. Pretends to be a game of choices, where in reality your choices are ignored and replaced by game developers choices. Maybe they need to use AI to make the game actually as flexible as they market it to be. An example: SPOILER ALERT During my initial encounter with sheriff I don't cause any trouble. And the sheriff says so during the trial when he recounts our interaction. The the Prince returns with the verdict and states that I did cause trouble... Seems like the planned narrative was that I did cause trouble and sheriff was rude/violent with me. The second time we meet I actually choose to try to help sheriff and we also talk normally. The third time we meet the game pretends that interaction during the second meeting (which was my choice) never happened and I'm super afraid of the sheriff due to our first interaction. Before our fourth meeting the beast suddenly took over and I killed a person close to my home. The next evening the sheriff turns up and completely ignores that fact.... This make a VERY disjointed story,

Played through all three characters, each with different approaches and well, what can I say? The decisions you make really do have very little influence in the end. Too bad, I would have expected more. However, I bought the game for only €2 in a sale, and for that price it was very good. I wouldn't recommend it at full price though.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Coteries of New York is a narrative-driven visual novel set in the Vampire: The Masquerade universe. It offers rich storytelling, atmospheric visuals, and tough moral choices. The art in this Game is atmospheric and dark, perfectly capturing the mood of the game's gothic, vampiric world. The three main characters each have distinct backgrounds and personal stories, reflecting their unique vampire clans. Their narratives explore different aspects of the vampiric world, from Toreador's artistic struggles to Brujah's rebellion and Ventrue's pursuit of power. I’ve also played Shadows of New York, and it had just as strong a story and choices. I’ll definitely play Reckoning of New York in the future as well. 6.5/10

Coteries of New York is a visual novel where you navigate NYC's dark underbelly as a new vampire. You make choices affecting the story, relationships, and power dynamics, with the option to join one of three vampire clans: Brujah, Toreador, or Ventrue, each with unique traits. The game shines with its compelling branching story and impactful choices, strong character development and relationships, and high replay value with different clans and choices. It also boasts rich lore and atmosphere of the World of Darkness. Additionally, the game features 28 achievements, encouraging exploration of different aspects, including clan-specific, story-based, and challenge achievements. However, the gameplay is primarily story and dialogue-focused, with a pre-defined character that limits customization. There are only 3 out of 13 possible clans from the tabletop game, and the clan choice has a minor impact on gameplay. Coteries of New York is ideal for fans of visual novels and the World of Darkness setting who enjoy choice-driven narratives, but it may not satisfy those seeking traditional RPG mechanics and deep character customization. Multiple playthroughs are suggested to fully experience the game.
