My honest opinion? TSW is actually starting to take shape with the 5th iteration. There's no neutral review option but the game is relaxing and runs well on Steam Deck if you make graphical compromises. This is a weak recommend because the DLC is worth it on sale and Dovetail's business practices have always been known and questionable, but offering it as a free upgrade (I bought TSW4 only for 5 to be released literally the next day) was very much appreciated.

The sim is pretty decent, graphics are really good, and the ideas around the premise of the game is very good. However, something feels missing - I don't feel very immersed into it like I did when it was Train Simulator 2014 or whatever the year was. I feel there needs to be a true career mode, management mode for business tycoons like myself, and more of an open world in a sense. I mean for the USA, there's hardly any routes.... so many states and not many routes at all. I would like to have routes where I can travel through at least 5 states, spend more time driving the trains for freight and passengers. Tutorials are fantastic though, very informative and helpful for newcomers.

Love the game overall, however, the following enduring frustrations apply: 1 The failure to ensure that all electric trains function on all electric routes regardless of country (as they do in train sim classic) 2 The absence of AI traffic in Free Roam mode (again, a failing avoided by TSW classic) 3 An abiding over-reliance on tree-lined rail routes which, I suspect, occurs mainly to obscure the lack of modelling detail in the environment 4 The failure of leaves to fall from trees even in the depths of a British winter. After late November not a single leaf should remain 5 The absence of people (on bridges, balconies, bicycles, in lanes, in fields, on farms, on country paths etc) 6 The absence - on stations - of elderly people, children, pushchairs, wheelchairs, people with bikes, groups of people, people in uniform, people carrying things....) 7 Levitating cars, trucks and even trees. The San Bernardino route is almost unplayable because of the sloppy freeway modelling. Take a lesson from German routes - the cars move perfectly 8 The absence of station names on the HUD oncoming line (again unlike TSW classic). A pity because it makes learning the routes harder and identifying station names a chore. Also place names can be evocative and interesting 9 Termination of game after SPAD should be optional 10 All routes are too short Sorry to be so negative but I love this game and want it to be a more accurate simulation.

Being completely honest if it was not for the West Coast mainline and Avanti 390 train I most probably would not have bought this game! Just that one route made me pre-purchase it! I feel like the game seems to run a lot better! (Maybe this will vary when I do different routes). My main focus is to play the modern UK routes, as I’m not a huge fan of old style pacer trains, or steam trains. It is also virtually impossible to buy every single route or train DLC, firstly do Dovetail I think we are all millionaires? And do they realise how much storage this would also take?? My suggested improvements 1) stop bringing out a brand-new game every year 2) make DLC’s slightly cheaper 3) make certain train stations that are generally busy irl look busier in-game 4) automatic training announcements by default 5) passengers talking between themselves rather than just a silent train 6) Guard Mode: Help wheelchair users, make announcements, be able to see easily distance to the next station 7) I want to see passengers actually get off the train at the end of a service! Too many times you either start a service or take a train to a depot with passengers on which is just lazy from Dovetail and completely unrealistic Apart from the above comments, I am already enjoying this game a lot more than I did when I purchased TSW3 & 4!

I have been driving TSW5 every day since the early access release and my overall experience is quite positive. I have not seen any serious or damaging bugs and/or errors than other what is to be expected from an early access, so just miner stuff that I hope or guess will be fixed on release or down the line. I have had a go on all the new lines and locos and its good, the map hopping function works well too. My save game loaded in without any problems and/or with missing HUD or other screen info, TSW4 loaded a broken save game 8/10 times, so that is a great positive. You can find game play video by searching "tsw5" or "train sim world 5" add gameplay etc. TSW5 routes especially new ones are a bit pricey for my taste but that opinion is not only reserved for TSW, that being said, its a good game and if you enjoy sim games TSW5 is worth it. Go have fun...
