TL:DR 7/10 Are you looking for a narrative-driven adventure game smothered in spirituality, mythology, the supernatural, and an undying (both figurative and literal) love for NYC? Well then, basically any Wadjet Eye original will suit your fancy. This is the best one. It's a fascinating urban fantasy landscape that matches the vibes of The Blackwell series so closely, it might as well be a spin-off. Its world-building might not withstand the scrutiny of a full-fledged fantasy series, but for a project of this size, it holds together. Occasionally, there's too much exposition. That's an occupational hazard of world-building fiction. Here, much of it is tucked away in optional dialogue, and most players will be eager to learn what drives this universe and its personalities. There were several moments when I braced myself as the dialogue veered into cheese, but all collisions were averted by Wadjet Eye's pitch-perfect voice casting, commitment to the narrative, and earned character arcs. Those arcs unfold through the main plot, but also through incredible interstitial banter between companions and intricately filled environments. I just wish whatever technology inserts voice acting clips could facilitate shorter gaps, as there's inauthenticity in the lagging cadence of conversation. There are an annoying number of ways to play, specifically, paths to take through the game. Self-admittedly annoying to implement, so says Dave Gilbert in the lovely commentary tracks. More importantly, annoying to play. You feel like you're missing out, and you truly are: huge portions of the game's writing are easy to miss without tedious replays. Since each companion has different powers, the puzzles have different solutions depending on who's in your party. This means the puzzles must remain relatively simple. On the other hand, because they're tailored to each character and never too complicated, they're masterfully blended into the story. The aforementioned commentary tracks, as always, offer an insightful glimpse into what it takes to be a brave, semi-famous indie game bard. They reveal the countless invisible design principles, the founts of creativity, and the self-awareness required to cut completed work that doesn't work. It's both inspiring and intimidating: the perfect pump-fake to nudge a wannabe adventure writer to the edge of starting a project, only to remind him that he's not ready. He'll likely never be ready.
TL;DR: A very fun Point and Click Adventure. Pros: - Story: The story is reminiscent of many other Urban Fantasy stories but has enough twists and turns to keep things interesting. There is twist about 75% through the game that is fantastically executed and recontextualises a lot of the prior content. Characters are somewhat uneven. I liked Eli and KayKay but the other members of the team were a bit meh. Funnily the games side characters are actually far more memorable as I sit down to write this review than some of the team members Most of the Moral dilemmas the player character faces are actually somewhat interesting and do give the player pause to consider what is the best option (and mercy is not *always* the right answer) - Graphics: Superb. Monster designs are all memorable and some of the background work is phenomenal. - Atmosphere: Well maintained what with the pouring rain and effective sound effects. Feels very noir, just as intended. Neutral: - Length: It took me about ~6 hours to complete the main story. - Puzzles: The puzzles were mostly just OK. There are a lot of them but only 2 actually gave me any pause for thought. A few more head scratchers would not have gone astray. Cons: - Voice Acting: the voice acting of some of the characters is great (especially the main crew) however some of the side characters voice acting was extremely grating. Conclusion: A competent point and click adventure carried by its fun pulpy story and superb atmosphere.
The Blackwell & Unavowed games might be one of my favourite shared universe adventure game series yet. The characters are flawed (complimentary), rounded, all damaged in their own ways but full of hope, and very easy to love. All the games are essentially about grief, and care, and love (and New York). I love this world and want to spend so much time in it so thank you to Wadjet Eye for giving us six games of it.
One of the better point and click adventures out there. The voice acting is top notch and is really the star of the game. The puzzles are not overly difficult, I like that you're not juggling 20+ items in your inventory to find the obscure item to progress the game. The story while it takes a little while to get going to truly understand what is going on, the character build up is excellent. Length is right around 10-11 hours with replay options if you want to complete all achievements or see what different actions in some instances have on the story as a whole. From an old school Lucas Arts fan who grew up with Maniac Mansion & Zak McKracken, I can certainly recommend this title.
