Thoroughly recommend this game if you're looking for a fun retro hacking experience that isn't too hardcore. It is my favorite hacking game and love coming back to this. Highly recommend checking out the UplinkOS mod that others here have mentioned, it really brings the game into the modern era. 10/10 no notes.

fun classic hacker game, captures the vibe, challenge, and pseudo mechanics. This is more hops and logs, security breaking with premade tools for remote access than programming. it does have a small curve but you can make your own fun too, like paying off everyone's debt or sending rival hackers to jail. You can copy/sell databases, take down systems, give yourself every degree and certification.

More Than Just "Progress Bar: The Video Game" Watching a clip of someone playing this game doesn't really do it justice, because on the surface it's a pretty dull game. No flash, just substance. Learn the tools of the trade, work your way up the ranks, acquire funds (legally or otherwise) to upgrade your equipment, it's all very satisfying. At a certain point the story events start to unfold, and you can choose to engage with it or not (though there is an invisible timer, and if you wait too long you will be locked out), at which point you're just playing for points. Pro Tips: Don't accidentally leave your game timer on fast-forward, especially if you still need to clear the bounce logs from your latest hack. The FBI can show up faster than you think (in the game). :D

Got paid 12,000c to hack a guy's bank account and transfer 1200c into the same bank account. 10/10 Install the UI mod, UplinkOS, for a more modern experience.

While in elementary school I remember installing Uplink on my friends computer and telling him it was some "new work program" I found on my Dad's desk. "Uplink?" my friend asked, "Uplink to what?" I started it up and pretended to freak out as Uplink goes through it's surprisingly awesome boot sequence. I will never forget the look of horror wash over my friends face as he assumed he is now enrolled in a top-secret hacking agency and this must be his life now. For the time this game was unbelievable, and although it's hard for me to judge completely unbiased, with such a powerful sense of nostalgia, I would say it still holds up today. Like many of the other reviews say it is a bit grindy, and the map is the most glaringly dated component. The soundtrack though absolutely slaps, I still listen to it sometimes. I ended up going into IT and I sometimes wonder if this is the first spark to a deeper passion of understand how technology works under the hood. 10/10 in my heart, but 7.5/10 for a new player in 2024.
