This is a good game; maybe a very good game. The choices that prevent it from being a great game are disappointing & infuriating. It is an indie game, and old enough that I wouldn't expect the dev to fix the flaws. I recommend playing this, but maybe wait for a good sale. I think I may have acquired this in a Humble Bundle from ten years ago. I recently played Castlevania Lords of Shadow and was disappointed that it's more a God of War clone and less of a continuation of what was so amazing in Symphony of the Night. A Google search turned up UnEpic as a good SotN clone, and that's exactly why I recommend this. I've been playing this on my Steam Link using the Steam Controller. There's so many little unpolished things that hurt the gameplay that it's a weighted recommendation. - The inclusion of wands with no way to buy replacements or recharge them was a choice. - The restrictive inventory isn't by itself a dealbreaker, but making quest items take up space in that limited inventory was also a choice. - Including a bank vault was great, but there's nothing guiding a new player there until you happen to find it on a decade-old Reddit post. - Allowing you to discard items required for completing quests and then providing no way to acquire them again was certainly a choice. - Missable quests with no warning, specifically one that you can wreck bubby merely letting your pet kill random mobs, is an aggravating choice. - Controller is definitely the way to play, but integration is iffy. The default configuration was terrible and needed replaced. Text entry (required for starting the game, or adding notes to the map) is a bad experience and requires an actual keyboard. Inventory management has no auto sort options (another choice), and requires dragging and dropping which, you guessed it, can't be done with the controller. - The jump mechanic is terrible; instead of pressing a button to jump, you press up on the directional pad / joystick, and it's amazing how many times the character just decides to leap into lava, an abyss of spikes, or similar fatal trap when you absolutely didn't want that. Bottom line: this game really tries to sabotage itself, but ultimately it survives its death-by-a-thousand-cuts decisions. This really could have been a great game with a bit more polish. I understand it's old, and an indie game to boot, but if you get that itch to play something like SotN, this totally scratches it. I wish I'd thought to try it out sooner.

I bought this game around 10 years ago, played for maybe 20 minutes and then didn't play again until this week, and I’m glad I went back. The dialogue has aged poorly, and it’s all cringe-pop culture references, but the game itself is fun to play. The quests are varied, the map design is great, theres lots of different builds, and you have to think carefully about how you level up because at most you can get 2 respeccs throughout a game. It has a few less-than-fun mechanics (looking at you polymorph), but overall it’s solid. Took around 25 hours to beat. Plus the voice acting is solid. Edit: Also, this game might feel brutal at times but it fixes everything I don't like with other metroidvania-style games. 1) Need to return to the person who gave you a quest? theres a scroll you can buy that does that. 2) Can't remember what was in a room? You can write in notes on the map for each section 3) REALLY stuck and no clue? There's a scroll that will hint without giving you the solution. there's a whole bunch of other small QOL adjustments that really make Unepic a hidden gem. I just wish the dialogue was better.

Unepic is one of those rare indie titles that completely took me by surprise. At first glance, it looks like a quirky little platformer-RPG hybrid, but once you start playing, you realize it’s packed with personality, depth, and an infectious sense of humor that keeps you smiling even while you’re being mercilessly punished by traps and enemies.
