Alright. Under the Sand REDUX - a road trip simulator is a study in the dichotomy between a game being a labor of love and a game not having enough content or variety to really see the fruits of that love. I tried playing this a couple times in the past, both pre and post Redux and it was always an incredibly rough experience. This time around, the rough edges have definitely been smoothed out. So, what is this game, really? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3251134348 It's exactly a road trip simulator, set in what is described as a peaceful post apocalypse. Some of the assets in the game do corroborate this premise to an extent. The abandoned military camps and checkpoints, the knocked down utility poles and lines, collapsed bridges and so on. Is there actually a story though? No. And that is really a shame. A story would definitely serve this game well and offer some motivation to the player. As it stands, what you actually do in this game is repair vehicles and take them out on road trips, where you can find upgrade materials for your vehicles, new vehicles to add to your collection, food and beverages, supplies to maintain your vehicles, and in one instance I found, some swag to spruce up your vehicle. All this is accomplished by finding places of interest along the way which you'll get out of your vehicle to search in hopes of finding the aforementioned stuff. There are maybe ten types of locations? Not a lot of variety. One thing I did find is that by moving pallets in places like garages when the option is available, you can also find bunkers with a few more supplies. And the developer seems to like placing mannequin assets in various places, which can be mildly unsettling in a place such as a dark bunker lol. Beyond that, the world is absent people other than yourself and the occasional shopkeeper who run truckstops along the highway and country roads. Shopkeepers offer the same items you can find and can also transport goods you don't want to risk losing back to your home to be used later. This is important because if you break down, run out of gas, or somehow get yourself killed (which tmk can only happen via broken glass and climbing up building and jumping off), you have the option to go back home. But, you lose any object not directly attached to your vehicle, which can be substantial depending on how far you've gone and how many places you've searched. You don't lose acquired cash however, which is nice. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3251151952 And that is basically the gameplay loop in a nutshell. There are only really two biomes, and so you will be driving through some version of the same desert roads and highways, occasionally with the addition of grass. This does get very boring after a bit. Especially when you factor in the relative lack of unique locations to explore. What this game really needs is a story mode as mentioned earlier, could probably benefit from having achievements, and definitely needs more assets to offer a wider variety of biomes to drive through. As it stands, you more or less have seen it all after an hour or two. Maybe the specific layout of each area changes, but the assets used definitely do not. While it is listed as having partial gamepad support, the reality is this game is not well suited to a controller and absolutely is a hassle to play on the Steam Deck. You will want to stick with k/m if at all possible, or spend some time mapping everything to suit your preferences if you have to use a gamepad of some sort. Also, this game will freeze fairly consistently, and will lock up your computer in those moments. I'd guess its CPU usage reaches 100%, but I didn't specifically look to find out. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3251151961 All in all, this is definitely a pleasant experience, but one without much variation. To me, this is a buy on sale title. I think ten bucks, while not substantial, is a bit much for the content being offered even though you can technically play this for hours and hours and hours. Under the Sand is not a bad game, but it is an incredibly limited one.
