TLDR: Drive trains, that look damn good being driven. I came into TSW thinking I'd hate it but I don't. I read some really bad things online about how TSW is a cash grab and stuff. So far, I am very impressed with it, and TSW 2 at least is very much worth the current price. It's a niche genre and developers and content creators have to get paid too, so I think the price of the game and addons is fair. First thing first, it's not as operationally realistic as Run 8. The systems aren't there like setting cars to loaded or empty, giving them destinations, working hump yard with AI humping, a working dispatcher, couplers breaking from stress, rerailing after you derail, on and on. You can't build your own local train to serve the industries you want to serve. At the same time, it's not as overwhelming as Run 8 is either. TSW2 has AI trains that move around and the scenarios point you where to go, so for players newer to train sims this might be more approachable. The cab interiors and car doors you can open and close are more realistic in TSW2, and the first person walking/running is leaps and bounds better. It's also worth comparing to Railroader (available on Steam) which is very much like TSW2 in that you can walk around anywhere and interact with everything. What Railroader does better is that it has industries that need cars delivered and it's up to you how you do it. It doesn't look nearly as good as TSW2, nor are the train cabs as detailed and realistic as in TSW2. Lastly, there is OpenRails (for MS Train Sim content) which is probably the most realistic in terms of operations and train handling, but it's not as immersive and interactive as either TSW2, Run8 or Railroader. It has hands down the best scenarios and it has 3rd party tools and editors that let you do anything. It lacks the open freedom to walk anywhere and mess with anything that TSW, Run8 and Railroader have, but it feels the most authentic. It also doesn't look half bad, for a train sim. Why am I saying all this? I'm saying this to give you an idea of what's out there, and to say that yes TSW2 fits in with the other sims. If you're a train fan you'll probably want all of them since they each shine in different areas. TSW2 isn't perfect. Yes, the yards are empty, yes the scenarios are dumbed down (but at least there are lots of them), and the railroad feels a bit less realistic and more gamey. It has diddly squat for editing tools. Even so, it does offer something the other sims don't, and that's The Feel. It's immersive and atmospheric. The feeling of walking up to a cold loco in the morning to start it up, with a very detailed startup procedure. You can turn on the heater (or AC if it's hot out) while you wait for air to build up. Then you can drive through the engine facilities to find the other unit to hook up to. Start it up too, before you MU them together.

I really wanted this game for a long time it does have bugs and other issues but I love it. There is the issue of purchasing a lot of DLCs to fully unlock the game but nowadays which game doesn't have DLC. For me this game is just awesome.
