A great game, the series comes the closest to feeling like Fire Emblem without actually being it. It's aged very well and the port is decent. Story is basic but charming, and gameplay is very fun. Its basically an easier version of XCOM mixed in with some Fire Emblem. Some notes about the port: - SAVE OFTEN: I had one crash that happened twice right after the first mission, the first time it happened I didn't save and lost 30 mins progress. The second time I saved and it was fine. Have not had issues since but just make sure you save after every mission as there are no auto saves. - This is a port, not a remaster. cutscenes are stuck at 1920 x 1080, and some textures look bad, especially at higher resolution but its fine as long as you go in knowing that. In terms of QOL Mods there aren't many, just one that will skip the intro and load the game faster. There are some rebalance and graphics mods but they don't seem worth it.

Simple to learn, hard to master tactics hybrid that expects a lot from the player, but at great reward for the payoff when the planning and strategy pays off. The final portion of the game really pushes you to be efficient. The computer WILL take advantage of any slack you give them. The story has some solid beats, and explores war and how it affects the characters well. However, VC does have the common JRPG slump near the end where the writing has to drive toward the final boss fight. The game has aged well with its "history book" aesthetic and solid character/world design. Even the individual squad mates that would be randomly generated and lifeless in a modern game all have their own personality. Highly recommended and worth the time.

Any individual who would join a military (of any nationality. They are all, ultimately, all roughly the same in this regard,) should first turn to history as their primary teacher and advisor. History teaches us: -Exceptionalism is a threat to those above you in the hierarchy and it must be punished. -Success will earn you increasingly impossible tasks. -Political recognition is a temporary shield from a jealous structure that wants you dead simply for doing the job you were hired for. I'm not being funny; this was my experience while I was in, and this game does an excellent job of emulating that reality. In the event you don't believe this to be an endorsement: -The cast is very endearing. -The gameplay is extremely fun, once you understand the unique take on turn-based combat. -It's a slow burn, but it ramps significantly in intensity the whole way through. -Hitoshi Sakimoto has a divine gift for music. He can reach straight into your heart and pull a love for a country you've never visited (and technically doesn't exist. Alternate history and such,) straight out of your soul. -I hold the epilogue of this game as being among my all-time favorites. It's extremely wholesome, and grants an incredible sense of closure. Furthermore, "Senjou no Valkyria" (the anime) exists for anyone without the patience to play through the game.

A bold innovation in turn-based tactical role-playing games 8/10 There has never been a single excellent wargame or tactical role-playing game on the market that lacks fun, depth, or playability. Players are often kept away by issues such as complex and hardcore game rules, overly concise game tutorials, randomness that cannot be linked to the actual condition, etc. On this level, Valkyria Chronicles has achieved limited but bold targeted innovation in the original PS3 version, which was released in 2008. While retaining the fun of its genre to the maximum extent, it perfectly integrated relatively freely controllable third-person shooter gameplay into it. Even today, it has already been almost 10 years after the remastered version based on the Valkyrie Chronicles 4's engine was released, this one could still stand out among several tactical role-playing games with its unique gameplay. The story takes place in a fictional Europe during the early years of WWII, all related background, character details, and other worldview information have been comprehensive and detailed supplemented in the game. The plot that focuses on anti-war may only be described as neither good nor bad, but the moderate length, easy-to-understand narrative style, and full voice acting are perfectly coordinated with the tactical part of the game, making it feel surprisingly comfortable both in terms of gaming and reading experience. In terms of gameplay, Valkyrie Chronicles combines 2D top-view maps with 3D real-time TPS battles. Although the same unit can be moved multiple times, which is very different from its genre, the action point and limited ammunition for certain weapons could prevent excessive reliance on single-soldier combat to a certain extent. Including various strategic elements such as cover, field of view, weapon range, units, weather, reinforcements, and terrain environments such as cities, forests, grasslands, deserts, and barriers, the game is unparalleled in terms of playability, randomness, strategy, and fun. Whether you prefer infantry-tank coordination, want to push the front steady, or want to execute surprise attacks by infiltrating enemy lines, the game offers multiple strategies for players to explore. The sense of immersion, fulfillment, and achievement brought by winning through tactical layout and actual operation is unmatched by any traditional tactical game. The step-by-step, rich, and solid tutorial content in the game is enough for anyone to get started quickly, and the appropriate role-playing elements will not let players fall into repetitive and monotonous resource farming. As the pioneering work in the series, Valkyrie Chronicles fully demonstrates its bold and innovative game design, but it is undeniable that there are also various problems in the game, some of which significantly influence the gaming experience. The typical Japanese plot construction itself is inevitably narrow and superficial, lacking profound depth, and the descriptions of conflicts and the portrayal of villains are extremely stereotyped and sloppy, the ending of the story also feels too hasty. When it comes to gameplay, aside from common issues in early tactical games, such as poor AI logic and performance and long player waiting times, the extreme imbalance between units and unreasonable level ranking systems cannot be simply ignored. The Scout's exceptionally long movement distance makes it the main force in most situations, and the ranking system is only bound to the number of turns taken. On some moderately sized maps, you need to finish it in just one turn to get the highest rank. This indirectly encourages the Scout Rush strategy as the most cost-effective, simplest, and brainless strategy, which subtly affects the player's tactical choice and deviates from the game's intended design. On high-difficulty skirmish battlegrounds, it is nearly impossible to complete them perfectly on the first attempt. Players often need to rely on a large number of S/L for exploration and trial, which ultimately makes the game a bit like a puzzle game rather than a tactical one. In addition to the cumbersome chapter selection process, extremely poor tank control, and low-precision, mosaics-filled scene models, the PC version also suffers from issues such as extremely low cutscene volume and poor mouse adaptation. It may also crash without any warning, which will have a devastating impact on the gaming experience since there is no automatic save function. If the player does not have the habit of saving at will, their hard work may be wasted at any time. For fans of tactical role-playing games, Valkyrie Chronicles is definitely worth trying for its unique and entertaining gameplay. However, the unbalanced strength of the units and the unreasonable flawed ranking system make the strategic choices in this one different from those of most others. This level design, which to a certain extent encourages cutting corners, may not appeal to hardcore wargame players. Due to the poor compatibility of the PC version nowadays, it is recommended that players who have the condition to play the more stable Switch port version. If you decide it on the PC, just don't forget to save it frequently to avoid losing your process. Also, there is an adapted anime series that focuses more on the relationships between characters and the expansion of the worldview, if you really love this one then maybe you shouldn't miss it. A very unique yet accessible JRPG that successfully combines highly different mechanics and approaches. Plays like a turn-based strategy + a third-person shooter + a puzzle game simultaneously and has quite more tactical depth compared to your average JRPG combat, yet stays casual enough to feel comfortable and chill rather than tiresome. Also a very well-paced experience, with just the right balance between gameplay/plot that never turns into a grind/filler, even if you aim for all achievements. The narrative, too, displays an interesting mixture of storytelling methods. On one hand, this is a fairly dark and grounded alt-WWII story that shows the hardships of war, as well as some nasty stuff like systemic discrimination or forced labor running rampant in its shadow. Certain developments can get rather forced, but they do pack a punch, while low-key parts sneak nuance and moral greyness into the picture, especially if you consider the historical parallels. On the other hand, it stays faithful to more positive but less realistic JPRG conventions: giving the young heroes unlikely victories, placing big emphasis on friendship and morality, showing silly comedic scenes or sprinkling a dash of fan service. Some might consider this mix (plus the occasional mood whiplashes it entails) jarring or even tone-deaf, but VC handles its juxtapositions better than most, averaging out to a convincingly hopeful story about a likeable cast who fights for their right to live a simple, peaceful life – and gets it, but not without sacrifices. The visuals are every bit as eye-pleasing and stylish as they look on the screenshots. A lack of polygons might betray the game’s age, but the smart and professional design carries it forward. The uniforms, in particular, are just a pure aesthetic joy to look at. Overall, a very easy recommendation that can satisfy quite a range of different tastes (provided you don’t get too critical or analytical). And if you like it, do consider continuing to VC4 (just as worth playing, despite a few narrative hiccups) or even to VC3 and VC2 on PSP (in this order due to VC2 generally being seen as the weakest entry).
