You get to shoot dinosaurs, and then, when it starts to get a little repetitive, the dinosaurs start to shoot back. And just like that, no one questioned whether video games were art ever again. A solid shooter in the same vein as Quake with a little bit of annoying platforming, which was the style at the time. a good variety of weapons, it's a fun classic romp. It doesn't look great, but the slightly remastered graphics are passable. All in all, you'll get 5-8 hours of decent FPS fun.

I have to say, I absolutely freaking love Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. This classic first-person shooter from the late '90s has truly stood the test of time and remains one of my all-time favorite games. The premise of the game is simple yet insanely exciting: you play as Turok, a time-traveling warrior tasked with stopping the evil Campaigner from conquering the world using an army of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. With a massive arsenal of weapons at your disposal, you traverse through lush jungles, treacherous caves, and ancient ruins, battling hordes of deadly dinosaurs and other enemies. One of the things that makes Turok so great is its fast-paced, intense gameplay. The levels are designed with a perfect balance of exploration and combat, giving you plenty of opportunities to take in the stunning environments while also keeping you on your toes with constant action. The weapon selection is also top-notch, with everything from a trusty bow and arrow to explosive rocket launchers and flamethrowers at your disposal. But what really sets Turok apart from other first-person shooters of its time is its focus on exploration and puzzle-solving. Each level is filled with hidden secrets and collectibles, encouraging you to explore every nook and cranny of the game world. And the puzzles, while not overly complex, provide a nice break from the constant action and require you to use your brains as well as your brawn. The graphics, while certainly showing their age, still hold up surprisingly well. The lush jungles and prehistoric environments are beautifully rendered, and the dinosaurs and other enemies are incredibly detailed and realistic. The sound design is also top-notch, with satisfying weapon sounds and a haunting, atmospheric soundtrack that perfectly complements the game's primal setting. Overall, I can't recommend Turok: Dinosaur Hunter enough. Whether you're a fan of classic first-person shooters, dinosaurs, or just fun, action-packed games, Turok has something for everyone. It's a true gem of the genre and a game that I will continue to come back to again and again.

I got this on N64 back in 1997. It was a biblical moment. I actually felt like I was exploring jungles, forests, valleys, ancient catacombs and tree villages. This was before 3D shooters were common. Years later they remastered this classic and it still holds up to this day. Tons of secrets to find, enemies to blast away and some awesome music that fits the atmosphere of each stage. The graphics are smooth and look better than a lot of 1997 era 3D games. The death animations were also way ahead of their time and are actually more gruesome than most modern FPS games. Unlike modern shooters though, it is immersive. The levels can be maze like and confusing, but that was how FPS games were made back then. When you beat a stage, you actually felt like you achieved success. Pick this classic up and make sure to pick up its two sequels as well.

A quality game from a quality year for gaming: 1997. The original Turok hails from a time when video games were incomprehensibly innovative. It is therefore equally mind-blowing how rock-solid the foundation of this game is, and how polished it is. Everything from the smallest pick-up sound to the largest enemy design is 10/10. Calling it an FPS does the game a disservice, as it mixes in platforming, resource collection/management, and light puzzles in a way modern boomer shooters like the Doom reboots can only dream of, while somehow still being faster than them. In my opinion, this is as good as video games ever got. A legendary piece of entertainment that will stand the test of time for years if not decades to come. So, if you're looking for an antidote to the deluge of trash that our metaphorical storefronts are washing up, you've come to the right place. Play it in 4K with saturation disabled.
