UnReal World has completely re-contextualized to me what the "survival" genre is. When I have think of games tagged with survival, I think of games like Minecraft or The Forest. In most survival games, there are systems to determine the efficacy of your survival. For example, Minecraft and The Forest have bars to determine how hungry or tired you are. Even relatively inexperienced players can quickly "solve" these bars with reserves or finding easy and periodic ways to re-fill these bars. With time, survival becomes obsolete- it's an early challenge that gets curtailed quickly as you progress through the game. Survival simply becomes second nature to the game experience; surviving is no longer an objective. In UnReal World everything is about survival. There is no ulterior motive to your survival- all you want to do is live. In aforementioned titles, you will hold an axe in your hand within minutes of playing. In UnReal World, you must meticulously gather all the materials for an axe. You will need to bind the birch tree scraps by hand to make rope strong enough to hold a rock, which you sharpened upon a stone. You will get cold, and need to take many breaks while doing this; you will get hungry, and need to take many breaks while doing this. In aforementioned titles, a home will serve as a central place for storage or a rendezvous to checkpoint at. In UnReal World, a home is for warmth to survive the brutal cold of the winter. In aforementioned titles, a home will something you easily make after interacting with a tree and then bringing raw tree materials to a menu that makes them into your home. In UnReal World, you must arduously chop down every tree. You must turn the felled tree into a log. You must fatigue yourself pushing the log inch by inch. You will get tired. You will collapse in exhaustion over the simple act of moving a log. Do this 5 more times and you can build the corner of your house. All while needing to make sure you don't starve, you don't get too cold, you don't get so tired you fall over. In my limited experience to the game, I have realized that the "survival" genre has been tagged onto so many games wherein survival is not the main goal. If you want a game where you are truly fighting to survive, UnReal World will deliver an unparalleled experience. As many have commented, this game's control scheme is keyboard only. It is a learning curve, but it's not unconquerable. Within a couple hours, I was comfortably interacting with the world. The in-game tutorial and resources give enough information paired with the online resources that any new player can comfortably have an enjoyable survival experience within their first 1-2 hours of game play.

Let's continue giving this superb game thumbs ups, so more people can buy the game, so the developer can make enough money to HIRE A DAMN UI/UX DESIGNER, because that interface has no right to be this level of obtuse and clunky.

There really isn't anything like this game. It's about surviving and thriving in early iron age Finland. I love it. I'm also not sure how to do it justice. The graphics are simple, and the user interface is unique, which some may find initial barriers to entry. Learning to survive is a big part of the game, and figuring out how/where to shelter, and how to get food/regular calories is the first major hurdle. The first successful hunt is a 'pump the fist' moment. There can be lots of personal moments like that in the game - some have to do with building/crafting something major (a cabin, a raft, a fishing net, etc); others happen through learning about how to thrive - becoming competent at fishing/hunting/trapping/agriculture; learning about the different climates, geography, and related flora and fauna; encountering the different cultures and navigating the world; engaging with the mystical and magical. It does take time to become familiar with, but the time spent learning to play also helps immersion - the game is less like thunderclaps of events/action, and more like gently draping a sheet over a table, or going for a early morning/evening walk (dying suddenly IS usually a bit of a thunderclap though - there are lots of ways to go if you're incautious or unfortunate). I recommend trying UnReal World. If you do, and find the going rough, try to stick with it until you make your first successful hunt - you'll know at that point if the game resonates with you.

The more time that I actually spend outside in real life, the more I resonate with this game. There are small moments of magic: the quiet of ice fishing a lake at sunset. Picking cloudberries in light rain. Unreal World captures the rich layers of nature's rhythms and cycles using its "simple" UI and concise descriptions. This is the most profound video game representation of nature I've ever played. It has made me think about what it means to be in tune, to be mindful, to be time conscious, and to be prepared - an important work.

I finally bought this on steam to support the dev, and so that I could leave this review. This game has been available for, and developed for decades, it has already been reviewed, streamed, and blogged about so much - what else is there to say? Well I feel a need to say this. All the people who have bought this game on steam, didn't have to. They could have stuck with the free version. They, we, bought it because we wanted to. Pure and simple. Why? Why not just play the free version, why choose to hand over good money to the developer of this game? That is going to vary from person to person, so I can add my reason. When looking at screenshots or streams of the game... well it looks kind of weird, like someone just put together some icons and text and... is that really a picture of some random person dressed up? It seems like it is going to feel a bit awkward to play, compared to the kind of interfaces we are used to these days. Well, playing this game is like discovering the difference between an aged fine wine or cheese and some processed cheap generic stuff. It is like tasting that organic tomato that blows your taste-buds away when you have been eating intensively farmed standard 'tomatoes' for so long you forgot what a real one would taste like. I make these comparisons because some things are difficult to put into words, they relate to the kind of experiences that only seem to be shareable by the great lyricists or dancers or sculptors, the rest of us just are lost for words and kind of go... "I dunno but it seems to do something..." Those funky graphics, the weird art, the unusual words, the wtf is that even there for? They combine to create a unique gaming experience that has evolved and been nurtured over decades to be what it is, not to achieve a commercial or artistic goal but to simply be itself. And it is an experience worth having and worth repeating and not commonly found today, certainly not to be found in a 'computer game'. And these things, when we encounter them, like suddenly encountering a rare and beautiful bird, or a surprising delightful sound, they make us go 'Hey, look at that!', 'Shhh listen!' We want to share it. So there is is. Another review.
