It's a six lane rhythm game dedicated to Touhou music. If that description interests you, and you'll be happy just playing Touhou music in Free Play mode (I enjoy this!), then you should buy it. At this point (after a number of patches) I feel the QOL is very high. I like it a lot more than DJMax Respect V, for example. I found the story mode boring and the gimmicks annoying, and the danmaku parts don't work for me. I generally dislike story modes though. It released with a number of issues but they've mostly been fixed now. Moving up difficulties is kind of brutal. Normal -> Hard goes from 4 lanes to 6, and there are some things like splitting the outside lanes that makes the transition a bit smoother, but it's rough. Hard -> Lunatic similarly has a big jump in difficulty because the Lunatic maps often require you to do unfamiliar single-hand patterns on top of being more dense. I solved that with Random but it was a hurdle. The charts are designed for keyboard, and sometimes (mostly in Lunatic) ask you to do lanes 1+3, which is impossible on a controller. I like most of the chart designs, and the rating system is mostly accurate to the difficulty (excepting DLC pack 4 where the ratings seem wildly inaccurate).

I'm fairly conflicted on how to recommend this game as it really depends on what you're expecting out of it. Kagura mode is amazing. The "tap the note at the right time" formula is as simple as it gets in rhythm games, but it's a tried and tested formula that feels great to play. 95% of my 200 hours have been in the free-play Kagura mode as the loop of gradually getting better is very addicting, and the music never gets old. I remember struggling on normal-difficulty maps when I first started playing and now I enjoy clearing even some of the hardest lunatic maps! There are numerous options to customise it to your liking. Increasing the note speed every so often felt like a cheat code to succeeding at harder difficulty maps, just make sure to set it to auto rather than manual. Kagura mode was made slightly easier in the latest update too, with brilliant judgements made more lenient. I can imagine this might have been viewed as controversial by some, but there's an expert mode that reverts it to how it was pre-update if you're looking for that sort of challenge. Danmaku mode on the other hand is this game's attempt at doing something a little more original by combining that classic formula with the shoot-em up style that Touhou is so well known for. I believe however it missed the mark a little. Your attention is divided between the music lanes on either side and the action happening in the middle, and I don't find it very enjoyable trying to grapple with both at the same time. Keep in mind that, as previously mentioned, very few of my 200 hours were put into Danmaku mode, nor do I have any experience with shoot-em ups in the first place, so I'm sure it's possible to get much better and therefore enjoy it more than I have. The story is... ok, nothing ground-breaking, something to use a few hours on before you spend the rest of your time on free-play mode. It's nice to see during the cutscenes familiar characters, or become acquainted with new characters you didn't know of before. You will need to clear a number of stages in each area before moving on, but you're usually given the option of doing it on any of the 4 difficulties. Each stage has some challenges to complete to unlock Mitama cards as well as some gimmicks that shake up the gameplay and that can be countered thanks to these the effects given by the Mitama cards. Unfortunately the gimmicks aren't always the most inspired, either reducing timing windows slightly or obscuring your vision with fog, or... quite literally shaking the gameplay: the earthquake gimmick is possibly the worst part of this game as it's not only not fun in the slightest, but also potentially dangerous for anyone with epilepsy. Thankfully you will always know ahead of time what gimmick will be applied and you can unlock a Mitama card to cancel the effect, but it's disappointing to such a thing would be allowed to be included in the first place. The music though... it's so good. Music taste is obviously subjective, but the advantage of a Touhou-exclusive rhythm game is you know every song is a Touhou one. No need to rely on collaborations with other rhythm games, just to only get the more popular and well known songs. You have songs from sorts of circles, Shinra-Bansho, Akatsuki Records, IOSYS, Tamaonsen, a few marasy piano arrangements, collaborations with Toby Fox and Mystia's Izakaya, etc... I bought the game barely being familiar with Touhou and knowing only the most popular Touhou songs. This game served as a springboard to discovering so many great tunes and music circles from which I can discover even more great tunes. At the time of writing, updates are still coming regularly and new features with more customisation are on their way. DLC 4 is releasing later this month. I do truly hope that won't be the end of it and that they will be considering more DLC packs in the future as it's easy to marvel at the massive music libraries that other rhythm games provide and how 172 songs may not quite be enough for me, but maybe I'm just overly-greedy! In summary, don't bother getting the game if your only interest is Danmaku mode, or seeing what the story has to offer, they are both a bit sub-par on their own. If, however, you're just looking for a classic but well polished rhythm game experience with a great collection of Touhou songs, I'd certainly recommend.

You can practice 6 keys on lower difficulties by turning on "outer random" in the settings before starting a level, for the people that complained about this.

* free-to-play gacha game turned one-time purchase game * supports offline play * developer is actively listening to feedback and addressing problems it's a totally serviceable 4/6-key rhythm game. As a fairly casual player, I'd say it hits all the key notes, and the songlist is great.

Its fun, though has some issues Game has four difficulty modes, Easy Normal Hard and Lunatic. Easy and Normal are exclusively 4K modes, while Hard and Lunatic are 6k. The jump between the difficulties is quite harsh, at least for me who loves 4k but never really played 6k in his spare time. Meaning if you like 4k you will be put to sleep by most songs on Normal, while sweat and fail a lot on Hard. The scoring system itself is very punishing. The judgement is harsh and game really wants you to rack up those combos. The points themselves reflect the rank you obtain at the end of the song, however the ranking doesnt scale with the difficulty. So far i can barely obtain B rank if i full combo a song on normal. The setup (character + card) change how the song is played, but with the judgement being harsh the increased note window is your best bet until you grind more. There is missions on each song, let you unlock more powerful cards for characters (who seem relatively easy to unlock most of the time, not all though). These cards improve their abilities in danmaku mode, or improve your score/make scoring easier/negate some effects of gimmick stages. Danmaku itself is interesting. Its difficult not because of bullet patterns but because you also have to play a rhytm game while dodging bullets. Im not sure how it works yet, but i can relatively easily clear stages. Not saying i can defeat the bosses though, these are bullet sponges you're often meant to grind towards. Overall it seems like a fun game. A decent selection of songs, some questionable choices for DLCs though (some tracks from main series games and fighters are behind DLC, kinda expected them to be in the main game but guessing ZUN doesnt have enough money still). Base game is quite pricey, but it seems to have enough content to justify it. DLCs though, i'd wait for a sale.
