In Unforgiving: A Northern Hymn, I couldn’t help but question the initial setup as it didn’t really make sense story-wise, but moving past that I was drawn into the protagonist’s trek through the woods. There were Swedish folklore-inspired monsters to either run from or sneak around; very much the typical indie horror stuff, including a limited light source and simple puzzles that required finding and using objects. It was linear by all accounts, yet it was possible to explore some areas. The thing that stood out the most was the harp, which was used to play notes that opened the way forward. I might not sound too enthusiastic overall, but while it didn't push boundaries or anything, it was a decent enough indie.

Short but sweet and dedicated to Swedish folklore. Much too dark in terms of lighting though, I could hardly see a thing even with matches. A bit confusing and rough but for a first-time studio it's a good brief romp. Get it on sale.

'Unforgiving - A Northern Hymn' is a 2017 horror game and the debut game from the small little Swedish indie developers Angry Demon Studio. What we have here is a horror game rooted in Nordic Mythology, especially the Swedish kind. And it's pretty well done for being "kiddies first game". Needless to say it's a bit rough around the edges and you can clearly see that it's a studios first game. That said the core idea behind the game it is solid although not groundbreaking in any way. Since the game is set in Sweden and the characters are Swedish naturally the voice actors are in Swedish by default. As a Swede and a long time gamer I'm not used to that so when I first booted up the game and started to play and the voices started I was like "What language is that?" it took me two solid second before I was like "Oh.. it's my language!" Hahahaha πŸ˜† The Swedish voice actors goes from excellent to pretty damn all right. Not bad at all for most likely being amateurs. They also have English voice actors but I didn't play the game with those so I can't comment on that. The music is pretty damn all right. It has the cosy/scary horror thing going on but with a Nordic flair to it, especially Swedish folk music is an inspiration at some places. I really like it. It's made by a guy named William Sahl, he's only credit for composing for this and other Angry Demon Studio's games so he might be a in-house composer, which is rare these days. πŸ™‚ The game is very short be all means. I took it slow to soak up the atmosphere and I clocked out in 3 hours. And I don't think their are alternative endings to it (which is fairly common in horror games) but who knows maybe the internet hasn't discovered any yet. So except to get all the achievement the game doesn't really have much replayability. But I would advice getting it on sale anyway. If not just to support the fledgling developers. And the game as charm and some quality to it. And a sound premiss. Nordic Mythology and horror is a good mix and a Swedish forest in the dark at night with little to no light can be dangerous and freighting experience. And the game nail that atmosphere. Buh!! πŸ‘»

I'm not a fan of horror games, but decided to get this game since I like norse mythology / folklore.. and it was better than I expected! At first I felt a bit lost having to explore a spooky forest, but during the gameplay it became very enjoyable, especially because it's not difficult and tense all the time. The environment and creatures were quite scary for sure, good sound effects, a few bits reminded me of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and also of Dead by Daylight. Getting information about the folkloric creatures when you find open books, and the idea of having to play a harp with runic notes to unlock doors were a very nice experience and idea. I didn't like the ending much, but it was a game worth playing for sure!
