While on modern standards Torchlight is janky it's still a decent experience. This game has such low pc requirements that you can probably play it at 120fps on a Samsung fridge.

Overall I enjoyed this game even tho it's not my favourite type (normally I prefer turn-based / strategy) - for me this is one of the few games that I have enjoyed in a similar way to one of the early Diablo games. Pros I generally thought the look and feel is quite nice - I generally enjoyed my playing time I didn't find anything really frustrating / difficult about the mechanics and it's easy enough with the town portal to replenish supplies etc, so mostly I was able to just focus on enjoying the game There are some good options in terms of upgrading existing equipment e.g. enchanting, adding gems / ember, and choosing how to upgrade your character, without being overly complicated. It's very satisfying when you find a unique / extremely powerful item. I think it's a nice touch to be able to share items across your characters, if you want to. I think the options to equip spells on your pet and change its stance are nice. I didn't really bother that much with some of the pet stuff but I was pleasantly surprised when I found I could equip a healing spell on it. On the normal mode it is not too challenging - suitable for new players - which for me as a casual player was good as I didn't get too frustrated / stuck at any point. Cons: There is no real intelligence in the enemies, they pretty much attack you if they see you (and sometimes if you back off I think they kinda forget about you) I'm not sure that all the spells / powers are equally useful, I think for me I landed up relying heavily on one offensive spell which seemed a lot more effective than the others There are a lot of items and particularly towards the end I landed up with an absolute ton of items all of which are pretty good (particularly if you are building up your ember supplies) so you need frequent visits to town to sell inventory and ultimately I had to spend a fair amount of time on this and chuck items I kinda wanted to keep. Maybe would have preferred if you could earn inventory size upgrades or something. The final boss battle is way tougher than the other bosses - for me I got tired of pressing the mouse buttons on this last bit - and at one point towards the end got trapped as my mouse briefly seemed to stop responding - I didn't really enjoy this final showdown. Neutral: The story is OK but is not really very in depth. The replayability - I could probably see myself trying it again in a few months or a year or two with a different character but I'm not rushing to play it again immediately.

Torchlight is a charming game with some unique features that make it stand out. The fishing and pet system is a fun twist, and the skill trees are well-designed, making progression enjoyable with good build variety. There's decent replay value in the endgame with the endless dungeon and the maps. The character retirement system also adds an interesting dynamic, though I wish it had a bit more depth. On the downside, the game shows its age with clunky hitboxes (especially on stairs) and an outdated UI. The Dark Zealots can be frustratingly overpowered, and the lack of a respec option without mods is a big oversight. The final boss is weirdly balanced to the point of requiring a lot of grinding to defeat on higher difficulties, and higher difficulties reduce loot drops rather than improve them, giving no real incentive to play them outside of achievement hunting. Despite these issues, Torchlight's unique charm makes it worth playing if you're an ARPG fan. Overall Score: 6.5/ 10

This is a neutral review. Torchlight is a classic of the Hack and Slash RPG genre. I didn't play it before, but I heard a lot about it. Well, it's a little dated, in terms of graphics and in terms of story paradigm (which is the basic - "the town is under threat by the dungeons full of monsters below it!"). It's very entertaining and addictive. But only to people like me who are fans of this type of games. Gamers who are not into hack and slash RPGs will definetely find Torchlight very repetitive. It's basically one dungeon after the other, until the 35th floor where the final boss awaits you. You can even play after the final boss for an infinite amount of subsequent floors. The dungeons are always randomly created, every subsequent floor is larger then the previous one. There are only 3 classes - fighter, rogue and wizard. The variety of weapons and skills is ok, but I have seen better skill trees. It's better to max level just a few skill instead of wasting the skill points on too many skills. The thing I didn't like is that you really have to know which skills are best if you want to have an easier time in this game. So you need to research your class before starting to play. I found the game too easy on Normal, and on Hard it's challenging only in the last levels and final boss. But maybe I had luck with the random loot drops. The enemy variety is also just ok (not great), and the poor graphics doesn't let you distinguish them enough. Make no mistake, this was a very good game at the time of production, even in 2024 I had fun with it, but it clearly didn't age very well. A good example why it didn't age well is the quest paradigm that consist of the same 3 type of quests that recycle all the time. Also there are no extra events or locations that would break the dungeon/leveling up monotony.

Love the cartoon graphics of the game. Quests and battles are evenly spaced and not so difficult as a lot of other games. Great starter game for noobs!
