I grew up playing a game series on PlayStation called Vandal Hearts. I loved the series and it introduced my love for grid-based tactical RPG games. Those Who Live is excellent, with a very good story, characters, and design. I found it a bit tricky at first, although once I got settled in, I went from Chapter 9 to restarting so I could put into practice what I had learnt about the game. The fact that characters can die and this affects you in the grand scheme of things just challenges you further to make the right decisions. The game is quickly becoming one of my favourites of all time, and prior to Vandal Hearts and recently Fell Seal, I thought this type of game was a thing of the past. Those Who Rule is a fantastic game and for a solo dev's hard work - it pays off! I am already dreaming of future sequels.

This is a sublime gem of a turn-based squad game from a solo developer who ought to be supported - nay, nourished and cherished - by all fans of turn-based squad games. The game has a gripping plot, and the turn-based combat - the core of all games of this stripe - is intuitive and yet complex. As an inveterate min-maxing, power-gaming freak, I found myself re-starting the entire game three times already to try out different characters and class combinations. And boy, is there an endless variety of possibilities there! But above all, this review is all about the virtues of the developer. He is ostensibly a solo developer, but he must have a legion of clones surreptitiously working on his behalf, because he is ceaselessly improving the game and turning out new patches almost daily. But a mere work ethic does not make the best indie developer I have ever encountered. The man is a tireless, master communicator, and he does it with such civility. I have never remotely run across a dev who is as open-minded, responsive, and above all, nice. Just buy it - and buy everything else the dev produces in the future.

As a longtime fire emblem fan, all I have to say about this game is that it is great, at times bordering on amazing, especially for the small development team. It deserves to be recognised among the best SRPG games imho. The good: -Tactical combat is both accessbible and much deeper than fire emblem, requiring constant smart use of units and their positioning and active abilities and cooldowns, which they get from both their classes and equippable items. -Amazing class variety, each unit can upgrade their class twice with 3 choices each time. While there is a shared pool of classes between characters, each individual class is genuinely powerful and made me excited to use it. -On hard/veteran difficulty, it is a genuine challenge and very difficult to complete optimally, with all side objectives met. The difficulty curve itself is good, punishing for mistakes but also very rewarding of tactical play. -The campain has a lot of choices you can make which influence what rewards and characters you get for your actions. -The campaign is lengthy, taking me about 40 hours to finish on hard difficulty. -The overall writing and characterization of characters is great for the genre. Especially in the second half, there is real tension and made me want to keep seeing 'what happens next'. Most characters feel more like real, layered persons than most fire emblem quirky characters. There are no anime tropes but rather realistic midieval ones. -The music is great and has some amazing themes like the main menu theme. -The visuals are good enough for in indy game. The character art itself is the highlight. -The developers are very active and approachable/friendly in fixing the post-release bugs, of which there aren't many. -Imho, the overall quality for the price is great. The bad: -My main gripe with the current release is that the last quarter of the game felt rushed and stale gameplay-wise to me, not living up to the first 75%. It relies purely on the tension of the main narrative by that point and on large-scale battles. However, there seem to be no more side objectives or collectable rewards like there are in earlier chapters. Also the support conversations drastically reduce in number, as well as that there are no more real changes in how to outfit your units past the 70% point. -There are some balance issues between classes with some clearly being better than others, but there is no way to respec your characters into different classes. -Ther are mostly minor post-release bugs, which are being worked on. -Being unable to restart the chapter instantly from inside the chapter is a bit clunky. There for some reason is nu 'reset' button, instead you have to go back to the main menu first to restart the chapter, then sit through the pre-battle story again (though it is skippable). -There is no voice acting outside the narrator. Which I can understand for the small budget, but similar small budget games like Sympohy of War at least had a few in-battle lines for each character which added a lot of extra personality and immersion. Overall rating: 8,8/10 (amazing for the price, teamsize and genre). If the last quarter of the game had the quality of the first three, it would be a 9,5/10 for me. If the bugs were resolved and some element of voice acting was added, it would be a 10/10.

Support this game if you are turn-based combat fan. The game is a lot of fun, very indie but still well made. Some bugs here and there, but the developer is amazing and has already fixed a ton of things found by us customers. And the developer is super responsive in the Steam forums. We suggest stuff, find bugs, and he fixes them same day or next day. He has implemented so many suggestions that we've asked about. He is one of the great ones! Support this developer. Enjoy the game, too. It's a good one, with lots of well done game systems and some fairly unique combat techniques, too. Oh, and it has zone of control! Which lots of turn-based combat games recently forget to include.

If you're into Fire Emblem, this is right up your alley. Feels a lot like FE9/10 in terms of style, but the combat has a good bit more depth. Positioning is important as every melee unit has a "zone of control" that slows movement past enemy units. Every weapon type has some kind of ability instead of a straight advantage over another weapon type in a "rock paper scissors" kind of way. Inventory management is key as well. Story is very grounded so far and doesn't take up too much of your time. Characters have individual personalities and motivations, which is refreshing. Some slight grammar issues, but nothing major. About what you can expect from a solo dev. Overall, I'm about 4 hours in and really enjoying it! I'll update my review when I'm done. Give the demo a shot if you like tactical RPGs. It'll show you a lot of what to expect with the main game. Do note that a lot of QoL features were added to the main game that are not in the demo.
