If Rambo and Tropic Thunder had a baby, it would be Unmetal’s second cousin twice removed. Because Unmetal would be way cooler than that kid. After being shot down by allied forces while flying a Soviet war helicopter, Jesse Fox is arrested and brought into the base for questioning. Military Interrogator: Name? Jesse Fox: My name is Fox. Jesse Fox. Military Interrogator: You don’t seem to be Russian. Jesse Fox: Russian? Me? Military Interrogator: You were piloting a Russian aircraft two hours ago. Jesse Fox: I also drive a Toyota, and I’m not Japanese. SOLD. Based on solid logic.

An enjoyable short adventure in the skin of the original Metal Gear game for the MSX. Metal Gear is easily one of my favourite games from that era, so I was bound to enjoy this one. The game consists of small areas/stages, it's not as sprawling as Metal Gear was. The game is heavy on the narration, which I skipped from time to time, though I found dialogue to be mostly amusing and a driving force between the gameplay segments. I've now tried all of this devs Steam games, though it's only his most recent two that I enjoy ( UnMetal and Pampas & Selene ). I feel that the dev has really grown & improved to a point where I will be excited for whatever his next project is.

"Because no one threatens me to tell the truth." One of my favorite tropes in gaming is the Unreliable Narrator. When it's done well, a narrator messing with the story can make for a really interesting, twisted story in a way that isn't possible otherwise. In video games, it works even better, because it allows the gameplay to change dynamically as the narrator remembers things, makes corrections, or makes things up. UnMetal is one of the finest examples I've ever seen of this type of game, sitting alongside Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. Jesse Fox weaves a creative, layered, and over-the-top story, twisting the game world to his whim, with an all-timer of a bait-and-switch at the end. In terms of overall gameplay, UnMetal is largely the same as Metal Gear 2 and Ghost Babel, with a bunch of modern quality-of-life features added in. You do not need to select the right keycard in your inventory, thank goodness. You'll sneak around and perform takedowns on guards (and drones, and fish people (yes, really)), avoid being spotted, fight a boss at the end of each chapter, you know the drill. It's solidly executed, although it can feel a bit hand-holdey at times. If you've enjoyed the Metal Gear games, especially the 2D ones, you'll feel right at home here. Also, fitting in with the shifting narrative, you'll be given dialogue choices with a direct impact on gameplay at several points. Be warned, however, that the gameplay can boil down to trial-and-error sometimes. You'll get a number of game-overs from one or another of the game's practical jokes. Fortunately, the game is also pretty generous with its manual and automatic save points, so you should never lose much progress. Still, if you're the type to get easily frustrated, this might not be the game for you. Speaking of practical jokes, I have to talk about the game's humor. Obviously, UnMetal is a parody of Metal Gear, and a piss take in many ways. It's full of references, and much of the comedy hinges on those references and shout-outs. What this means is, while it's very funny to people in the know, it's not very accessible. That said, you can enjoy the non-referential jokes if you're not as media-savvy as the intended audience. Also, the game is fully voice-acted! I just felt the need to mention that. Some of the lines are a bit stilted or disjointed, but on the whole, it adds to the experience. The characters are so much more lively than they would have been otherwise. I'm also pleased at how the F-bombs have been toned down compared to UnEpic . I don't normally complain about profanity, but it was overused in UnEpic to the point of being distracting. The dialogue in UnMetal still leans on F-bombs too much, but not nearly as badly, and the military setting makes it feel more organic. UnMetal is an unabashedly fun and funny game that delivers a unique story in a way few other games can. No wonder I keep coming back to it. Highly recommended for fans of Metal Gear. However, if you're not familiar with the stealth-action genre, you may want to try a different title first.

A funny foil to the usually serious stealth genre. Combat was a bit lacklustre, though I'm only saying that because the game forces you into it sometimes. The story is solid enough, bolstered by an ending that could only ever fit in a parody game like this one. I'm still not sure if I took down the final boss the right way. Buy on sale.

Love the game, love the characters, is short but fun. The most engaging aspect of the game is the story, the MC couldn't be funnier I wanted him to be with the doctor but my heart shattered at that thought at the end.
