This is a masterpiece. Despite leaving a negative review for the first game because of how much of a drag the gameplay was, I am glad I gave this one a shot. The gameplay doesn't consist of sitting around and waiting anymore, the entire thing is more concise and diverse at the same time, which made for a very pleasant journey. The storytelling remains as good as it was in the previous installement, and continues the story of Jack Boyd.

I really loved this game! Personally I found it to be a very improvement in almost all aspects compared to the prequel. I loved the intro, loved the story, loved the cutscenes, loved the gameplay and loved the music! I think the length of the game is perfect, the prequel was amazing, but it felt too long and it killed any sort of short-term replayability. Looking at the negative reviews, I actually ended up liking most of the things people reviewed as a negative. I really liked the micromanagement aspect and the tactical assaults and combats. I liked the loyalty system and how once loyal, some cops will stop complaining about working two days in a row or being sent on a job with someone they dislike. There are only two things that I wish were different: the difficulty and the number of tactical missions. For the difficulty, I felt that overall the game was quite simple, taking out one gang and selling some drugs and gold bars means you'll be fine financially without much struggle. And once I paid to have the food system be automatical again I never had any cop being disloyal. Once your cops have some stats maxed you'll be fine with 98% of the calls, almost always if you have max stealth and choose "sneak behind the suspect", or if you have max negotiation and pick "calm the suspect down" you'll succeed. Towards the end of the game I started sending full maxed cops and picking a random option without even reading what was happening and I was still solving all calls without any cop or civilian hurt or killed. The final assault of the game also felt quite simple, the last waves were basically just copy paste of the previous wave and you can easily spawn kill all of the enemies. I also almost never felt a struggle with the number of cops and equipment, I think the "shop" should have been more expensive. For my other complain, I would have loved having more tactical missions like the circus assault and the ambush. It would have been amazing if some normal calls would actually ended up being some sort of ambush, with not only enemies coming at you, but also traps placed around. It'd also been fun if you could send some reinforcements after an ambush, and having them appear after a couple of turns. But aside from these two points, I really liked everything else and I really recommend this game.

Firstly, I think people really overlook the soundtrack of this game. I played it a while ago and I still like to put the soundtrack on as background noise. It really is great. Second, I hear a lot of complaining about the story and I just didn't think it was that bad. There were moments that I didn't like the protagonist and that's ok. I think the way it's written is supposed to make you dislike Jack at times. I like that about it. Finally, the game play is ok. A little difficult at times if you're trying to take out all suspects in a raid without killing any of them but I think that is good because it leaves you with a choice that can be difficult to make. Take them alive or prioritize the safety of your officers. Besides I like a challenge. I know this review isn't easy to read but I rarely make reviews. Sorry about the formatting.

Really appreciated the Northern Gothic/Noir police story vibes. The setting is great, a town spiritually somewhere between Fargo and Belarus that gives a sort of Alaskan vibe with eldritch horror lurking just out of sight akin to True Detective. Somehow they also managed to craft an better soundtrack than the first game, even when a song jumps a few genres it lands perfectly for the vibe. They really dialed in the game mechanics and the deputies under you feel even more like living characters with different personalities and watching them gain skill or pull themselves together when they become loyal to you is a really rewarding experience. The gameplay also follows the investigation style of a Sheriff's Department more than a typical big city detective which was a cool shift. The crime is both representative of a small town but also escalates to the point of what daily security and counter terror work must feel like in a town Northeast Syria. The contraband system and favor cultivating is great in this game too, really reminiscent of '90s police tactics like offering kids a boom box for info. Oh and one big difference between this and the first game is they added turn based combat to special tactical missions which I really enjoyed. The Police being limited to service revolvers and their special skills really made it click for me, it's a little bare-bones to some extent, but its still fun and they seemed to have done more to it in Rebel Cops. The story is more fleshed out in this one than in the first one and I almost feel it does more justice to the plot of the first game in the dialogue than the first game did, but I don't want to be harsh.

This Is The Police 2 is an interesting sequel. As good as I think it is, I echo a lot of the same grievances other fans have. It has some significant rough edges that really do hold it back, and result in making this game just as frustrating as it is fun. As for why, let's break it down. Eight months after the events of the first game, Jack Boyd is on the run from the law, and is holed up in a backwater town called Sharpwood trying not to get got by the feds. Unfortunately for him, he had a run-in with the local police department and is at risk of being handed over to the federal government by the police chief, Lilly Reed. However, after convincing Reed to let him lend his experience as an officer to help her struggling department, Jack Boyd adopts the persona of Warren Nash, an undercover cop who was sent to help Sharpwood with their rampant gang activity. Meanwhile, back in Freeburg, the chase for Jack is still on, and they're getting closer and closer with each passing day. The set-up this time around is a lot more tense, but it is also admittedly contrived. The uneasy alliance between Jack and Lilly takes a good amount of suspension of disbelief, and the idea that she'd be the only one in her whole department to recognize Jack Boyd when none of the other officers do is asking a lot on behalf of the player. It does lend to a more tense atmosphere, however. Unlike the first game, where Jack could fall back on City Hall or the local mafia for protection, he instead has to scrape by on whatever he can, and the threat of getting caught and giving up the ghost is ever-present. The writing also takes on a slightly different style than the first game. The best way to describe it would probably be Fargo meets Tarantino, and not just because of the snowy northern setting, but also because of the odd character interactions. It's all part of building up a very specific tone, and while I found it compelling, your mileage may very. Gameplay has changed considerably between titles, and this is where the game is either made or broken for you. Answering 911 calls and sending police officers to the scene of the crime are still the same, but now each crime has a minimum star ranking that must be met before the call can be answered at all. So let's say you have five officers, each one has about 200 star ranking, but the call has a threshold of 1100. Then the call cannot be answered and you simply have to let the clock tick away. And this is on top of having to answer multiple calls at a time. Now, it isn't quite as bad as I may make it sound, and there are false alarms for you to consider as well, but you will likely run into a scenario where you're just shy of answering a call more than once. This wouldn't be such a bad thing if it wasn't for one nasty trick the game pulls later: beer tabs. At the end of every in-game day, you collect a number of beer tabs based on how well your performance was. You can then spend them to get equipment or even new officers. There's a catch, though: you lose beer tabs for every mistake made as well, and can potentially lose more than you earned. Do this three days in a row, and it's game over for you. This makes answering calls a lot more stressful than in the previous game, since you also have to contend with officers being injured or killed, and if they had a really good star ranking, you could very well be shit out of luck. Then there are the game's biggest addition: tactical missions. This are turn-based, grid-based strategy segments where you move officers behind cover and deal with suspects accordingly. You can choose to arrest or kill them, but these have different effects. Killing a suspect makes their bodies disappear after a turn, meaning they can't be detected by other suspects. Arresting them, however, will make it more likely that they will be spotted, leaving your officers to have to fend off the rest. Sounds pretty good in concept, and it is, it's actually a lot of fun... BUT... This game does a terrible job of conveying information to you. Enemies disappearing after being killed is something I had to figure out on my own, even though it would have been very helpful for a particularly notorious stealth mission late in the game. The game has a very trial-by-fire mindset, where it just sort of throws you into the deep end. Some guidance is given, but not enough to make you feel like you know what you're doing. And this is without mentioning officer loyalty. It isn't just star rankings you have to consider, but also whether or not they are loyal to you. Disloyal officers will fight back on being given orders more often, and in tactical missions, they are controlled entirely by the AI, leaving their turns up to chance. Except loyalty is finicky as fuck, since the difference between "loyal" and "disloyal" could be something as stupid as "letting your officer go home so they can catch up on their favorite book." Because it's not like I could use every single officer I can to make sure I don't get a game over. Then there's making sure you gain enough cash each week to make sure you can send hush money to someone who threatens to out you to the feds, on top of the beer tab mechanic I mentioned previously. All of this combined makes it seem like the game is actively fighting you, and yes, it does really come across that way at times. It isn't that this game is always like this, but when it is, whatever fun you were having will likely be drained. This Is The Police 2 is a much less even experience than the first, and as much as I ended up liking it in the end, it comes with a massive asterisk.
