HEAVY METAL Looks great, sounds great and plays great. All the reviews complaining about poor controls are clearly quite young, the controls are basically just classic metroid controls.

This is a VERY mixed bag. People say this game is hard, but I think they are conflating difficulty with annoying design. It's no harder than any other game of its type, really. It only gets hard during a few REALLY annoying level segments. None of the bosses are particularly unfair. The artstyle and presentation is fine, but the animation is a little stiff. It looks like they may have converted 3D models into pixel art instead of drawing it by hand. I liked it overall. The final boss was a fun challenge to overcome. The weapons are varied and interesting. Good music, too.

Very much style over substance. That's if you're into the style. Plays like you're standard run and gun shooter with some good upgrade features and pretty solid controls. Art style is a bit of a mess as it's no doubt meant to be intentionally ugly with the 'hellish' atmosphere. The games strength really lay in leaning towards its music and animations which does make it stand out just a tad. Overall, it's just a beefy action platformer that delivers the amount of fun you would expect. So if you're looking for a more gothic/metal tone for the genre, it's worth the price, especially while on sale.

If you are a fan of old-school action platformers, heavy metal, and pixel art gore, you might want to check out Valfaris, a game developed by Steel Mantis, the team behind Slain: Back From Hell, a cult hit that received good reviews and gained a loyal following for its brutal difficulty, stunning visuals, and soundtrack. Valfaris is set in a far corner of space, where you play as Therion, a fearless warrior who returns to his home planet to uncover its dark secrets and face the evil Lord Vroll. Its a game that does not hold your hand or pull any punches. You will have to fight your way through hordes of deadly enemies, traps, and bosses, using a variety of weapons and abilities. The game features three types of weapons: Destroyer, Melee, and Auxiliary. Each weapon has its own strengths and weaknesses, and you can switch between them on the fly to adapt to different situations. You can also upgrade your weapons and collect Blood Metal, a rare resource that enhances your power and unlocks new skills. Valfaris is a game that pays homage to the classics of the genre, such as Contra, Castlevania, and Metal Slug, but also adds its own twist and personality. The game is not for the faint of heart, as it requires skill, patience, and perseverance to overcome its challenges. The game is also not for the easily offended, as it features a lot of violence, blood, and profanity. The game is, however, for the fans of metal, action, and fun, as it offers a thrilling and rewarding experience that will make you feel like a rock star. However, I must admit that, in the end, I prefer Slain over Valfaris, even though Valfaris is a better and more polished game. The reason is that Slain has a more humorous and tongue-in-cheek tone, with funny dialogues, and references to viking culture, that contrast with its dark and grim setting.

Be prepared to die....a lot...and for some sections to test your tolerance of a "challenge." As much as I liked the game, it was so frustrating to play a game like this nowadays without having the right joystick to aim/shoot; instead, you have to aim with the left joystick or hold the left trigger to remain stationary while shooting/aiming. I understand that this choice was intentional to give it that "retro" feel. I don't think that this is a deal breaker, but it reminds you how much better it feels to use the right joystick to aim/shoot when you are trying to manage chaos on-screen. I managed to finish the game in under 9 hours, found all but one weapon, and found more than half of the secrets on my first playthrough. If you enjoy difficult, side-scrolling platforming shooters, this is likely for you. Also, it is great to play on your Steam Deck.
