Grendizer is the first anime I've ever watched, around the end of the 70ies (in my native French). I've got the DVDs, the mangas and the Kana comic by Dorison/Bajram/Cossu/Sentenac/Guillo (name: Goldorak). I've hesitated buying this game for a long time but a friend who got it told be it was a lot of fun. He was so sure I would love it, he offered to give me the money for it (16 EUR, during the sales). That was enough to convince me so I declined and I bought it immediately. I'm glad I did. The musics, the design, the story, the spirit of the thing ... I got goosebumps. I've played for six hours straight and I've loved every minute of it. (I've spent the day humming various songs of the show.) I explore everything fully and I expect my way requires a total of about ten hours to reach the end of the game. Rushers may do it in about seven hours. The fights are relatively easy but I find them satisfying: dodge, counter, attack using Grendizer's various weapons. As easy as it is, less that 8 percent players manage to win against the first boss. (You get one chance to do it as you are meant to flee in the end) There are also shoot-them-up sections, both with the Spazer and small yellow ship of Koji Kabuto/Lance Hyatt/Alcor. Among the achievements, one requires you to die: I've yet to get it. I've read many complains about the technical state of the game. I'm playing with a gamepad on a "small" 7600X / RX6650XT / 32GB / SSD and loading times are under 5 seconds and I've seldom noticed anything bad worth mentioning. Note that I'm playing on Proton/Linux. If your are a gamer with any kind of love for the original material (a.k.a: a fan), this game is for you. Get it on a sale if you value the price/hours ratio but get it.

Got this game thru Steam's digital store when it was on sale just late April of this year. I grew up watching Super Robot animes during the late 1970's thru early 1980's. Being from Philippines, I became a fan of "Mazinger Z" & "Voltes V(five)" when I was just 4 or 5 years old. Before coming to the States, my parents & I moved to the Middle East (Saudi Arabia) during the early 80's thru early 90's. This was when I first heard of "Grendizer" watching its episodes. Even though I didn't understand Arabic (wished they had put english subtitles), I still enjoyed watching the action and fighting sequences of "Grendizer". It's good to know that I later found out that "Mazinger Z", & "Grendizer" were both Go Nagai's creations. Anyways, going back to this game. I didn't have any high expectations for this game. This may not be on par with AAA games. But it really surprised me. The story IMO was very good. The gameplay was great, though there were some minor glitches which can be fixed by the devs., it may bother some, but to me is not a big deal. Some of the boss fights IMO were challenging but not too hard. You just have to learn the timing and patterns for each boss. I like that you can upgrade your skills and weapons especially the "Space Thunder". I also like the cel-shaded graphics kind of 70's, 80's, & 90's retro. The music and sound effects were great especially Grendizer's theme song. My one & only gripe is that this game is short even though we got extra DLC (Deluxe upgrade bonus mission). To me it's not a deal breaker. Man, can't wait for a sequel (Grendizer II), if only they can also make a stand alone game for "Mazinger Z" or even "Voltes V(five)". Overall, I would recommend this game to fans of Super Robots & Mechs from the late 70's, 80's, 90's & Beyond! :) Story= 4.5/5 Stars; Gameplay= 5/5 Stars; Graphics= 5/5 Stars; Music/SFX= 5/5 Stars; Replay= 4/5 Stars; Overall= 5/5 Stars

If you like Grendizer, then you definitely should play this game. If not, then don't play it. The game is really easy though, I think it needs a hard mode. However, it is really fun and I liked the art style of the game. The soundtrack brings back memories. I hope if we get a Mazinger game in the future with a similar gameplay style.

I’ve "only" been waiting 40+ years to finally be able to play my youth hero: Goldorak! So, telling you this review may be a little biased would be an understatement. :) For the other long-time fans out there: Every little things you expect are in here, and this game will push all your right ‘buttons’ while you press Goldorak’s ones! As a starter, on top of The Grendizer himself, we can play Actarus (the Duke), we can pilot the Spaizer, and even Alcor’s OVT. Plus as an added perk, we can not only play in many languages of our choice, but also with the accurate voices we used to hear during the original series! All Goldorak’s many super-powers and gadgets are also there for us to use. The game smartly gives us some time to get used to them and to transition from being a potato-couch watching the show on TV in our childhood, to now becoming a full-scale pilot and hero of the galaxy. As such, each super-powers become available one-by-one as the game progresses, and so do the villains of Vega, who are also all there! This may be why many reviews, probably from younger gamers who may be less familiar or addicted to the TV series, say that this is just a pretty basic action game. But if you play it just a bit longer and unlock all the weapons and abilities available, you will then discover and better enjoy the magnificent power of this legendary robot and, who knows,...maybe become a little addicted too! ;) But for me it’s a no-brainer. This gem is way more than a game: It’s a collectible! Grendizer (Goldorak) Fans: GO!!!!!

I have to say, this game is composed of some great highs, and pretty bad lows as far as gameplay experience is concerned. I'm not exactly a Grendizer fan, but I am a fan of super robot anime in general, and my exposure to UFO Robo Grendizer itself was mostly limited to what I got from SRW A Portable. Let's start with the highs, the music has failed to become old for me, and have not really had any audio failures aside from a couple, but they stem from a low that I'll talk about latter. Combat isn't the most complicated thing, and honestly, I feel like this game is pretty easy even if you just button mash without knowing much about what you're doing. E.G. I managed to beat a boss that I apparently was not supposed to be able to defeat and got a <10% achievement for it. Still kinda bewildered about why it was so hard for other people to be honest, you've got a very strong health regeneration mechanic, and plenty of time to use it if you keep your eye out. Movement, animations, attacks, almost everything about playing the game on foot just gives you this amazing powertrippy feeling of piloting a big, stompy, yet agile anime robot. I've actually enjoyed some of the time I spent looking for collectibles in the open-world-ish stages because of the feedback I get from jumping and sprinting. When you know what you are doing, even the harder mooks can be dealt with pretty easily, which I can't help but feel like also contributes to the feeling of being the protagonist of a super robot anime pretty well too. New enemies give you trouble, but once you know everyone's gimmicks, they're lambs for the slaughter. Now I'll talk about the lows. The main, glaring issue I have found I have found with this game is that it has huge requirements for my GPU, for seemingly no reason. I've got a 2023 ROG Zephrus M16 and I've set the graphics to the minimum possible settings to play this game. With these settings, the game feels like it's using 14 GB of ram, and the GPU is struggling so hard that the game isn't exactly working as intended. The load times everywhere I go take multiple minutes, and are so long to the point that I read light novels on my phone to fill in the time. Worse, the game will semi-randomly freeze at any conceivable moment from within combat, to simply running around the field, just sort of leaving you and whatever tension you may be feeling at that moment hanging. Very uncomfortable feeling. I can't help but feel like I've spent a quarter of my playtime just waiting for the game to properly spin up. you get worse audio/loading issues if you tab out, so I wouldn't reccomend it. Should the game feel like delivering more than one audio line in a row during the time you tab out, when you tab in, they all end up playing at once. This game isn't particularly hard, especially if you are used to faster fighting games, so don't expect difficulty from the game unless you set your own challenges on what you should do. Even the minigames are very forgiving to you, right up to their final iteration. A final note about the overall game is the spotty amount of polish this game has. There are some really awesome moments, like the cut-scenes that play whenever you finish a boss, and many animations do feel really great, even when I had set my graphics to potato. There are also some pretty terrible moments, like during the first time you enter the spazer, I swear I heard placeholder dialogue that may as well have been played by an AI or something like that, and it sounded terrible. Absolutely ruined that moment for me. Worse, that's not the only scene that has that terrible dialogue, though I can't remember them off the top of my head. The game itself isn't particularly long, at this point I've pretty much 100%ed the game, and that's not something I usually do to games. It's difficult to tell if this is because there's not enough content in this game for 100% or I've been enjoying the content so much that I was actually willing to 100% the game. All in all, i would mostly recommend this game if you are a fan of giant robots and you have a very strong computer. It's not long, it's not the best and most polished, but some aspects of this game are too amazing to ignore. I really wish the game ran better and had better dubbing so I could reccomend it more. Shouting the names of your attacks in a super robot really needs that wonderful anime ham that you can only get from japanese dubbing. That being said, if you don't have a strong computer, or are completely unfamilar with the genre of the game and worse, the anime itself, I can't say the purchase would be worth it for you.
