I’m a fan of Rome and the Medieval entries in this series, and I approached this installment with the same enthusiasm—back on an old computer and before the Steam days (that’s why I don’t have hundreds of hours logged in this game—unfortunately). This game has the power to draw you in for dozens upon dozens of sessions. The naval battles are outstanding, and it captures the spirit of the era beautifully. In essence, Creative Assembly took the best from their previous games, polished the graphics, and staged a massive conflict across Europe and its colonies. The game is tougher, with more emphasis on economy and diplomacy. The tech tree takes some getting used to—it initially struck me as a “throwback innovation,” but it's a deep system worth mastering. The level of detail and craftsmanship in the units is superb, and the threat of revolutions adds an exciting layer. There’s a unique thrill in reaching the Ural Mountains and subduing every nation along the way. This is the game where management became as captivating as building up an army and waging wars. It's a fantastic installment, but you’ll need to set aside time during a vacation or a break to truly enjoy it.

Empire sits at the crossroads of the series where player autonomy began to be taken away, while at the same time CA made great additions to the formula in an ambitious and exciting setting. Pros: - The gunpowder line warfare works really well with a Total War (TW) game & allows for a very rewarding sense of racing for knowledge in the enlightenment to gain an economic or military edge over your enemies - You can play across the world with robust trading systems and incentives to play the great naval battles - Unlike most other TW games, the map comes alive through new towns emerging allowing you to build an empire from the ground up in a manner you like. There could be more variety with the building choices here though. - Being able to build and upgrade roads weirdly enough, then see them on the campaign map as they boost population numbers and trade. There is a real feeling of building your empire from the ground up - You can build forts anywhere on the map instead of the unfortunate new "pre assigned spot" system used by CA - Total army movement freedom where each unit can be stationed to guard a specific choke point or travel between armies. This is a very old and fixable ai problem please bring this back with new releases CA! Cons: - Player choice was reduced in the types of buildings you can put in each region. The original Rome TW was iconic partly because you could conquer any part of the map you liked and build it into a commercial or military capital of your empire in the long term & you then got to see each new building by entering an immersive view mode - Playing as Russia is actually extremely rewarding and fun with the region growth mechanics and their hybrid roster - The combat can feel clunky and outdated especially in melee or siege engagements I still enjoy coming back to this game more than playing some of the newest historical releases because of the region growth and army management game design choices. I also find in the era before automatic unit replenishment, it incentivizes you to find the best tactics possible to avoid paying unit replenishment costs. Overall, although Empire is less polished than other TW titles, it is still worth playing. This game really goes to show how well an Empire 2 would do with a modern engine that handles moving from gunpowder to melee more gracefully while still keeping the player freedom that their old core fanbase so dearly miss.

My favorite Total War game ever, some amazing mods for this game, favorite being Darth mod. The biggest drawback to this game and the only reason I choose to play Napoleon over this is the Ottoman glitch during a long campaign. The Ottoman Empire will have so many tiny armies that during its turn it will reposition all of them and cause the game to crash or take literally hours per turn depending on how many turns in you are. You can bypass this by editing the game files real time to destroy Ottoman economy and relaunching, but its cumbersome and defeats the purpose of playing a game at that point. Still recommend, primarily for the single player story campaign. Says I only have 60 hours, but its more like 600 hours counting time played when installed on disc and time played on another account.

One of the best Total Wars in my opinion. This was a really ambitious game and altough it has its problems I think it is a really good Total War game.

Honestly the best strategy game out there. It has the best campaign mode of any Total War, really wish they would make a Medieval 3 that had a similar feel as this game!
