Tower Defense roguelikes are limited to a select few on Steam and this one is one of the better ones. However, it does scale rapidly in difficulty almost suddenly and I feel like once you start doing Ascensions, it becomes very RNG reliant, which I guess is the point of a roguelike.
Tower Tactics is a solid tower defense game that seems to pull inspiration from a variety of sources. The exact concoction of similarities is a bit hard to pin down, but the amount of creativity behind the general direction of the game adds quite a bit of breadth to a generally simple title. I've worked my way through five decks so far on base difficulty and, while not an overly difficult or strategic game to play, have enjoyed my time thus far. Each deck has had a definitively unique feel, and I still have many more to try to vary the experience. Like with most modern tower defenses, the core idea of the gameplay loop is to minimize expenditure on the board with long-term economy investment. The framework employs a map similar quite reminiscent of Astrea (not that it is an overly unique concept) where your deck is asked to perform in a variety of different environments. This works well enough, but there is a sense of lopsidedness in how cheap towers perform relative to large ones. Generally speaking, large towers give a significant bonus in investment over a mass of small ones which pushes the player toward very defined economy builds. Rushing bonus mana from the outset is the name of the game in just about every map with any sort of challenge due to the large disparity in tower strength. This results in, for most scenarios, a somewhat frustrating gap in use of a mid-range towers. The most optimal strategy is to have a turn one power dump which can snowball through most early rounds, and the ultimate consequence of this is that the forge node in every map becomes the most powerful node due to the ability in ramp up starting mana and overstrength mechanics. Don't get me wrong, the game is still enjoyable despite this sense of linearity, and I fear it is a problem of the genre more than it is of Tower Tactics itself. Visual clarity on the different towers is not great, but the game can be slowed down or sped up to keep pace with how much feedback the player needs. At around $12 for the base game and both expansions on sale, the value certainly seems present to get a return on investment. Tower Tactics is an overall enjoyable game that seems friendly toward genre vets like myself but also simple enough that new players can pick it up no problem. I'm looking forward to working through the remainder of the content over time and seeing what the higher difficulties have to offer, so that speaks well of its general vibe at 10 hours in.
