The pompous retro 80's atmosphere with its carefree clichés and music are the main thing here! The era of Miami Vice, Hanoi Rocks, synthpop, C64 computer weekends, prank calls, VHS (/w Betamax!), BMX bikes and sharp styles. If you loved Thimbleweed Park (2017) / Alien Incident (1996) you'll like Unusual Findings as relative mixture! Vinny, Nick and Tony are three different youngsters of witty, rebellious and adventurous type. The interaction interface here is a simple pie menu akin to the likes of Lucasarts' Full Throttle. There can be quirks when the requirement is for example to cooperate with a fellow kid; there is no straight out way to "ask" for example clicking the witty (geeky) Tony. One speciality is that there is no additional savegame mechanism (nor need really); the game is *just saved all along* as you go. This proved to be a working decision because no game breaking bugs were found. There are no dead ends either (even though you might occasionally swear it happened), but many ways to go forward and several different endings. There is more to play then after your 1st run! Iconic 80's film and band posters are scattered everywhere with variably funny changed names. Spot 'em all? Despite of some of its frustrating puzzles - Unusual Findings is a modern insta-classic you'll return just for the atmopsheric nostalgia hoot. Retro is a helluva drug, yes. Oh, and the The game is grrrreat on Steam Deck despite the still Unknown status.

Absolutely top-notch experience. Be aware the the seemingly unimportant choices you make during the start of the game affect the options you get later, for example one of my characters destroyed an item I thought I needed to complete a task, but there was another way. Make sure you sit through the credits for the Easter Egg afterwards, it wraps everything up with a nice bow.

Unusual Findings is fine. The best part of the game is the music, which is a nice synthwave nod to our memories of the 1980s. Unfortunately most of the other nostalgia attempts didn't land for me. A lot of the game is spent dropping mangled and mispronounced references to the most well-known games, movies, shows and bands from the decade. It feels like a "Remember the 80s" TV special, which superficially touches on all the big hits but never really feels like an authentic depiction of the era. There's no moment where you're like "oh wow, I totally forgot about this thing", because the only things that are referenced are the things that everybody always references - Star Wars, Back To The Future, you name it, it's all there. At the same time as being predictable in its pop culture references, it also feels a bit too stuck in the perspective of nerdy teenage boys. The characters are all stereotypes lifted from mainstream media of the era, which - although fun enough at the time - can come across as a bit awkward and dated when seen through a contemporary lens. There's nothing wildly problematic, but it feels like a missed opportunity to tell a more interesting story centering characters and perspectives that we haven't already seen a million times before. All that said, it's still an okay game. It's a point and click. You solve puzzles. None of the puzzles are too hard. Most of them are hinted in lines of dialog or by reading through item descriptions. The biggest problem is the navigation, which doesn't always make it clear when there is more of an area to explore. Sometimes - after checking the walkthroughs - I realized I had missed clicking on some part of the scene that would scroll to reveal more clues. Mildly frustrating, but not too bad. As far as indie adventures go, it's decent. I probably wouldn't recommend this unless you are a hardcore adventure game fan because the story and dialog isn't especially compelling, but if you are a hardcore fan like me, it's an alright diversion.

Pretty nice game, the atmosphere is similar to one of the awesome Netflix series - Stranger Things. The spirit of adventure, mysticism, conspiracy theories, funny dialogues of geek friends and very cozy pixel graphics are what this short game offers me. I loved it from the very first minutes. For me personally, it's the best find of the year among indie games! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3301197502

If you’ve experienced childhood in the 1980s, and/or are a fan of pop culture of that decade, Unusual Findings is an adventure game that you should check out. The developers took inspiration from movies, music and video games of that time, and crafted a game that celebrates and pays homage to this era. The game captures the zeitgeist of the 1980s in its creative and art directions: the graphics reminded me of those from Lucasfilm Games’ early adventure titles; character designs and plot elements had hints of Back to the Future, The Goonies and E.T. to name a few; and somehow, the developers got the rights to Dead or Alive’s You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) to have it as the game’s title track. Pretty radical I must say. Unusual Findings is quite by-the-book when it comes to point-and-click adventure game design. I didn’t find the puzzles too difficult, though I did need some pointers for a few. What’s impressive is that your responses to your friends – in form of binary choices – affect how your companions and supporting characters treat you. This means there can be multiple solutions to the same problem, adding a bit of replayability. By my third playthrough to unlock the last of three possible endings, however, I’ve had my fill of Unusual Findings. That’s still a lot of game for an indie point-and-click adventure title that plays it pretty safe. Unusual Findings may not break the mould – in fact, it has similar vibe as Netflix’s Stranger Things – but don’t let it deter you from playing it. The story is interesting, the dialogue is snappy, and the game design is solid. The developers’ love for the 1980s and their passion for this project can be seen and felt in every scene. The references to 1980s pop culture makes Unusual Findings stand out among its peers. It helps that it has modern adventure game design sensibilities to appeal to contemporary audience, and features plenty of references to ’80s pop culture to give it a retro cool. If you’re looking for a game that makes you nostalgic for that decade, Unusual Findings should be one of the top choices for your next purchase.
