It's just Unreal Tournament. I mean it's EXACTLY Unreal Tournament... And it's great! Because Unreal Tournament is great!

*WARNING: LONGISH AND MEANDERING AND PHILOSOPHICAL BUT HOPEFULLY INTERESTING AND INSTRUCTIVE REVIEW!* So, yeah. There’s probably a long and polysyllabic German word that describes the surpassing satisfaction of getting something you didn’t realize you wanted. This hypothetical word describes the feeling I got after playing just two hours of Toxikk. I know — a mere two hours? Who am I to render an opinion? Nobody, probably. I’m likely a freakishly atypical gamer by Steam standards — and yet, I suspect on some dim level, I’m not as much of an outlier as I think, which is kind of what prompted me to write this review that’s less a review than a messy Rorschach of thoughts. But here’s the kernel I want to get at before I forget: When I was perusing the Steam reviews before making a purchase, I took note of one constant refrain across reviews: "Great game, but no player base! No player base! No player base! No player base! No player base and this game is dead, doomed, terminal!" (*Reviewer collapses dramatically onto Victorian fainting couch*) I only took notice of this complaint because of the frequency of it. I didn’t care about whether there was, is, or could be a strong player base. I just wanted to find out whether Toxikk has 1) decent bots for offline matches and 2) an at least nominally imaginative single-player experience. I was happy to discover that Toxikk has both. I’m all about the bots. (Well, mostly about the bots.) See, I’m an avid and casual but COMPLETELY AWFUL first-person shooter and arena FPS aficionado. I play for the sort of grabby, enthralling, meditative experience of them, for their dubious therapeutic escapism and (so I tell myself) to keep my reflexes, fine motor skills and spatial memory in shape. (I’m 46, obsessed with cognitive health, different story.) Sure, I savor the thrill of competition, but I have no illusions about a second-act career as some demigodlike esports streamer. I’m not, like, philosophically opposed to multiplayer online FPS games or anything — I’ve had great fun leaping into some multiplayer Toxikk matches and even managed not to completely embarrass myself — but generally the players are so outrageously (and admirably! respect!) good that Smearing the Noob gets old for everybody pretty fast. (Note on player base complaint: For what it’s worth, I was playing last night at, like, 1:30 a.m., Vegas time, and found a server with a handful of humans. So, it’s not like a *complete* ghost town.) Now, I don’t profess to know the first thing about the market for PC games, let alone FPS games, let alone FPS arena games, let alone FPS arena games with bots, but I have a sneaking suspicion I’m not the only one who generally favors offline bot matches. Anyway! I play the hell out of some UT2004 botmatches a couple times a week, but was intrigued by Toxikk after I recently got a new gaming rig that was manufactured, like, this century. (I’m intrigued by Quake Champions, too, which I’ll pull the trigger on for sure if/when bots are added — Quake players be scary!) I dropped the 15 bucks straight out and dove right in. I won’t rehash what other reviewers have expressed more vividly, but, yeah: The graphics are posh, the maps beautiful and well-designed, the weapons simple but satisfyingly visceral, the speed and move-style fluid and frantic, and the overall design aesthetic slick and mature. On a more abstract level, Toxikk's total game experience suggests the developers have a real enthusiasm for the genre and a care for the craft. Again, I’ve only played two hours, so, yeah, huge grain of salt, but I guess I feel confident in opining because the game feels like an organic continuation of a Quake 3 or UT2004. And most importantly for me, the bots are convincingly challenging (I play them on “average” — go ahead, laugh) and they sport some basic customizability. (Wish list: sub-sliders for individual bots that could control aggressiveness, general playstyle, accuracy, specific weapon proficiencies and preferences, etc. Hey, I can dream!) So, inasmuch as an idiosyncratic casual gamer who’s only played this game for like a couple hours but found himself so engrossed that he’s writing this review at work and is itching to play again soon carries even a modicum of credibility in this slice of subculture, I definitely recommend this game. As for the chorus that Toxikk’s chronically shaky player base makes it “dead,” that may or may not be true, but it’s moot to me. The fact that, in addition to the game’s other virtues, there’s a solid single-player experience with bots says to me that this game is self-contained, complete, and has high replayability.

A free demo? In 2017?? Speaking as a huge unreal tournament fan, I was a bit skeptical of the game's claim that it is a "spiritual successor to the FPS giants of the late 90's". But 30 seconds into the demo, I was absolutely blown away at how closely the developers replicated the style of unreal tournament. I immediately fell into the familiar groove of running, strafing, jumping and shooting, and the game perfectly captures what made unreal tournament so great: the constant and nagging urge to get one more frag. I saw that it even has a recreation of the famous DM-Deck map, although it wasnt available to play in the demo. Will definitely snag this title once it goes on sale.

I played the original Unreal Tournament while I waited for this to download and it felt like I was just playing a prettier game (with different weapons) going into TOXIKK. The game feels more like the original UT than any of the newer ones. The game looks beautiful, runs great and the AI is top notch sometimes even placing among real players. This game is not your typical shooter, it is what shooters were back in the early 2000's: arenas filled with guns and letting you loose to kill everything. No muss no fuss, this game is fantastic and well worth my $12. I have not had any issues with the multiplayer to this point, I have lost connection a couple of times but I was able to find a new game very quickly. Support these devs and buy this kickass game! 9/10
