Start with this game before moving on to Warhammer III if you're a new player. This game will eventually function as an over-glorified DLC, but is in a good enough state that you can figure out if you even like the series enough to dump more money on Warhammer III.

This is the best of the three Total War: Warhammer games. The first is good but with limited races and options, and in Warhammer III chaos is grossly overpowered in the mortal realms open world games. By the time you're 200 turns into the game, almost none of the NPC races are still alive because chaos has wiped them all out. That only leaves you with fighting against chaos or being them. And the campaign is terrible. Warhammer II is the best balanced and loads of fun.

Seeing as I've played a bit I think I can say for new players the DLCs are not necessary by any means UNTIL you have a favorite faction. I would recommend trying a play through or two with Each Faction to try and find out what you like. I will always be a big fan of the Karl Franz and Imrik which thankfully are both free. Most DLCs are not necessary but the best DLC is the game Warhammer 1. You unlock the Mortal Empires campaign which is almost necessary to enjoy this game seeing as you get access to 5 new races and an amazing campaign map. Personally I think the Skaven are the best faction by far even if they aren't necessarily my favorite (they have fucking atom bombs) and have the best DLC by far in my opinion being "The Prophet and the Warlock" which adds a lot of what makes them so fun, especially the weapon teams. "Rise of the Tombs Kings" is also a worth while DLC (close 2nd IMO) literally just cause mummies are dope and it adds a bunch of mummy dudes. "Curse of the Vampire Coast" is also a fun DLC with another faction with a unique play style focusing a lot on gunpowder (and shipwreck-mechs???). The Beastmen and Woodelves are also fan favorite factions and are certainly DLCs worth considering. If you are an Achievement hunter you'll also enjoy the fact you can complete most of a factions achievements in a single run if you're diligent and plan a little. So far I've played around 2,000 hours and can honestly say I can't see myself running out of things to do for at least another 2,000, there is simply that many ways to play that many different factions. Warhammer 2 is absolutely still worth the money (I usually wait for a sale regardless) and will continue to be for years to come. I am curious to those of you who have played this game a bit what you all consider to be the best DLCs because I know opinions vary widely in the fan base?

Amazing game. Most of the DLC is worth it to add countless more hours of game-play. Also the mod SFO: Grimhammer II is AMAZING and I cannot play the game without it.

Pretty fun game. You tell yourself that you'll play for about an hour then BOOM you missed work and your gf is sleeping with another man.
