Difficulty : 3/5 (Rather Hard) Global : 3.5/5 (Very Good) Curator page : [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44695991-Anokturnus/]Anokturnus Toki Tori 2 is an unusual puzzle-platformer with metroidvania-like progression. When you think about "platformer", the first thing that comes to mind is "jump"... but you can't jump in Toki Tori 2. Besides moving, you can whistle and stomp, that's all. The game is all about manipulating the animals and your environment to progress. Depending on what receives the signal and how, this can do interesting and varied things. For example, if a frog eats a berry bug, it will stop and inflate. If you stomp near it, it will release a flying bubble which you can get into. These manipulations render the game rather slow and precise. You'll also often need to reset if you make a mistake, though this is usually not a big problem as checkpoints are really common. The beginning of the game is rather linear; you're asked to go to the village, so you just follow the path while solving easy puzzles. There are also wing medals scattered around the world, so you collect them. What's strange though is that you'll notice impossible paths that seem to lead somewhere or medals that are completely inaccessible. It wouldn't be strange if you'd get upgrades or new moves, but there are none. You have all the tools you need right from the beginning, and the game clearly states it several times. It turns out that Toki Tori 2 is a metroidvania with areas locked behind knowledge, not upgrades. Nothing is told of course, you'll need to deduce and memorize everything on your own. The more you learn about what you can do with your whistle and stomp abilities, the easier it becomes to find secret routes and hard-to-reach places. The puzzles also become harder of course, only the beginning is easy. The map is great to deduce where you need to return to find secret routes, and you'll also be able to deduce a way to teleport. The wing medals are another story unfortunately. It's very, very annoying to backtrack for them, and that's a shame because the hardest challenges come from some of them. Overall, Toki Tori 2 is a very good game that brings its unique twist to the metroidvania formula. Metroidvania + puzzles is my weak point so this game might be rated slightly too high but whatever. Recommended.

Toki Tori 2+ is a fantastic game. It's a game in the style of Leap Year or Animal Well, where knowledge is the true key to complete the game instead of power-ups in a Metroid-vania. One of the older additions to the genre, and one of the best as well. The way you discover some things are not as clever, like just a bird teaching you a note that does something, though it makes sense for a first play-through. Explaining the good stuff is essentially a spoiler, so I won't go into too much detail. I'll just say that certain background elements are more involved with the game-play than you first realize. I actually was playing this game on my Switch, but I got soft-locked, or at least I thought so; I somehow never noticed the reset level option, somehow. The option is much more noticeable on the PC version, though the Switch version is cleaner. It is something that you will use often besides the after-checkpoint reset the game offers, since you can screw up at various points. Despite me already playing this game before and really understanding it, I still played for 8 hours before completing it, and didn't really go for any extras. I did sidetrack at the beginning with my knowledge, and that gave me a good ending, which is pretty funny. Definitely worth the price. 10/10.

I've seen this game hundreds of times before but always assumed it was some silly kids game so never looked at it. Decided to give it a try after hearing it was actually a competent puzzle game, and I'm surprised to say that it's great. The music and art are both fantastic, the vibe is great. However, the main draw is the simplistic complexity, if that makes sense. You have two abilities and you get them both as soon as the game starts. You never unlock anything and you could technically beat the game immediately if you knew what to do, but you don't. It's an "infovania", where you'll constantly be learning more about how the world works, turning your understanding upside down. It definitely does get frustrating at some points as some of the puzzles are just ridiculously hard, so I've only been playing it in short bursts of about 30 minutes. Definitely worth it on sale, and don't expect to rush through it

(spoiler‐free review) #20 on my “Top 25 Inspiring Games” list. A prime example of sublime game design, and one of my favourite puzzle games. Some of my elevator pitch lines include: [*] Toki Tori 2+ is the best example of a “knowledge‐keyed” exploration game in the industry. [*] Toki Tori 2+ is my favourite puzzle platformer on the Wii U and Switch where you can’t jump (consoles which also have Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker ). [*] Toki Tori 2+ is the only game suitable for young kids I’ve seen which is also just a well‐designed video game suitable for all ages. I would say this is more like a puzzle game than a “Metroidvania” game, but both labels definitely apply. This game is best enjoyed fully blind and with no prior knowledge of it at all. This game can get very difficult despite its cutesy appearance (particularly for 100% completion), and it’s fairly unique in how you have to approach it, so if you’re having trouble, here are some general tips: [*]Be observant. Like, really, pay attention. [*]If you’re stuck on a puzzle, come back to it later; there’s almost certainly another part of the map you can explore instead. [*]The golden collectibles are only needed for 100% completion, so don’t fret about getting them all unless you want that. [*]Experiment often. Yes, this game’s aesthetic makes it feel like an early WiiWare or iPhone game, but this does not mean it is shovelware like many titles of that era. It’s quite charming to see in motion, there’s a lot of care put into creature and environment design, and several setpieces in this game are genuinely beautiful. The music is also really good. It’s fairly ambient, but there are some catchy songs at parts too, and the music switches between parts as you move through an area to keep things interesting. The VFX also do an excellent job at conveying mechanical information. Really, no part of this game falls flat. Well, except for the “writing”: I first played this game on my Wii U, which I think remains the definitive version because it sticks to its guns on the “no text at all” ethos. This Steam version (and I believe the Switch version as well) adds “telepathic messages” throughout at certain points (particularly in the early game and after specific accomplishments), which cover the top of the screen and never contribute anything meaningful. Rest assured that this text is never important, for those of you who can’t read English (which, you can’t read this review either, but whatever). I do wish there was an option to disable these. Be aware that there is no native control rebinding whatsoever. However, the game’s controls are so exceedingly simple (2 action buttons (with redundant binds), 1 menu button, 1 movement control (stick / d‐pad / arrow keys), one optional stick / mouse for camera) that this shouldn’t pose a problem in almost all cases. The game is locked to 60 FPS display modes (with an optional low‐performance 30 FPS mode toggle). The level editor entry in the “tools” section of the Steam library which this adds does not launch anymore for some reason, but it still works when launching the game executable with the “--editor” option.
