I was saluting to the screen of my computer as my frigate was sinking. It was my flagship. It has been traded for victory in a battle so hard that I did not even consider restarting. I hesitated a lot before buying this game. I was wrong, I regret my hesitation. This is currently the best game about tall warships. It is way better than any of the Total War naval combat and much deeper than Naval Action or Sea Dogs I'll compare it to Napoleon: Total War What it does better - Way better morale simulation - More detailed damage simulation - More detailed crew simulation - Much better ship movement - Battles are not obvious and can be decided in any phase - It has complex and very good fleet management - it is really difficult and rewarding What it does worse: - It does not look as good - It has a slightly higher system requirements (Unity) - The pace is slower (it is not a disadvantage TBH) - There are land battles too. They are good but not as good as naval ones. They can't be skipped in Campaign mode Yes, it is currently the best game of this genere. Completely worth it

I finally pick this game up and loved it. It was the first game that I beat 1 of the campaigns through and through (not because it was short but because I put >50hrs in). I am a slow and tactical gamer so it my by ~30hrs for those who are fast pace. I just bought the American Revolution version because I loved this game so much.

This is a wonderfully well-made game. I have played it for 17 hours and loved it. I did see small inaccuracies but they did not bother me as the quality of the game outweighs the negatives part of the game. The campaign's battles and visuals are phenomenal, the details and the historically accurate structures and ship allow you to visualize what it would have been like to fight during the Age of Sail. The game has a large focus on Naval engagement and not too many amphibious assaults which caused this game not to have too many land maps which is the only downside as I would have wanted to see Spanish and French soldiers fighting and being commanded by me in such line battles. Yet this game is still worth buying it would work perfectly if you want to buy a cheaper version of Ultimate Generals newest game American Revolution or to try out Ultimate Generals.

I would give this game a neutral review if i could. While the overall game is great, like the mechanics, the hybrid battles, the sea battles and the administration of your ships, the game has one big problem which is balance. Do notice i played on Normal mode both for Naval and Land warfare. One big thing that plagues the gameplay is the morale, which affects you twice as much as it affects your enemies. A lot of times enemy ships will be completely depleted of health and will be actively sinking, but the enemy will not surrender, while your ships will run away after taking just some light hull damage. It isn't much different in land battles, where your units will run for their lives after losing 2 units to artillery fire while the enemy can take over 7 shots and not care. The second big thing that plagues the game is how it gives the AI so much to work with. The story missions are linear (You can click a button which makes the enemy escalate their ships together with yours) and the delevopers really thought about every action the player would make and placed obstacles there. You want to flank an area? The developers have a couple of soldiers and artillery waiting for you. You brough 200 men? The Developers made sure the enemies would have double. You want your ships to assist your units on land? The developers made sure your cannons wouldn't be able to hit for just a couple of meters. Basically whenever you want to try something to change the course of the battle, the developers put something there to stop you, in conjunction with the terrible morale your units have in comparison to the enemy units, you cannot win that engagement. So like i said earlier, while the base of the game is great, the way you don't really have any freedom to change the course of the battles really kills it.

Probably one of the most mixed reviews ive ever felt about a game. First and foremost I love the game. I've completed both non-DLC campaigns and have played again. Aesthetically its incredible, and I wish there was more games about the time period and method of gameplay. Mechanically it is beyond frustrating. There have been countless times ive had to restart a mission because of some foolish design. - Ships retreating but still sinking afterwards - Enemy ships being captured but retreating anyways despite having no crew - Rowboats travel at 5x the speed of any ship meaning they can reinforce a ship you are boarding from half the sea away before you take it - Ships randomly capsize sometimes - Enemy S.O.L. can sail backwards into the wind (wind from behind and still traveling into it), and can sail like a motorboat, but when captured travel at 1/3 the speed they just had - a single enemy frigate can often destroy 3-5 friendly corvettes - a single enemy SOL can destroy 5-6 frigates - worst of all, you are DESIGNED to FAIL missions. there are missions in game where you are told outright you wont win, ok whatever, but then you get reprimanded in game for losing? And if you beat your head against the wall and do win the mission by some miracle, your reward is a follow up mission 5x harder with no resources to fix your ships, with NO REWARD, and then youre reprimanded for failing THAT one. For some historical battles (american) it makes sense, but the british route forced failures are aggravating. THE most aggravating part, however, is when you are inevitably forced to restart a mission, you get to watch your ships take 10 minutes to get to the fight all over again because even at triple speed the game is unbearably slow. God forbid you lose a mast because I have literally been able to track my ship sailing sideways to the wind with only the foremast destroyed using a ruler for about one ship length per in game hour. The game is fun, and i wish i didnt have so many negative things to say about it. It just feels like it was put together and play tested a couple times, and the devs said "meh good enough". or when they felt a mission wasnt hard enough they artificially upped the difficulty by changing enemy stats to impossible levels for the in game ships. Contrary to most other reviews, however, I actually like the land battles. Its clearly not the first focus of the game and you will be able to tell during them, but they still manage to be fun. TL;DR: the game is fun but frustrating because there will be problems outside of your control, that are clearly due to poor design.
