This game learned from Lockdown and abandoned all pretense at being some kind of slow, serious military sim. And it’s all better for it. It’s a slick, vaguely tactical action-movie game now, and I’m mostly had a blast playing it. When the levels are good, when they are those open-ended arenas with multiple entry points and floors - killing terrorist by the hundreds feels amazing. And quite challenging too, I just sleepwalked through Lockdown and this game forced me to wake up and pay attention. It’s still alright even when it is straight-up just corridors. The problems start with those defend the hacker, you just alerted the horde sections, Those nosedive the game into being the lamest, most irritating game of Whack-a-mole in existence. Thank god there is not so many of them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McNM-7V8jhQ&ab_channel=Silent_fog Oh, and checkpoints are just psychotic. Get ready to repeat ten minutes of nothing before arriving at the actually challenging part over and over and over again. And they are placed BEFORE every dialogue ever, so I hope you are into listening the same thing 20 times. And the ending is straight up is not there, so you better buy Vegas 2

Rainbow Six Vegas was a more action oriented entry in the series to try and reach a wider audience. Almost 20 years later, OG Vegas can still be a good time if a little outdated. It is a unique first person/third person shooter hybrid where when traversing the environment you will be in a first person perspective like other FPS games but will switch to a third person perspective while in cover like Gears of War. Personally I think it is a really neat idea but can be easily exploited by quick scoping in cover with a sniper rifle. Like other tactical games, the time to kill is extremely short, if you play dumb or run out in the open you will die very fast, using your AI team mates effectively is key to surviving. Ubisoft has taken down the multiplayer and coop servers for this title so it is now purely a single player experience. The single player story I found to be nonsensical and kind of hard to follow, really you should only play if the gameplay loop interests you. You can tell that this game was made for a console experience with how the buttons are laid out and unfortunately the Ubisoft overlords have refused to update the game to allow modern console controller support so it is mouse and keyboard only which can be annoying. Since the game heavily relies on cover, you have to hold the right button on your mouse a lot which can get fatiguing if you want to just run through the campaign quick. The character models still hold up after almost 18 years but you can tell the game was made for 30 FPS because at uncapped the heads of the characters vibrate like bobble heads which is both hilarious and annoying when in cover. Vegas from the air looks kinda cool but also incredible low texture. The guns themselves are also low poly count so aiming down sights or using optics can be tricky or bad sometimes just because the textures are bad. Overall it is a fun game that is worth trying if you want to see an accessible version of what Rainbow Six was like before it became a toxic twitch based games as service title.

This game is a diamond in the rough! Amazing game! After you get out of Mexico the graphics are awesome! The combat is very well done for a title of it's time. The friendly AI is pretty good although you will occasionally have to do a little bit of babysitting to keep them alive... but don't under-utilize them either or you'll get surrounded and killed pretty quickly sometimes. The sound effects are superb. The fact that you can shatter glass everywhere is satisfying... and once you start shooting the muzzle flash and climb create a whole new fog of war element that feels very realistic. But I DO mean rough, in that it has one major drawback. No save game option, and the checkpoints can be INFURIATINGLY far apart. You spend 10 minutes approaching a bottleneck only to get killed by that ONE guy you didn't see and have to start over. I mean... I paid money for this game and it should be designed such that if I CHOOSE not to have to repeat all that time I should be able to save whenever I can, or at least have more checkpoints. Aside from this RS:V is definitely on par with FAR CRY or FEAR or any other shooter of it's time as a great first person experience even for 2024!

For those who don't have much patience or time to play those extremely slow and complex tactical shooters and simply want a simplified and straight-to-the-point experience, with a methodical pace, realistic setting and sharp combat, this game is a gem. Rainbow Six Vegas may well have been the franchise's downfall as a single-player game, but it still maintains impressive technical competence, solid gameplay AND runs well on modern systems. Everything is brown and gray, but i'm cool with that.
