I love witchy games and this is one of my all time favorites! This game has my two favorite things: wandering around a pretty world and collecting things. So if that's what you enjoy, I definitely recommend this game! That being said, there are some things that could use improvement in the game. It is very hard to know where you are supposed to go and what to do, though they are at least adding in quest area highlights in a new update. Still, it is frustrating to get a quest and spend hours upon hours trying to find the items only to realize the items needed won't be available for three more seasons and now you've wasted countless in game days trying to complete one quest and ended up missing the window to complete other ones. In my first game I spend the first two months trying to get my broom only to realize it would be impossible until nearly the end of the year, and then I ended up missing out on another quest that required plants that only grew in the first two months (I was also searching for them, but since I didn't have even a vague location, I wasn't able to find them in time). Half of those issues will be solved in the new update, but it would be nice if the game let you know approximate timelines for some of the bigger quests. I still have no idea what happens if you make it to the end of the year and you haven't accomplished the tasks for your witch test: do you fail if you don't get above a certain grade? They don't give any timelines, so I have no idea if I should be actively trying to accomplish as much as I can in a day, or if I have the freedom to just roam and collect. Also, I wish there was a way to see the names of the items needed for recipes and not just pictures. A lot of the plants look similar, and you have absolutely no information on them unless you have already collected them which is a bit annoying. Hopefully in the update you can make a specific plant a quest and it will give you at least a hint of where/when to find it. Even a little 'this item cannot be located at this time' message would helpful! Overall, I still really like this game and would love to see more witchy games like it!

So, I'm still in my first year of the game but I thought I'd write a review. I. Love. This. Game. Seriously, it's adorable, there's enough to keep my little ADHD brain busy collecting, and there is a lot to explore. The game is not without its problems, but I'm willing to look past most of them to really enjoy it. Yes, i've had a bit of lag but nothing game breaking. Yes, it takes my game a bit longer to render everything at the start of a new day, but it does actually get it done. I know there are a lot of people having a problem with that at the moment but not all of us. Yes, I wish the inventory system was much bigger. I collect all the things and it's an issue. I like the NPC's though, I love the environments, I love the variety, and I just enjoy a lot about this game. The seasons are a bit quick for me, but most crops have two seasons back to back at least, and that's great. I think my biggest complaint is honestly not even pertaining to the game at all, so much as the wiki, which feels unhelpful. And that is, I think, due to the early access. I really feel like doing early access is making it hard for these smaller games to keep the excitement going. I waited on this one for full release, and it seems a lot of fanbase has moved on now and the wiki has suffered for it. Short of the graphics issues for new people (which I hope the devs are looking in to?) I highly recommend this game. And Devs, I'd love to see more communication about the future of the game. Will more be added, what is the roadmap looking like, etc. 9/10, would absolutely buy again.

I really have enjoyed the game unfortunately more in game explanations are needed. I had to stop and search for everything on the wiki. Like how the hell am i supposed to find a very specific mushroom if you don't give me some idea where. Sure, i mean i could run around all day except the days are too short. Not to mention everything is so expensive and earning money when things are so difficult to find is very stressful after a while. and the only other way to make money is the stand in front of the mansion but that is a daily bonus that offers very little. I love the game but ugh its so annoying. im honestly maybe more conflicted than anything. ill keep playing but its annoying.

An absolute joy of a cozy game! I have played since the first week of early access release and I must say that Fern Island has come a very long way from where it was. It's not as clunky as other reviews have stated and it's honestly not that complicated. The recipes aren't overly expensive, farming for upgraded crops is a bit of a challenge (as it should be), there are tons of puzzles, MANY different items/bugs/fish to collect, decorations are cute and easy to come by, quests aren't overly drawn-out and super demanding, and seeing the development of your home is super rewarding. HOWEVER, the story could use more detail, BUT I'm sure more will be added with time. The Discord community worked hand-in-hand with the devs to work out the kinks, bugs, glitches, typos, and even the community-created wiki. The devs have taken all feedback extremely well, remained active in chat, and even added a few QOL things that were suggested, which is great! This game will probably always be one of my favorites.

This review is in no way a discouragement from buying and playing this game. This is intended for the developers to address some of the common issues that I have experienced in the game during my 52+ Hours of game play and to potentially implement some QOL fixes that i have observed. 1. The current seasonal life cycle. I understand the developers intentions in creating this system and it is a fantastic, However it is beyond frustrating when i need to get a flower. mushroom, or herb for a main or side quest only to realize that it was only in season in the previous season to what i am currently in when picking up the quest. I then have to wait for several play sessions to even be able to get said item, I feel like in this Scenario a "Ritual of Seasonal Change" is not out of reason and would not break the immersion factor while also respecting the players real world time investment. 2. Lack of a more comprehensive tutorial. I sincerely hope that the tutorial in its current form is not what will be in full release. It currently lacks detail on what your supposed to do in the starting days of the game and if not for the Wiki @https://witchoffernisland.wiki.gg/wiki/The_Witch_of_Fern_Island, I would have been lost for far longer than i was. There needs to be a tutorial system in place that is far more detailed than current. 3. Bees. Because i hate the bees. (that is all, just me complaining about the random bee attacks) 4. Flying, Once you are able to progress far enough to where you can craft your broom it gets much easier traversing the world, however some improvements need made to the world when viewed from the Air as there is a lot of asset pop ins that occur and being able to see through the map when viewing long distances. (Note: I understand that this game is in Alpha and understand that this will be addressed, just voicing my opinion on what i have seen) 5. The creation of a in game shop, I understand that the Witches stall serves this function however I feel like if they added a feature that the NPC's were able to take unwanted items it would be greatly helpful, Especially in the early stages of the game when you're struggling for currency, Even if they limit the amount of coins this NPC can have Daily and even do a value depletion vs. selling the item at your witches stall (This could be implemented in the form of a tax that is paid to the NPC for selling your goods). This is a wonderfully cute game and i have greatly enjoyed my play through thus far. Below are bugs that i have found during my play through Bug 1 : During the Breaking the Curse story line, after you perform the ritual on the cursed doll and wait 1 day after you are to return to Patrice however she never allows you to turn the quest in and it simply hangs never completing. Bug 2 : During the I believe i can Fly story line, after crafting the Broom potion and actually crafting the Broom the progress of my quest has reset and is asking for me to craft the Broom potion again. This is particularly frustrating as i have already done it once and have the flying broom. Bug 3: Siemibor random pop ins and outs, There has been a number of instances where i have been directly in front of this NPC for him to just randomly disappear of the face of the map. Frontally this is the only NPC that i have observed this with, however there have been situations where i have been foraging, Fishing or otherwise just exploring and will randomly be teleported to the hospital with no damage, No day reset, Just Poof and I am in the hospital. Again this is a wonderful game and I hope that the developers are able to continue with it and bring it to Full release, To many games have been abandoned or linger in the alpha stages for to long before outright dying, I hope this will not be one of them.
