Introduction Triangle Strategy is a turn-based RPG game where the player will encounter a wide array of characters to recruit and field in dynamic battles. The game has a compelling story shaped by the decisions taken and features heavy character development and plot twists that are done correctly. If you know of Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics, you will be right at home despite some of the differences such as no counterattacks or roles being more diverse. The Stage of Triangle Strategy The story of Triangle Strategy puts the player in the role of Serenoa Wolffort, a young man who due to circumstances becomes the head of his house in the land of Norzelia. There are a lot of gray themes and decisions to be made, and one can often find themselves allying with an enemy or doing questionable things to thrive in the land of salt. As a player, you carry the consequences of your choices and must decide which path is more appropriate for your house, creating an interesting narrative experience. Do you favor effective but cruel tactics, or do you sacrifice the advantage to align with your moral compass? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3381986959 Triangle Strategy's story dwells on slavery, betrayal, hard choices, and manipulation. The first few chapters had me bored out of my mind, but once I got around chapters 6-7 a few hours in I found myself hooked as the story picked up. The land of Norzelia is a place where the strong rule over the weak, and those beneath need to obey if they wish to survive. Every faction has its agenda and navigating the political field of the different houses is not only engaging but also compelling. As the player plays the different routes, they find each path reveals secrets and lore about the land itself. Thrilling Combat That Uses The Environment The combat of Triangle Strategy is similar to a tactics game but also includes its flavor. The most important aspect is the environment itself, archers deal more damage when they are in higher places or from a distance, and terrain can become frozen, wet, or burn due to magic, affecting units and even influencing hit rates. It creates a compelling challenge where when playing with higher difficulties every little detail needs to be taken into account. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3381987439 The game also uses skill points that are spent to use abilities and regenerate slowly, and depending on what units you field on the battlefield you can have synergies. For example, Benedict can give Serenoa a double turn, while Julio can give Benedict his skills points back, enabling Serenoa to get another double turn or act instantly again skipping everyone's turn. Three characters out of the thirty already show the potential for strategy and synergies greatly. The level design is also fantastic, with multiple conditionals or intricated design, although few levels are reused or can have a simplistic layout, the majority shine as excellent and well-balanced. Conviction And The Branching Paths The Scales of Conviction is a voting system that many players didn't like back in the day, it felt like it took responsibility from Serenoa and freedom of choice from the player. However, what appears as a restrictive system can have some flexibility to it. Anna is your wildcard which you can influence to alter votes (alongside other characters depending on your convictions) and sometimes dialogue choices can work if you lack the necessary requisite as convictions divide between freedom, utility, and Morality. That being said, in true Japanese fashion, the developers of Triangle Strategy love to keep their best paths to new game plus, as getting the Golden Route in a first playthrough can be vexing both in votes and its gameplay with high lv enemies and harsh levels. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3381988671 The game has different endings and routes, each featuring its tone and changing the course of the story. I went with the Benedict route and had an amazing time with its plot twist that I couldn't see coming and gray themes of incredibly harsh decisions. The voice acting is fantastic and sells the story exceedingly well in the English dub, and although Serenoa's voice actor wanes, it also thrives in other scenes. I found Serenoa VA to be decently tolerated, as Triangle Strategy is a grounded story, it fits well into the role to have a more stoic character at times. Strong and Weak Points The best part of Triangle Strategy is not only its story and combat but also the soundtrack. The music in the game carries the scenes and themes. Resolute Heart, with its heavy tones and melancholy notes, can be impactful during big moments. Others, such as Crimson Might or Combat March, make battles have a tone of fantasy and serious stakes in the former, while the latter provides a more hopeful take on it. For all the praises I am singing to the game, it is not without its flaws. Unless playing on easier difficulties, grinding is a must in mock battles and it can be extremely tedious at times. As stated before, the first few hours can be a bit lacking and it can be frustrating when one wants to take a route, only for the game to tell you "No, I think you want this route instead" and force you to either take another path or you guest it, grind conviction. In addition, characters join you based on conviction (except the mandatory cast) which can create fear of missing out and the necessity of using a guide. Conclusion Triangle Strategy is an amazing strategy game that despite its flaws, manages to convey a story full of twists, tragedies, and the grayness of the world. I liked the tactical use of the environment being on the forefront, and its characters, factions, and world are full of life and passion with a colorful cast using Red, Blue, and Green as primary colors. Being able to become part of a faction to betray them later leaves a lot of choices on the table. It gives a good diversity in the storytelling experience in my opinion. Despite some gripes, I recommend playing the game blindly with no guides on the first playthrough and enjoying the ride on the land of Norzelia. 9/10 AMAZING [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/43679955/] If you enjoyed the review, please follow my curator! This is Shining Force 4 if Shining Force 4 actually existed and was made by people with a severe case of graphomania. Gameplay-wise it's a decent tactical JRPG, again, reallly Shining Force-esque, can't stress that enough, as it was what kept me going, for I love Camelot's creation a lot. Story-wise though... I mean, it's okay on paper, like if you start blueprinting your story in a way like "character A goes to location B, there he meets character C and persuades him to march together to location D to save the queen E, but during that time character F conspires with characters G to M to <do something>", from this viewpoint it's an okay story, seen worse. If you zoom in on the story and actually read and listen the stuff the characters say, it's a boring uninspired neverending slop of blandness. Graphics... well, they exist. I'm almost certain that the game reuses at least half of the assets from Octopath Traveler. I mean, it's still a Square Enix game, so they have every right to do that, but damn, with a price tag of 60 euros you'd expect a little bit effort. Still, the game manages to look pretty enough, so there's that. Just nothing to write home about. Music is okayish, there is a couple of gems here and there, but overall not really memorable. Voiceacting is meh, seen worse, but not a lot. Now, the controls... the controls for this game hold a very special place in my heart, one that was previously held by From Software's games, because here they are even worse. I'm about 93% sure that this game was coded using gamepads only, as no sane creature that has ever seen a keyboard in their life can come up with such disastrously bad control scheme. And anyway, with all that, I'd still cautiously recommend buying this one. At a heavy discount, naturally, but it might be worth a shot. It's not really horrible, simply deeply flawed. There is actually a good game out there under all the negatives. Battle system is fine, storyline is heavily branched, which is never not a good thing, the encounters are well-balanced and always have some gimmick that makes them special, so, yeah, there. Put the story on autoplay or skip it entirely and you're looking at a decent title.

phenomenal game, leaving a review because the game deserves a better review aggregate than it has the only real detriment is that the game is pretty narrative heavy, especially in the beginning. but while some people may find that to be a negative, for me and others a little slog in the beginning is worth it for what is overall an excellent plot with great characters, and an interesting philosophical conflict. The narrative accomplishes a lot while keeping events and characters very distinct and easily recognizable. the music and art are best in class the combat is excellent, with a large cast of distinct characters with interesting upgrade trees and other progression systems. Lots of distinct combat scenarios and objectives that incentivize you using different character combinations and strategies. 3 distinct main story paths each with sub paths, as well as a hidden 4th 'true' path.

Man, this game could have been a masterpiece. How did it fail so harshly in such critical aspects? I would consider this a stage play first and an SRPG second. This game has easily the worst pacing of any game I've ever played. You will regularly go for 45-60 minute stretches just watching cut scene after cut scene. Then once the cut scenes are finished, time to go "explore" (talk to everyone in town). Then more cut scenes, THEN maybe a battle. The bright side is that the story(ies) in Triangle Strategy are some of the best you will ever experience. A captivating, well-written plot that's easy to digest and keep track of. Nothing gets too far off the reservation. Very few pieces you'd consider cliche. The influence from Game of Thrones is palpable. The choice and consequence is truly difficult to decide on with how much gravitas the choices make. You are almost always tossing someone to the dogs in order to save another. The constant betrayals, playing off the back foot, and absence of a truly moral decision can be exhausting though. This is not a feel good video game. But, even this age-old system is flawed in Triangle Strategy. What's the point of choice and consequence when regardless of what *I* want to do, some NPCs can usurp me and pick a different direction than me? Why tell me my convictions are strengthened every few minutes when i still can't convince them shit? Think about it, it should be as simple as "Which path will you take?," and instead it's here's a break from the five cut scenes you just sat through, go talk to everyone in town to get evidence on that you'll then have to recite to the party members in an attempt to convince them to select the path you (the player) want. You will fail. Poor design isn't replayability, poor design is *expecting* you to replay the game. You don't have conviction levels high enough to pick certain paths your first time through. Because of this, they actually force you certain ways in decision making during your first playthrough, furthering an already flawed system under the guise of choice. The combat and battle customization are puddle deep. There is no weapons or armor, no classes, and barely any skill variation. The tactics you use at the first battle will be nearly identical to the last. You can tell the "budget" put story first and everything essential to a good RPG dead last. The upgrade system is unbelievably convoluted. Like, who-thought-this-was-a-good-idea-and-fire-them bad. No such simple resource like job points you can use to get upgrades, you instead need a silly amount of materials from an ever growing list of resources and also a ton of currency. Every time you upgrade one piece, the others all get more expensive too. It just makes so little sense I'm getting pissed writing this. It *could* have made sense, but no... they needed to keep you from fully upgrading to drag you along into another playthrough. Grinding for currency and mats doesn't even make sense. I would do the highest level mock battle I could at the time and come away with scraps. There is a huge economic issue where not enough resources are provided or able to be obtained if needed. The OST is soooooo good. Almost every track is an instant classic. Special care was put into each battle theme. Even with copious annoyances, I still kept coming back. Was it for the story? Maybe. Was it to fill the void of being without a a Square Enix SRPG since the DS and PSP era? Absolutely it was.

As a long time Final Fantasy Tactics and strategy RPG enthusiast, this game was exactly what I was looking for. Well done story and character progression. The right amount of grinding, leveling, and customization without being too cumbersome. I enjoy the story, exploration phases, decision making, and battles.
