Years and years ago, I owned a disc copy of Crimes Of War. Expecting it to be an unbearably bad game that I'd just throw on for a bit and have a laugh, I was surprised to find it was actually way more fun than it had any right to be. Fast-forward to 2025, and reminiscing about this old game I come to find that not only is listed it on Steam under a different name (ie. its original one), but so is a prequel I had no idea existed. I gave the first UberSoldier a go before revisiting this one, and it honestly didn't fill me with confidence. It was so rough, I wondered what I'd signed myself up for and whether UberSoldier II would actually hold up. But after launching into the first cheesy and over-the-top chase sequence mission, I knew I was in for a good time. It wasn't just rose-tinted glasses - this game is definitely terrible, but it's also incredible . Playing the first game before revisiting the second actually gave me a pretty good perspective when coming back into it. The guns largely still feel pretty good to shoot (at least for a janky, budget 2000's shooter) but this time around the gunplay is all-around more satisfying since enemy AI no longer moves around erratically and unpredictably, where this originally kinda made them chore to deal with. They're still braindead, but it most often turns the game into something of a power-fantasy shooting gallery rather than ruining anything. The overall maps & environments in this game are also much-improved over the original. Whilst lacking a compass or objective markers means it can sometimes be confusing as to where you should be going, the level design is a bit more engaging and lightly puzzle-oriented. And combined with a much more cohesive visual style, with both a better art quality and a sense of atmosphere, they're actually interesting to traverse. I do have some complaints, besides just the general overall jank of the thing. Much like the original, there's no FOV setting - there's supposedly a DLL hex edit you can make, but I couldn't seem to get it working and just had to make do with slightly nausea-inducing tunnel vision. I also found that the game's XP progression & skills/abilities were at odds with each other - seeing as using the shield, sniper or berserker modes don't grant any XP, it rarely made sense to use them if it could be helped since it was sub-optimal to character progression. UberSoldier II is a gloriously stupid, globetrotting Nazi-shooting romp that is objectively a pretty bad game by all accounts, but doesn't stop that getting in the way of a good time. I haven't even mentioned the terrible script or voice acting, the mostly comic book cutscenes (but sometimes rendered ones), or the totally banging but totally out-of-place soundtrack. This game is a beautiful mess, and well worth checking out if you're a fan of jank OR classic shooters. ★★★✰✰

[H3]Game for those who enjoy first-person shooters with a twist of history and the supernatural. The mix of brutal combat, dark atmosphere, and deep narrative makes it a thrilling and unique experience. The game successfully combines the grim realities of World War II with occult mystery, allowing players to immerse themselves in a version of history where magic, myth, and science converge. If you're looking for a historical shooter that offers something fresh — a blend of warfare, strategy, and supernatural intrigue — "The Fall of Annenrbe" will deliver a captivating and chilling experience. Whether you’re a fan of WWII games or simply enjoy stories of hidden occult powers, this game promises to keep you on the edge of your seat.

UberSoldier II was a game I wanted to play, especially after finishing the first game back in April 2024; well, actually, before that. I wanted to play it during my First Person Shooter binge, but held off until I played the first game. Going into the game, I knew I could not compare it with the likes of the original Medal of Honor or Call of Duty games, and it was a good thing I didn't. Did it have its flaws and quirks? Oh yes. But it was still an enjoyable experience. UberSoldier II was simply a game that anyone could pick up and enjoy, despite its quirks. It does help going into it, however, not expecting it to be on equal footing as some of the bigger and better WW2 FPS games out there. The story, just like in UberSoldier, is nothing too spectacular. In fact, though I tend to pride myself in remembering details in stories, movies, and games, UberSoldier was so forgettable that I struggled to remember anything pertinent to it. The same could be said about the sequel. If anything, what stood out to me more were the slight inconsistencies. For instance, in one cutscene, where you are interrogating a German Officer, during far shots, he would have his officer's hat on. But the moment the scene zoomed in, that hat was gone. Even the tone in the cutscenes sometimes shifted abruptly. For example, at one moment, one of the characters is mourning the loss of her brother, and straight after that, she is laughing with the main character, midway through asking him a question. I was there scratching my head, asking myself if I missed something or if there was an inside joke I was not privy to. Still, it was fun to play, and there were some improvements to its predecessor. For one, the levelling-up system was better. In the first game, depending on what you did (three melee kills or three headshots), you would level up your health or energy. In this game, however, getting the three melee kills or headshots would grant you XP to be used at the end of the level on stats such as Health, Accuracy, Energy, etc. Not only that, a fourth consecutive kill would unlock a temporary ability - Supersniper or Berserker - so it was worth going for them. One thing which however they did not change between the first game and this was the voice acting. It wasn't bad, per se, but it was laughably noticeable. German soldiers, while they were out in the level map, would often throw out a German phrase here or there. But the moment they needed to give some exposition dialogue, they were very noticeably English-speaking. There were times, particularly when there were allies on the map, where I couldn't tell if it was the Germans or my guys talking. Still, just like in the first game, it added to the charm. The game isn't all bad, and if someone wants a mindless shooter, I would recommend it to anyone. It's cheap, and it really doesn't need a strong PC to run it. And it doesn't need any external patches either. What I would say, though, is to play the first game beforehand, also found on Steam now, as the second game makes a lot of references to characters from that game. And because I found the story forgettable, there were times I was thinking: 'Who are you again?' So yeah, pick it up if you want a quick shooter, but don't go expecting something that would rival Call of Duty or Medal of Honor, and you should be fine. Also, don't be surprised if, after beating the game, the main menu title changes from UberSoldier II to Crimes of War. While random, it was the other name the game went by. I just don't understand why they had to change the title screen at the end of the game. For full review: https://www.thealphabeticalgamer.com/post/u-is-for-ubersolider-2

A good run-n-gun old school fps with some moments of beautiful level design and eerie, liminal atmosphere reminiscent of Half Life 2. Sadly, Ubersoldier 2 isn't as good as the first one overall - despite having a few levels that I found atmospheric, overall there is less interesting stuff in this game. Ubersoldier 1 stood out with a surprising number of set pieces and some gameplay variety, but the sequel leans more heavily into straightforward "get from A to B" missions. Seems like the budget, enthusiasm (or both) had decreased in this title with an overall less memorable and creative end result. It's still worth a run through if you like retro shooters (also don't expect anything from the plot or acting) - but I won't be replaying this one.

The sequel to the first game is more of the same - mindless mayhem. Not many changes here, the graphics are practically the same, the characters are the same, most of the arsenal at the player's disposal is the same, the plot... what plot? :) One of the few changes is the improvement of skills - after every 3 headshots/knife kills we receive XP, which we can use to upgrade them after the mission. Apart from that, there is no point in dwelling on it here - while the first game had some potential, the creators clearly went the way of a budget shooter when creating the sequel. It is fun to play such a game from time to time, but nothing more. Like the previous game, I recommend this one purely for killing time.
