Feb. 2025
I tried to play Demon's Souls back in the day because I was incredibly drawn to the gritty setting and action combat. I dropped it VERY soon into playing it, cried uncle, and swore off FromSoftware. Some years later when I endured a months-long recovery after a partially failed surgery, one of the things that brought me great relief was having a friend come over and play Dark Souls while I watched curled up in the fetal position on the couch. I just never stopped being drawn to these games even though I am pitiful at playing them and have still not picked one up since that initial experience. I am impatient and greedy so I fail and become angry and frustrated before having any kind of fun. I saw Splattercat reviewing Tyrant's Realm and couldn't resist the price and throwback vibes. Right away I began having the same experience as I had with Demon's Souls but this time I stuck with it and tried to CALM DOWN. I am still within a sliver of health of beating the final boss but I am so so happy to say that it has completely brought me back around to seeing a new way to approach these kinds of games. Yes - this game is a souls-like for toddlers, I mean, comparatively speaking and all respect. I imagine a skilled player could easily sweep through the entire game within a couple hours. There are a handful of stages (like, seven?) with a boss at the end. You go through the main chunk of each stage fighting lower-level enemies, picking up health bar bumps and different gear, and then resting / spending gold for meta-progression / refilling health flasks at the Merchant's Tavern, then going into the boss fight. It is extremely generous. It is a very small project by a very small team and it is clearly a middle school love letter to FromSoftware and a bygone era of low-res PS1 graphics. No, there is not a huge variety of anything here. But what it does, it does well. The controls are responsive, the weapons feel different and require adjustments to play style, and it is incredibly satisfying to pull off a perfect roll or parry. It's been wonderful and I am truly smitten with it as a title that has given me the cajones to once again try a souls game. This plays great on Steam Deck and I've only run into one issue where I was using my xbox controller, then put the Deck into sleep mode, and when I started it back up NOT using the xbox controller, the game would not respond to any inputs. I closed it and reopened it with still no response. I had to restart the Steam Deck entirely and only then would it respond. I was worried I would lose my progress but it saved almost right where I left off so no big deal. Coincidentally, the entire Dark Souls series is on sale so I picked up the first one ready to jump in when I get an honest win in Tyrant's Realm. I feel super satisfied about my progress, however slow, however clumsy, and would like to thank Team Tyrant for what they've done here. Very fun! 4 out of 5 for me.

Very fun game. I hope this becomes a genre where we just get roguelike souls style games. Yea I could use the randomizer mod on a Souls game but I feel like there's a market for this type of game and I hope to see more like it.

For those wondering the game runs great on the Steamdeck, and it’s fun as hell. The late 90’s visuals are perfect and the performance/feel of the game is really good and responsive. The parry system feels fair and the music especially the hub area with the merchant slaps. Can’t wait for the future updates etc.

I enjoyed the core of this game quite a bit. While I feel it needs some tweaking here and there it is a well executed game. In general, I would absolutely recommend this game for people that enjoy action combat. PROS -Great atmosphere with a lot of minor details - Nice addition of some extra game options to tailor the visual experience - Overall combat is engaging and so far seems to be fair with its challenges - Great visual design and nice enemy variety - Gear variety is great - Love the Gatorade cooler style method of refilling the healing flask. CONS - Parrying in this game has a very very short window and overall feels awkward. I'd argue this method of a parry mechanic in general is just not a positive design choice in any game that's used it. - The slow-mo when rolling from an attack makes the combat flow feel awkward - Having to spend every cent at the merchant before progressing feels quite bizarre of a design choice and pigeon holes the player a bit. Maybe have some sort of trade off for carrying a bunch of gold. Like punish me for my greed or something. Nitpicks/Minor suggestions - Give me an option to remove the HUD display for the controls on the right-hand side. - When switching gear the stat text on the new item will be green even when the stat is the same. It'd be cool if it was yellow just to give a bit more of the color communication to indicate it is an equal trade in the stat. Super minor nitpick though. - The CRT filter makes the screen quite blue which diminishes the gritty feel of the graphics. CRTs do not make the screen blue, still I'd like to praise the developer for its addition. Maybe just a slight reduction in the blue would help. - Please let me be able to sprint while locked on. Not being able to feels quite clunky and reminds me of my Dark Souls 2 woes. - Not sure if intentional but I can change the direction of my roll mid-roll. This can have the effect of accidentally removing any distance gained from rolling. - Stealth would also be neato and diversify gameplay. - This could benefit from some sort of poise/stance system. Lets the player utilize aggression if they are aware of the enemies weaknesses. And also gives armor a stronger presence than just having passive defensive additions.
