Yeah, this is a good tactical, card-based roguelike. But there's an underrated feature that bumps this game up even further for me: from icon-click on the desktop to gameplay takes under ten seconds; usually around 4. If you're like me and can't stand long load times to get into games, check this one out.

Every now and then I look back at this game in my library and reminisce a bit. It was honestly a ton of fun while also delivering a gameplay system that is unique among the droves of roguelike card battlers on steam. For every bit the enemy mobs were unfair and overpowered, you equally had potential to find ridiculous combinations and abuse the AI to survive. Possibly not for the most casual of gamers hoping to coast along without worrying about their every action, as your action economy both in battle and overworld travel is vital. All I could possibly ask of this game is for the developers to release a sequel or DLC; but that seems unlikely at this time.

Played on Steam Deck, plays great. I totally love(d) this game and put about 200 hrs. in (played offline, 99% of time). If you are in to roguelite gameplay with tactical turn-based combat in a dark fantasy (post-apocalyptic) world - I highly recommend to give this game a try! Didn't run into any serious issues. The game is very polished. Great UI with all infos right, were you need it (99%). Really satisfying tactical combat - deep, varied, challenging and fun (normal difficulty was just right for me and there is easy and hard difficulty, too)! You lead a party of three chars. Lots of options to customize gameplay in many ways. Graphics, sound, music all very well and functional. Great character and inventory/item arts. And then, there is A LOT of content: 9 character classes that all play differently, with even two different "playstyles" for some of them. Mixing 3 of them up in a party is fun and some combos work out better than others. Different game modes: quest mode, boss rush mode, combats only mode and endless mode. Just don't expect a deep story. There is the world, its lore and a background story with different plots as quests. Nice, it's there. But you will play for the great combat, not for the serviceable story! Opponents are varied and bosses are designed fantastically, all with there individual characteristics and mechanics. A huge amount of cards (aka abilities of your characters) and items. All very well thought out. Probably, I missed out to tell about something. Anyway, enough. Well, the only one thing, that annoyed me, is that whenever you start a fresh run, the game mixes up the party/classes randomly. Instead of keeping your last party composition. Nothing serious, still annoying and I wish there was an option to fix this!

FANTASTIC turn based game. Tons of replay-ability. Interesting stories and side quests. Beautiful graphics for the map and transition into battles. My only complaint is I wish they'd made the characters have bodies instead of flat discs. I'm sure their next game will have that.

I had a great time playing Trials of Fire. My list of Pros and Cons look like this: + The build strategies are varied and unique enough to have gotten my money's worth. + The story was serviceable enough to push me forward and keep me intrigued. + Mixing rogue-lite, card battling, open-world exploration and turn-based strategy SOUNDS like too many cooks are in the kitchen, but here they're all tied together fairly well. I'm reminded of some of the better PC games of the late 90's. - Replayability is lacking even though there is essentially a daily challenge mode to keep people who really enjoy the mechanics engaged. That said, I still got 40+ hours out of the game, so mileage may vary. - The random encounters use a seemingly small pool of options. Pretty quickly you're speed-clicking through narrative or dialogue you've already seen a dozen times or more. All in all, Trials of Fire is absolutely worth picking up if you're jonesing for another card battler rogue lite. I don't think it stands out among the glut of others we've seen since Slay The Spire's pushed the genre forward, but I certainly encourage anyone who's a fan of that game or any other similar titles to try this one. Rating: 7 / 10
