This game will traumatize you significantly. But it's ok, the music is worth it. Uplink is a pretty realistic hacking sim where the government is 100 km from your house and approaching rapidly. Use the inherent weaknesses in IPv4 and telephone systems to make them think your house is elsewhere for long enough that you can destroy the evidence of your crimes. But be warned! Your computer is only as powerful as a potato, you've left logs all over the planet, and if you're still not quite done what you need to, investigators may take MONTHS to hit you with a game over. In this way, the game has true consequences, akin to an ironman or hardcore mode from today. You can't just start over from an older save, because the feds do not announce their investigation. Sure maybe the last save is OK, or perhaps you were had a few months prior. Maybe you just forgot a single logfile and there's still time, or maybe you were hacking five systems at once in a fugue state and just directly connected to one about a week back.

I am helplessly addicted to this game. The entire gameplay is thrilling and immensely satisfying. The design is a bit old (duh, it's 20 years old), but I barely noticed and there is a community mod to modernize the UI. 10/10 game.

Uplink is the kind of hyperpsecialized niche game that is designed to cater for the people interested in its premise and ONLY people interested in its premise. It's an old computer game where you essentially play as a hacker trying to crack into databases and perform illegal operations without getting caught. All of the appeals is how much the game spends effort into selling you the experience of being a hacker and it definitely achieves that goal. Most of the enjoyment of it comes from the "roleplay" you perform doing your odd jobs and hacking and from the mechanical challenges of juggling the many security systems and the agility required to perform all operations you have to do in a limited span of time. A simple, but fun and very worthwhile game if you're interested on the genre and want something more gameplay driven.

Wake up, hacker. Time to hack the planet Still holding strong after 20 years since the release. During all this time, I still haven't found a similar game that could completely replace it.

Played Uplink a lot when I was a teenager. UpilnkOS is a great overhaul for the game, but a month ago I found out about Onlink x86, a Mod that extends the game and make it a big modern. Great game overall.
