TL;DR: This game, while limited in its scope, was the best start this franchise could hope to ask for. It is well worth it it on its own, but provides great assets for anyone owning the later titles through their combined maps. I highly recommend acquiring this game on sale. I was already a Total War veteran when this game out, but this was my first real foray into Warhammer as an IP, and what an introduction this was. At launch, the game was expansive with possibility, and quite limited compared to how it eventually evolved. As someone who was largely unfamiliar with the franchise, starting more zoomed in and then expanding out was definitely the way to go, and the location and factions that they chose to start with were by far the best for that task. The Empire remains my go to faction to play with. They have a wide roster and really represent that human "protagonist" perspective well. The Vampire Counts are a good foil to The Empire as a growing opposition on their borders. This faction is a very classical evil playthrough with a strong snowballing effect. The Dwarfs are really great at digging in and playing tall, ironically. They are the other "protagonist" sort of faction you start with. They fill that role well, but in a more defensive, isolationist style. They kind of have to be this way given that the final of the four starter factions, The Greenskins, are parked right on their doorsteps. The Greenskins are, of the lot, the ultimate "total war" faction, meaning that they are all about just ripping and tearing through your enemies until it is done. There's a lot of humor and wackiness to be found, but they are certainly a threat that you shouldn't underestimate if you're playing as one of the other factions. These four core factions play off each other well, but form a sort of two main sides to the campaign. All of them inevitably face an "end game" crisis. Whether or not that crisis fully delivers against your faction mostly depends on who you're playing as and how well you and the other factions have been building up in the meantime. While I will say that all of the many DLC/FreeLC factions added over the years enriched the diversity of the core gameplay, very little made this crisis more challenging to face say by the way of being distracted when it starts. Chaos can wreck your game...but it can also get halted off screen by another faction while you're busy doing other stuff. Later titles did a much better job of heightening the threat of Chaos; but, for what it is worth, even with some flaws, I have some very fond memories of both running from and chasing down Chaos hordes. Some of my favorite memories of playing this game are when my back was up against the wall and I was just trying to survive wave after wave. This game is, in my opinion, at its most fun in these sorts of moments. All in all, this was a strong start to the franchise, and remains a crucial component to the Immortal Empires map going forward. The price is high from a DLC perspective, looking to use this content in the later games. As a solo game, it has been surpassed in a lot of ways by other titles; however, there remains plenty that's worthwhile here. That all being said, I can't recommend paying full price. I do recommend this title, but I recommend doing so on sale. It goes on sale fairly often, so if you're just dipping your toes in you shouldn't have too long to wait.

Great game Positive + Strategy game on a massive level + A lot depth, mechanics and ways to play it. + Each faction adds their own unique twist, abilities and monsters Negative - Performance isn't great, game lags, slows down, even though I am way above recommended requirements - Loading takes too much time

solid game play, large map which is shrunk down in later installments for this particular location... every unit and character feels special.

Best way I can explain this game is it's simple. Simple doesn't always mean bad, certainly there are some things that are so basic it's boring (Norsca), but the game is good and can provide hours of enjoyment. I had a fun time 100% this game and it's not a bad starting point if you are dipping your toes into the TW: Warhammer franchise, as you can get accustomed to the new monster units and magic in a relatively safe environment where you can experiment and not be overwhelmed by the different choices of new mechanics of the Warhammer franchise. Factions I'd recommend: Empire, Dwarfs, Greenskins, Vampires, Wood Elves, Chaos Warriors Factions I do not find fun: Bretonnia, Beastmen Factions I'd advise against playing: Norsca A good if sometimes shallow experience, I do recommend

Roughly 30 minutes into playing this game, I had an epiphany... Any potential that I have as an individual is being pissed away by the minute by this shallow escapism. The countless hours studying, working, and struggling are all for naught thanks to my knuckle-dragging impulsivity to boot up Steam once more and rot in a chair instead of: furthering my career, starting my own business, making sound investment decisions, or mastering an instrument. The waste is truly criminal and evidence that no one should have invested a single minute or dime into my future. Now with all that being said... It's a solid RTS with iconic factions, smooth gameplay, and fun maps to battle on. Buy it now and waste your life and potential with me.
