I've been diving into Tribes of Midgard, and I have to say, it's a bit of a mixed bag. At first glance, the marketing seems to mislead players into thinking it’s a typical action-survival RPG, but it’s actually a rogue-lite experience with intriguing RPG elements. The core loop revolves around gathering resources, crafting gear, and defending your base from relentless monster attacks. If you can’t keep up, it’s game over, and that adds a thrilling urgency to every run. What’s fascinating is that there are essentially two distinct gameplay modes: one is similar to Terraria, where you can build and explore without nightly invasions, and the other is a chaotic onslaught against your village. While playing solo can feel isolating and overwhelming, the game truly shines in multiplayer. Teaming up with friends or even random players lets you strategize roles, whether it’s reinforcing defenses, hunting down massive Jotunns, or gathering rare materials. However, be warned: if you’re looking for a robust solo experience, you might find it lacking. And let’s not forget the infamous “Abandon World” button—seriously, who thought that was a good idea? It’s far too easy to accidentally delete your character, which is just a recipe for frustration. Despite its flaws, I find myself constantly coming back for more, especially since many of the previous complaints have been addressed in updates. If you have friends to play with, this game can be a blast. Just remember to manage your expectations and focus on the cooperative aspects for the best experience!

Fun little game and I would recommend it at the $5.99 sale price. Progressing your character and building is not terrible. The game 100% feels like a mobile game on PC. Oddly enough you can only rotate your camera when in the build menu? One of the most bizarre things I've ever seen in a game.

Good times if you like Vikings, or Norse mythos. 7/10 The game has a learning curve, and it definitely feels like you're in UI hell for a while until you get used to everything. Be prepared to play a few times before you understand the fundamentals. I'd skip this game if you are solo, it's much more fun with others.

A gem in the rough. I like the survival mode gameplay and mechanics and there is so much potential in this game, although I have several points to criticize: - reduce grind: e.g. farming stone is tedious. There are so many boulders and rocks everywhere, but you can only mine rock at these small stone deposits. I don't want to run around mining so much rock... The crafting system needs some more balancing! Maybe even create hot spots for some resources, e.g. a large accumulation of rocks where one could place a portal shrine to quickly travel to for some quick mining, or a larger school of fish. You get the idea: something that is worth revisiting for specific resources. - better balancing concerning combat difficulty: beating the first Jötunn was tough, beating the second one was easier, and after that I had zero problems surviving which kinda made fighting pointless except for the grind. Having to fight a bit more strategically to beat strong enemies or hordes would make it way more interesting. Currently I only have to spam two buttons to win. - remove "pay to win": I understand the appeal behind an in-game shop, and I support it -- if its only purpose is to support the devs via cosmetics, skins and so on. But here is a classic example of useful items (e.g. a fire-resistant armor) that is locked in a shop that you have to use a shop currency for -- which you can only get via excessive grinding or via spending real money. Unlock the useful stuff and put only cosmetics in the in-game shop, please! - I can buy maps for locations that do not exist. E.g. I've been searching for another lair, so I bought a lair map from a sorcerer, but no new lair location appeared on my map. After that I learned that I already found all possible locations, which means that I uselessly spent my souls for nothing. There should be an internal limiter/indicator that prevents (or at least warns) dumb players like me from doing that. - roaming around the world is sometimes extremely tedious and frustrating because of walls/cliffs. A possibility to climb walls or build stairs or ladders would be such a relief. - the inventory menu is finicky. For example, unequipping or equipping runes always puts the "cursor" (playing with gamepad, so I'm talking about the currently selected item) back to the beginning of the list, or sometimes even to a random place. And if I have five runes that are at the end of the list and should be all unequipped, that means a lot of cursor movement... What I like: the Jötunns also level up with every time you beat them, providing an end-game activity. The combat is straightforward. I also like the art style, and the maps looks nice. Worlds could be a bit bigger, but it's not overwhelmingly large, so that's fine.

TL;DR: A fun game for casual gamers that dont want to spend much time or dollar on games like Valheim and / or only plan on playing this as a group of friends. We bought this game with a group of 6 people for our annual LAN. We were specifically looking for cheap, easy to learn, coop/ PVE style games. We really enjoyed the Genre of RPG Tower Defense (like Dungeon Defenders or the good old WC3 mods), so we went for Tribes and Midgard - and got exactly what we were looking for. This game does not require any skill whatsoever. You'll learn what your class can do, which weapon to use and strengths & weaknesses of the bosses during your first run. And without looking up strategies online, you'll need like 3-4 runs before figuring out how to beat the first boss easily (if you are an experienced group, maybe earlier). After that, the game lacks another level of challenge, as the other bosses are quite similar once you know what to do in Midgard. Positive: - easy accessible: this game is cheap (in sale!) and you can play it on any kind of computer, so even your reallife friends with their office laptops will be able to join your party. - easy to learn: no depth means you'll learn this game in no time and even the noobiest reallife mate will be able to have fun and feel like he is contributing to beating the game. - fun game mode: it's the classic "gather a group of friends and beat the evil boss while hordes of monsters try to destroy your base" type of game and those just always work. - classic theme: while going with the frequently used theme of nordic mythology isn't that creative, it is still fun to choose your favorite class, craft medival weapons and beat up monsters Negative: - as mentioned, this game has no depth. Once you know how to reach and beat the bosses, you'll never have a hard time doing so again. Also, lots of stuff added to the game (items, food, many weapons) are not at all necessary to win. - few updates: we played the game in March/ April and recently looked what's changed til then - not one single update in almost a year. -graphics, gameplay, UI... this game feels more like a mobile game than a title you'd be willing to pay 20€ for. Do I recommend it? Not to everyone. If you wanna dive deep into a world, if you are looking for solo player action, if you have an expensive rig you wanna use to the limit or if you wanna challenge yourself - this game is not for you. But if you have a group of friends that is not necessarily great at videogames, but wants to spend an hour or five having fun with friends while during holiday season, you will not regret spending 6-7€ for a game like this.
